I. Sharing your life: Establishing them in Christ

A basis for all of us – both me and you

A. Begins in salvation 2 Tim 1:9a

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,

B. Called to a set apart life 2 Tim 1:9b

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,

1. Saved for a purpose

2. Saved so that we could be set apart for God

3. Need to live out this purpose / this calling

C. Based in God’s plan in Christ 2 Tim 1:9c-10a

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, ,,,

1. A plan bigger than me and my works

2. A plan before me

3. A plan that works out the purposes of God in this world through Christ

4. A plan that is now at work through Christ

5. I have the privilege of being included in the greatest plan in creation

D. Knowing He has brought life 2 Tim 1:10b

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished deathand brought lifeand immortality to light through the gospel,

1. Perspective

2. Not a life to live in fear or timidity

3. Have nothing to fear – death is abolished

4. Real life now exists

5. Eternal life has already begun – to give security – to enjoy

II. Sharing Your Life: Modeling faithful discipleship

Paul now shows what looks like to be a disciple who others can model after. Modelling is the most effective way – without it we are hypocrites – with it our words should take life

A. In Ministry

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, … 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher,

1. Knew his role, giftedness, responsibilities

2. Engaged in ministry

3. Observe me / model me / lead like Patton in the front lines / never a task too small / never a task too big /

B. In Confident suffering

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convincedthat he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me.

1. Knew that it was not easy / hardship comes as a direct result of living for God / Unswerving in the face of the expected hardships, disappointments, exhaustion, sacrifices

2. Relying on Christ’s sufficiency even when his give out / A FAITH responses – believe who I preach – He stands as a guard to accomplish what He has entrusted to me – all about Him (even in the hard times)

3. Knew that suffering for Christ is an honor not something gone wrong

C. In Faithfulness to the truth

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 13 Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

1. Consistent in his message

2. Consistent in his life of faith and love that matches his message

3. Consistent regardless of life events (good / bad / busy – structured life consistent)

4. Can say follow this pattern in your life and message as well

D. In Spirit empowerment

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.

1. Not passively guarding / Actively live out and speak what has been entrusted to you ----- what you have been entrusted with is not just info but the responsibility to build these truths into other’s lives

2. A sacred trust – given into your hands

3. Faithfully live/speak it out by the Spirit’s empowerment

III. Sharing Your Life: Some will follow through

A. Some will fall away

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 15 You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.

1. The masses are not an indication of the quality of discipleship Great falling away of many when it was no longer exciting / hard work / suffering / trials came

2. And some who were very close – the hardest is when those you love and have invested in walk away

B. Some Unashamed

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains,

1. Onesiphorus – different / not ashamed /

2. Stood firm with Paul and the gospel – not afraid or backing down

C. Some Refresh others

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains,

1. Not a whiner or complainer / A breath of life to his soul / positive encourager

D. Some offer diligent service

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me— 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day!—and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.
a. Support in the good exiting days
b. Support in the hard suffering days

E. Some will be Rewarded

(ESV) 2 Timothy 1 17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me— 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day!—and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.

IV. Sharing Your Life: Keep investing

(ESV) 2 Timothy 2 2 and what you have heard from mein the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

1. Some won’t endure / some will

2. Focus life on those who will respond - you have only so much time / energy to invest --- invest it wisely Paul says – to men who are faithful --- men growing in their love for Christ --- too many charlatans, after their own ends, not really concerned with the things of Christ. At some point you confront them with the truth, but if they do not respond you have to let them go.

3. Seek out those who are faithful / entrust to them this treasure of the Christian life and walk
