1) Who is John?
2) Why is he worth listening to.
3) Where have we been . In chapter 1 John introduced the topic of sin and the proper attitude of the believer toward it. Then in chapter 2 he took up the topic Jesus Christ the messiah the Son God who took on himself the sins of the world in order to restore us to right relationship with God. Here, and now the third major topic of love is discussed.
1) What does it actually mean to love the way the John is commanding us to love. (Love is impossible outside of the Holy Spirit) (:13-12
a) Cain as the counter example(3:12)
b) Why does the world hate the righteous. (3:12-d)
2) Application to us here at Calvary (3:13-15)
a) Don’t be surprised if the world hates you.
b) Love for the christian community, those you do right, confirms that one has passed over from death to life. (3:14)
c) Everyone who hates the righteous person is a murderer. (3:15)
d) No murderer has eternal life. (3:15)
3) Love in action or laying down one's life. (3:16-18)
a) Christ's example defines love. (3:16a-b)
b) Believers ought to follow Christ's example (3:16c)
c) Compassion for the needs of others is a way of laying down's one life (3:17)
Love must be express not only in word but also in deeds (3:18)
