Introduction

Last week we began the first missionary journey
Paul was sharing with the proconsul (leader/mayor/governor) of the town they were in.
While Paul was preaching to this man - a Jewish Magician tried to stop Paul from sharing the good news of Jesus with the Procoinsulman.
BAR-JESUS tried to Bar Jesus!!
Paul rebukes the magician and God strikes him with blindness.
This week we are going to continue the journey and study a message that Paul preached

Scripture (v.13-43)

Part 1: V. 13-15 - The Journey and the Split

Acts 13:13–15 ESV
13 Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem, 14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.”

The Missionaries travel inland

NOTE: The gospel is meant to travel
The Journey
Paphos --> Perga (in Pamphylia)
(John Mark leaves them and goes back to Jerusalem)
Perga —> Antioch in Pisidia

John Mark leaves them

This will rise up and become a conflict later
We do not know exactly why John Mark left them here but it made Paul so angry that later in Acts, Paul would not let Barnabas bring him and splits the group.
However, we read from some of Paul’s later epistles that he Mark became a benefit to His ministry.
Some aren’t always ready for the ministry we are doing at hand but that does not mean there won’t be a time where they are.

Invited to preach at one of the synagogues and give a “word of encouragement”

It is an honor to be asked to come and speak anywhere
I was invited to speak at FCA this past week.
Our gospel is a “word of encouragement”
It is the only true source of life and hope

Part 2: (v.16-25) Paul’s Message: Leading up to Jesus - The entire Scriptures build up to Him

Paul reminds the Jewish people of their ancestors and God’s mighty works

Moses —> Jesus

Paul begins in Egypt
God brings them out of Egypt and into the wilderness
Then they conquer the land of Canaan
Then they have judges until Samuel the prophet
They they are give a King (Saul)
After Saul comes King David, the man after God’s own heart
It is promised that through the lineage of David the Savior (Jesus) will come
John the Baptist prepared the Way of the Lord
Jesus the Savior Arrives

Why do we care about this? Why did Paul say this?

The whole Bible points to Jesus
Wether it is pointing forward to Him
Or pointing backward to Him (or still forward to the second coming)
John’s baptized with water —> Christ baptized with the Holy Spirit

Part 3: “All that was written of him” (v.26-35)

Read Acts 13:26-35 - Focus on (v.29) and (33-35)

29 - All that Jesus went through had been prophesied and foretold
We see all over the old testament that the savior would die
Ex: Is. 53, Deut. 21:23 (Cursed on a tree)
Many prophecies about Christ:
No bone broken - Ps 34:20 -
Accused by False witnesses - Ps 35:11 -
Soldiers cast lots for his coat - Ps 22:18 -
Hands and feet pierced - Ps 22:1-31
33 - References Psalm 2:7 - Which Paul seems to relate to the inauguration of Christ’s kingship - referring to the resurrection and ascension
John Calvin saw this to be the time at which the inauguration and reign of Christ begins.
For Christ being called the Son is a way of honoring him and anointing him as king.
Read Psalm 2
This is important because Christ - our savior and king - reigns from on high!
Everything is subject under his feet.
34 - The sure blessing of David (Isaiah 55:3)
It was prophesied to David that one of his offspring would be the messiah and would reign eternally.
35 - Holy one will not see corruption (cited from Psalm 16:10)
This further prophecy of the resurrection -
The word for “corruption” can also be translated “decay”

Part 4: The Call to Response (v.36-43)

36-37 - David saw corruption (decay) but Christ did not - He rose from the dead
You and I will all die - our physical bodies will decay - however one day we too will be raised with Christ - Paul tells us how we can experience that.
38-39 - Forgiveness of Sins, which brings freedom from Sin through Christ
Romans 8:1–4 CSB
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, 2 because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering, 4 in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
40-41 - Don’t Be a Scoffer
Quoted from Hab 1:5
Habakkuk 1:5 ESV
5 “Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.
Do not harden your heart to Christ - do not harden your heart to the gospel
42-43: The people astounded by the gospel
The people who were listening (devout followers of Judaism) who trusted in Christ right there and turned and followed Paul and Barnabas-even asking them to return the next sabbath and talk more about this Jesus.
Will you be like them? Will you follow Christ today?

Conclusion

The Gospel is encouraging (Paul invited to share a word of encouragement)
The entire Bible points toward Jesus (whether it be forward or backward)
Respond to the Gospel (Salvation or Sanctification)
