Sermon 7 in our series “Saved!”
4 sermons on Saved from What?
This is the third sermon Saved by What?
Sola Fide, Sola Gratia were the first two and now Substitutionary Atonement
We begin this morning with a question:
Why?
Why?
Why are we even speaking of the idea of a need to be saved?
If we owe a debt to God and He is benevolent, as is most often claimed, why does He not flesh out His benevolence in forgiveness of our debt?
What gives that the debt can’t be just forgotten?
Why can’t God just let it slide?
Why can’t He just keep my sin on the down low and not bring it up?
A few verses that have come up in our study so far:
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
God is Just
8 For I the Lord love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
6 since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you,
7 and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
Let us read our focal passage:
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
A Substitute is Needed
A Substitute is Needed
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Jesus is the Worthy Substitute!
Jesus is the Worthy Substitute!
1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree,
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
His Work is Atoning!
His Work is Atoning!
1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
He is the remover of wrath.
