What do I believe God wants us to know? God loves them
Why? True love is the greatest desire our our hearts (to be fully loved and known)
What do I believe God wants us to do? Rejoice and remember His love
Why? It brings life
ME/WE
In our world many companies have slogan or taglines that use to help quickly tell the story of their company.
And many of us know this even if we don’t know this
For example, if I say
Just do it…what company am I referring to? NIKE…and what is the message? Just go out there and do it, be athletic
mmmm mmmm have it your way…what company am I referring to?....what is the message? You can come to Burger King and order your burger anyway you like
What about this one “America runs on …Dunkin”…what is this message? The coffee that America needs caffination from is Dunkin
There is many more slogans
The is also a slogan about God, actually it is not a slogan but some people treat it as a slogan. And we heart this slogan, these Words of God from all walks of life, believer and unbeliever.
What are the Words of God that are often put into slogan that we hear on a regular basis?
IT IS THIS: GOD IS LOVE
We hear that from all walks of life....walk about to someone and say what is God like? GOD IS LOVE
They are not wrong, we are not wrong when we say it
This is true
This scriptures say it
1 John 4:7–8 ESV
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:16 ESV
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
Exodus 34:6–7 ESV
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
TENSION
BUT WHAT DOES THE LOVE OF GOD LOOK LIKE?
What do you mean Pastor Pete, love is love…so the love you have for
- The love I haveI love Malley’s Chocolate is the same as
when I say I love my wife or a familly member, best friend, family member
NO different uses of the word LOVE
Their are numerous types definitions for the the word love
Not only that how somebody loves something can be different from person to person.
For example, I can say I LOVE the BROWNS but what does that mean?
I am from Cleveland so I love the Browns, do you watch the games, no…love by location
I watch them when they are winning but if they are losing, nope…that is conditional
Then there is agape love…I love the Browns, watch every game, have Browns posters, have a Browns tattoo.
The reason I bring this out is because when we talk about the love of God we need to define what the love of God is.
What is the love of God?
Is like how we love Malley’s chocolate? Or spouse or the Browns???
Two places we will go primarly with some others verses as well…This is why it says to love God
Pause: before we go there I want us to pause and ask what it is so important…we are love seekers
Our greatest desire is to be know and loved
First is to the wedding passage…1 Cor 13 that is actually not about marriage specifically but it can be. Jt’s about how the church is to show love in everything to the point it states we could serve, preach, or give in profound ways but if there is no love it does not matter.
Paul writes this chapter to a church who was gifted, extremely gifted but they were lacking in showing love
This is passage shows us what is love and since we read God is love we are going to read the with God’s name inserted where love is placed.
Paul is going to give 16 definitions of love and we are going to say over a couple of these instead of LOVE IS, GOD IS
1 Corinthians 13:4 ESV
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
God is your father is patient. The Greek word for patient means long suffering. to suffering long with something or with someone...
I believe this a good descrptive definition of “patience” because is this not what we feel like when we are patience at times
When we need have to be patient while waiting in line…it feels like long suffering
Is this not how it feels when waiting on people sometimes?
Is this not how God is with us
He is patient with us
Some of us in this room need to hear this in this room or because some of us are the least patient with ourselves
We beat ourselves up…I should be there, but I am here
Guess who doesn’t beat you up and knows transformation takes a process?
God your Father
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Just like real children it takes time for transformation…how long did it take for you pour your own milk
Therefore if we are not patient with our transformation and growth, whose voice are we hearing? The world, flesh, or devil
God’s patience is so deep and big that it says slow to anger
Exodus 34:6 ESV
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,
DO you know the Hebrew of the word means? God is long in the nose, short nosed is to be quick to get angry…you know how people noses get red
God is short in the nose
In fact here is something interesting…when is the first time God gets mad in the Bible?
Exodus 4:14 ESV
Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses and he said, “Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Behold, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.
I love in scripture it talks about us sitting with God in our pain, walking with God, halaking…that is one of the best descriptions
Proverbs 28:1 ESV
The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.
God is kind
This attribute of love change my life as a young man. Totally changed my life
HOW?
I will ask this question: when is a time we need God’s kindness the most???
When we sin, when we mess up and fall short of God’s standards.
But the problem for me as as young man is I did not know the kindness of God when I sinned…I did not know the slow to anger father but instead believed God was short in the nose and so when I sinned I did what??
RUN and HID like Adam and Eve did in the Garden when they sinned
I screwed up, I am stupid, I am an idiot,
Is that true…is that how you think of your child when they mess up?
What are we running hiding in? (In the grace of God, in the shadow of His wings?) no DARKNESS
But what does our sin need? LIGHT and KINDNESS
To break the powers of sin and shame I need the light and kindness of God…I needed to run to God, not from God to break the
How we get victory over sin is not by hiding in darkness and trying to get out of darkness alone but by coming home the father.
Kindness of the Lord will change us
Romans 2:4 ESV
Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
This changed my life when in my lustful struggles with sin as a young man…I needed to run to God and not to him as the lost younger son in the prodigal son story with a list
Jesus paid the way for you to enter the throne room with God...
1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
God is not envious
This is not true of God.
God is a jealous God
God is
God is not arrogant or rude
God is the oppositie and what is the oppisite? humility
Philippians 2:3–5 ESV
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
God’s love says let me take care of your needs
God does not insist on His own way
Wait a minute here!!!
Doesn’t God have the 10 Words or commands
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
God gives us free will
God is not resentful
Amen, Hallajuah
God doesn’t go remember on August 6 of 2005 when you didn’t go to church?
Or on Oct 6 2023 you did that one sin
This is a sigh of relief!
Psalm 103:12 ESV
as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
God is truth
Love and truth go hand and hand
One of the best things we have in this Word is to know the truth…the truth will set you free
John 8:31–32 ESV
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Where does God give us this truth? IN His WORD, by His Spirit and in the church family.
God bears all things
1 Peter 5:7 ESV
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Anybody ever been weigh down with worry?
God has all the time in the world for you.
When I think of this verse I often get a mental image of me and at campfire with God and sharing my burdens with Him and Him taking them away.
God hopes in you
God is the good good father who hopes the best for you, belevers in you....much like I do for my sons...
I believe in them
This is the Fathers love for you
But when can I get this love!?!?
When I am good?
1 John 3:16 ESV
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
When did He do this
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Not just
Ephesians 1:4–5 ESV
even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
Not only that the
I love the WORD for love in Ex 34 the word hessed and the word doesn’t mean just love but LOYAL LOVE
God’s love you to you is loyal
it is not maybe today I will love you and tomorrow I won’t
or I will love you if you obey
Romans 8:31–39 ESV
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
