Overview

Possessors of this gift encourage members to be involved in and enthusiastic about the work of the Lord. Members with this gift are good counselors and motivate others to service. Exhortation exhibits itself in preaching, teaching and ministry.
Romans 12:8 CSB
if exhorting, in exhortation; giving, with generosity; leading, with diligence; showing mercy, with cheerfulness.

Definition (Greek)

paraklesis (pair- a- klee- sys) - signifies “a calling near for”, such as an advocate on behalf of another, and carries a two-fold sense of ‘exhortation’ and ‘consolation’.
Notice the two fold sense of proper biblical encouragement:
1 - exhortation
2 - Consolation
In order to properly encourage someone, to properly call someone to action forward; one must first recognize, understand, and acknowledge the reality of the audiences fear or ‘hold-back’. This is consolation. From this meeting grounds, it then becomes possible to exhort, encourage, call out from that hold-back or fear to action!

In the Bible

Word means the same as Argument or advice intended to lead the audience to action.
Acts 2:40 CSB
With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”
Peter’s testimony in Acts 2 was for the audience in Jerusalem. He opened by acknowledging that their attention was gain by rather unusual circumstances: the pouring out of the Holy Spirit, as opposed to their thought that the disciples were drunk.
Then he took them to the Scriptures, specifically the prophet Joel.
He then connects this to the Savior Jesus. This person that they had no doubt heard about, perhaps witnessed in His many appearances. Bewilderment (a hold-back).
Conviction - Acts 2:36
Acts 2:36 CSB
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
Acts 2:37 CSB
When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”
Acts 2:38–40 CSB
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”

In the Church

Romans 1:12 CSB
that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.
We are all to be exhorters to some extent!
Isn’t it interesting that all believers appear to have a small portion of virtually all of the Spiritual Gifts? That we should all be, even at the smallest level, an exhorter!
1 Thessalonians 5:11 CSB
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.
What is happening here in 1 Thess 5? There is FEAR!
1 Thessalonians 5:1–11 CSB
About the times and the seasons: Brothers and sisters, you do not need anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness. So then, let us not sleep, like the rest, but let us stay awake and be self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled and put on the armor of faith and love, and a helmet of the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.
Hebrews 3:13 CSB
But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.
Hebrews 10:24–25 CSB
And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.
Hebrews 12:5–6 CSB
And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly or lose heart when you are reproved by him, for the Lord disciplines the one he loves and punishes every son he receives.

Spiritual gift

The word Exhortation, by and large, means encouragement! And we are all called to be, even on the smallest level, encouragers.
So what about the Spiritual gift?
1 Corinthians 14:31 CSB
For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and everyone may be encouraged.
The word of God tells us that exhortation calls for applying the truths of the scriptural text to life. What could be called practical application! Indeed, exhortation is the goal of orderly worship.
Encouragement in times of fear!
2 Kings 6:15–17 CSB
When the servant of the man of God got up early and went out, he discovered an army with horses and chariots surrounding the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?” Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us outnumber those who are with them.” Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open his eyes and let him see.” So the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
