No Swearing

Today, I want to start with a question?
Do you think that your name is important? Why?
Do know that before you were even born, your parents were thinking of a name. Your name might have been an original, or maybe you’re named after somebody important to your parents.
My name is David Charles. I was named after my uncle and my Grandpa.
Most names have a meaning. Here’s an example: Daniel means “servant of the living God.”
How do you like it when people make fun of you or call you bad names?
I used to say, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.”
You know, I wasn’t telling the truth. Some of those names really did hurt me.
Nobody likes to be called names or have anybody make fun of our names.
Your name is special to you because it’s who you are. I want you to know that you are special to God.
Just like our names are important to us, God’s name is important to Him.
How do you think that God feels when people use His name in a wrong way?
The third commandment that God gave to Moses is
Exodus 20:7 NIV
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Often people around us use God’s name in a way that is not right. This is called swearing.
God’s name is holy. His name is to be respected and honoured.
Maybe you haven’t heard people misuse God’s name, but as you get older, you will.
Sometimes they use it to make a point. Other times, just because it’s become a habit.
It’s a bad habit to get into, and bad habits are hard to break.
If we hang around people that have bad habits, we can become like them.
1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
It’s not cool to hang out with people that swear, because we become like them.
I used to ride on a school bus for 13 years. Some of the kids had really bad mouths. It would have been easy to become like them.
We need to be careful of what we say. Your words have power of life and death. Sometimes we don’t even realize it, but we are bringing either life or death to people.
Maybe you’ve heard of mental health struggles that some people have. Let’s use our words to encourage people, not to bring them down.
Do you remember the 1st commandment?
You shall have no other gods before Me.
What about what Jesus said in Matthew 22:37?
Matthew 22:37 NIV
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
What’s in our hearts come out of our mouths. If we love God with all of our hearts, praise and worship will come out of our mouths.
Proverbs 4:23 NLT
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
We don’t have to misuse God’s name, how do you think that we can use God’s name in a good way?
By singing songs to Him, Telling others about how much God loves them, by praying, and thanking Him for Who He is.
Next, we have a life application story. I need a couple people to help today.
Let’s pray
