And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

1. Scripture often talks about a place known as the wilderness!

i. You see this with Hagar & her son Ishmael.
King James Version (Genesis Chapter 21:14)
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.
ii. You see this with Moses.
King James Version (Exodus Chapter 3:1)
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
iii. You see this with the Israelites.
King James Version (Exodus Chapter 16:1)
And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.
iv. You even see this with Jesus.
King James Version (Matthew Chapter 4:1)
4 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
The fact is that the idea of this place known as the wilderness is actually woven throughout scripture. So much so that we even reference it in our singing.
THERE’S A LIGHT IN THE WINDOW. THE TABLE’S SPREAD IN SPLENDOR. SOMEONE’S STANDING BY THE OPEN DOOR. I CAN SEE A CRYSTAL RIVER. SO I MUST BE NEAR FOREVER. LORD I’VE NEVER BEEN THIS HOMESICK BEFORE
SEE THE BRIGHT LIGHT SHINE. IT’S JUST ABOUT HOME TIME. I CAN SEE MY FATHER STANDING AT THE DOOR. THIS WORLD’S BEEN A WILDERNESS. I’M READY FOR DELIVERANCE. LORD I’VE NEVER BEEN THIS HOMESICK BEFORE.
We have even brought this biblical idea of wilderness into our worship.

2. What does the wilderness represent then?

THIS WORLD’S BEEN A WILDERNESS.
I would go so far to say that lifes journey can be compared to what is known as a wilderness.
But if you really want to get biblical and technical about it you could say that the christian journey is compared to a wilderness. From the time you come out from under Pharoah to the time you eneter the promised land heaven you are a sojourner. Scripture speaks of this.
When talking of Noah and Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and Sara, scripture says in Hebrews 11 verse 13 that.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

This earth was not their home.
King James Version (1 Peter Chapter 1:18)
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
A sojourner is a person who resides temporarily in a place.
The wilderness is a place that God leads you through with a destination in mind. Time into eternity.

3. The wilderness can be full of blessing, but the wilderness is also a place of struggle!

i. Hagar, Ishmael, & Moses. Can you imagine what they must have felt like and went through.
ii. The Isrealites.
The bitter waters.
The subtle attacks of the enemy.
Balak & Balaam.
The outright attacks of the enemy.
The Amalekites. Joshua and the Israelites. Moses, Aaron & Hur.
iii. Jesus.
The wrestling and fighting againt the devil.

4. Through the journey and the struggle people often get tired, people actually get worn out!

i. It is no doubt that Hagar got tired.

And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. 16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.

ii. It is no doubt that Moses got tired.
Sat down by a well in Midian!
iii. The Israelites got worn out especially when fighting the enemy.

Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon;

iv. Jesus himself grew tired.

Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

5. God loves to and wants to strengthen His people through the journey of the wilderness!

i. God showed up to Hagar!

And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. 19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.

ii. God showed up to Moses!

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

iii. God showed up to the Israelites!

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

iv. God showed up to Jesus!

Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

And remember what the Apostle Peter said, “There are times of refreshing that come in the presence of the Lord!”

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard,

That the everlasting God, the LORD,

The Creator of the ends of the earth,

Fainteth not, neither is weary?

tThere is no searching of his understanding.

29  He giveth power to the faint;

And to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

30  Even the youths shall faint and be weary,

And the young men shall utterly fall:

31  But they that wait upon the LORD wshall renew their strength;

They shall mount up with wings xas eagles;

They shall run, and not be weary;

And they shall walk, and not faint.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills,

From whence cometh my help.

2  My help cometh from the LORD,

Which made heaven and earth.

3  He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:

He that keepeth thee will not slumber.

4  Behold, he that keepeth Israel

Shall neither gslumber nor sleep.

5  The LORD is thy keeper:

The LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.

6  The sun shall not smite thee by day,

Nor the moon by night.

7  The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil:

He shall mpreserve thy soul.

8  The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in

From this time forth, and even for evermore.
