Message Five
Romans 5:6-11; Romans 5:15-17.
ETS: The fall of man necessitated the redemption of man in Jesus Christ.
ESS: We need the redemption found only in Jesus Christ.
OSS: [Evangelistic] {I want the hearers to realize their need for redemption.}
PQ:
What facts are there in this passage about the redemption of humans?
UW: Facts
Intro.: Three Circles
TS: Let us examine a few facts together now.
The redemption of humans is possible because of God’s love in sending Jesus to die for (on behalf of) sinners. [vv. 6-8]
Notice the following words:
helpless
ungodly
sinners
This communicates that it was only God’s love that sent Jesus to die on our behalf. Nothing we do or could ever do merits our salvation.
“The only thing we contribute to our salvation is the sin that necessitates the need for salvation.” (Jonathan Edwards)
The redemption of humans provides security and protection for the believer. [vv. 9-11]
These verses are so important because they detail the benefits for the believer:
Justification (by His blood; cf. Heb. 9:22 “22 According to the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”)
Reconciliation
The key in understanding the security and protection in these verses is not to understand them as to imply the believer will not suffer any struggles at all. Rather, it is to communicate that we have such a present help in Jesus- the comfort we have in knowing that inasmuch as He overcame all barriers dying on our behalf, how much more will He do for us now as the resurrected, exalted redeemer!
The redemption of humans grants eternal life for the believer. [vv. 15-17]
The key to these verses is the phrase, “how much more” that occurs twice here and two other times prior to here [vv. 9 and 10]
“The works of Adam and Jesus have similar scope but drastically different effect. One sin plunged humanity into ruin, but God gave the gift that issued in justification in spite of our many trespasses. What was gained through Jesus is far greater than that which was lost through Adam.” (Blum, 1789)
Believers reign in life through Jesus Christ.
CONCLUSION:
[1] Do you realize your need for redemption?
[2] Have you trusted in the grace of Jesus Christ for your redemption?
