INTRODUCTION:
When we come to Jesus He heals our deepest needs and we leave changed.
When we come to Jesus He heals our deepest needs and we leave changed.
1 And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.
Capernaum - his and his disciples Home town. Galilee area. Name literally means a town of sorrow... Brooksville joke?
It was reported - Word got out, Jesus was home and that he was doing miracles. There was no real doctors back then no way to get healing so people would come from far to see him.
2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.
There was no more room - You would have throught there was a food truck outside or something. Small home, probobly maxed out at 25-30 people.
Everyone was here to see Jesus and maybe he was going to bless him.
He was preaching the word to them - Greatest preacher of all time.
3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.
four men - came bringing their friend to them.
could not get near - Not only could they not get in, but they could not get near it.
Could this be like people not getting near Jesus because of religious people....The people surrounding him wasn’t even his real followers. Don’t let them distract you from seeing Jesus.
they removed the roof above him - First off, not jesus’ house. We would be agry. Explain how homes worked back them.
Paralytic lay - I don’t trust my friends enough. They guys would drop me.
5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Jesus saw their faith - Not HIS!, but their faith. He was included but it wasn’t all about him.
saw their faith - You can’t actually see faith, but you can see the effects of it. They believed, so that belief resulted in an action.
We are saved through faith. It was the action, but if you truely are saved it will result in action.
Son - Only guy in all the gospels he called someone son.
He wasn’t his son until the sins are forgiven.
your sins are forgiven - Jesus went after the bigger issue. They lowered down not to get forgivennes. Many of us here today might be here to get something from God. But that is not our real issue. The real issue is we need forgivenss of our sins.
Gospel explanaition.
6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
scribes - the religious people. But they were religious to look good, not to be good.
questioning in their hearts - They were thinking things, not saying it, just thinking:
Blasphemy - Sin punishable by death.
who can forgive sins but God alone - we know this is true. We often say, you can’t judge me, only God can judge me.
8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?
Uh-oh - haha he read their minds. Like if youw ere thinking about the food trucks and I just turn to you and was like. Hey Steve, I am talking here why you tthinking about the food.
ILLUSTRATION - Liberty, flirting with Beth and prof heard it.
9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’?
Your sins are forgiven - The true answer is the first, but there was no way to verify if that happened. When you get saved from your sin, you might have a smile on your face..But there is no physical differince.
10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—
Son of Man - was a term in the Jewish culture that referred to the Savior or Messiah.
So the point of the miracle was to show that he could actually forgive sins.
Three of the gospels tell this story.
11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.”
Rise - get up from the disease. Get up from everything that broke you.
pick up your bead,
and go home . - When you leave Jesus, you leave change. Everyone is welcomed here no matter what their story is, but you don’t leave the saem way you came int.
12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
rose and immediately -
Before theme all - they all saw it. He was probobly stepping over them. His friends on the roof praising God. Everyone is still confused
amazed and glorifed God -
CONCLUSION:
ILLUSTRATION - HAVE SOMEONE WALK IN??????
Story of being interupted while speaking.
