John 1:15–18 “(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”

Recap over the prologue
Witness about Jesus V.15
In this verse we see John the Baptist once again, as we saw him in verse 7. What is he known for? Key in on forerunner.
He bore witness, what is an example of witness?
Trusty google defines it this way; “to have knowledge of an event from personal observation or experience.
The original language is to “testify, bear witness, be a witness, give evidence.”
To have a personal observation. Or also to give evidence. How could he give evidence to the Jewish people if he had not seen Jesus? Did John the Baptist have anything or have a different experience that would show Jesus?
Luke 1 writes all about the importance and the fulfillment of the forerunner John. Luke foretells that John the Baptist would have the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:15 “for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.”
John being guided by the Holy Spirit is bearing the news of the Messiah that is to come. Jesus was physically coming after him, as he was born before Jesus.
Lets follow through with the tail end of that verse.
Jesus comes after John, He ranks before him/above him, But Jesus also was before John. Wut?
He who comes after me… John was born before Jesus.
Jesus ranks above John, He is God
Matthew 3:11 ““I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Also The Word is eternal…
Went from a boundless Word, to the bounded Jesus. Who is now fully man and fully God in Heaven, interceding for us.
The purpose of John the apostle showing the lineage of John, and how Jesus is ranking above him, is because there was a cult of followers rising up around John the Baptist. John was showing the inferiority of John the Baptist.
Luke 3:16 “John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
The life of the Word, he is eternal.
Witness of what he has done V. 16-18
Given grace V.16
“From HIS fullness” Wut?
“The term “fullness” (Not used elsewhere in the gospel) Seems to suggest that the full resources of God stand behind the incarnate one.”- John MacArthur
All of his attributes, and characteristics are the entirety of Him. Fully man and Fully God.
What is grace? Getting something you do not deserve. How much grace do we get? An abundance it never ends.
Given grace and truth V.17
Moses gave the law the law was truth. Could we ever fulfill the law all the time? NO.
John is not throwing the Law under the bus. What are the 10 commandments? Come from Exodus 20.
No other gods before me
No idols
Do not take the Lord’s name in vain
Remember the Sabbath
Honor father and mother
No murder
No Adultery
No stealing
No false witnessing
Not covet
Walk through this to show the point of no ones ability to do it on their own.
Jesus fulfilled the law
Matthew 5:17 ““Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
He is the fulfillment of the law, but he helps us overcome our shortcomings.
Through that grants us grace.
Ephesians 2:8–9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Given us an image of God, and made him known. V.18
Exodus 33:11 “Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.”
John 1–11 1. The Magnificent Prologue (1:1–18)

Moses, God’s agent in giving the law, was not permitted direct intimacy with God. The Unique One, however, was in an absolutely different category. That one was in the bosom (kolpon, at the “heart, side”) of the Father. He has portrayed, detailed, narrated, or exegeted (exēgēsato) the very nature of God for the world. As such he left no question about his ability to communicate to humans an intimate understanding of the Father.

John 1:14 “We have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
As we have been walking through John thus far, we’ve seen very similar things. The Word, John the Baptist, light and truth. John is leading his reader into a poem known as a Chiasm.
Show Chiasm
What is a Chiasm?
Gives a central theme, it is poetry.
Tie the verses that go together.
1-2= 18. 3-5=16-17. 6-8=15. 9-10=14. 11-13 is the Chiasm. The main theme John is emphasizing for the book. is trying to get across to the listener or reader of the gospel.
Key Verse of the prologue is John 1:11–13 “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
John 20:30–31 “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Have you received Jesus? Have you become a child of God?
Takeaways
