Keep the Sabbath Day Holy

Which day of the week do you think is the most special day?
God chose one day of the week to be a special day. He didn’t do it for any other day, but He chose the we call the Sabbath Day.
We’ve looked at the first three commandments.
Do you remember what they were?
Exodus 20:3 NIV
“You shall have no other gods before me.
Who remembers what the 2nd commandment is?
Exodus 20:4 (NIV)
“You shall not make for yourself an image.
Do you remember the 3rd Commandment?
Exodus 20:7 NIV
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Today, I want to talk about the 4th commandment.
Let’s read Exodus 20:8-11
Exodus 20:8–11 NIV
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
If you were to look at a calendar, what is the 1st day of the week?
We use what is called the Gregorian calendar, but the Israelites used a different calendar based on the moon, called a lunar calendar.
The day started at around 6pm and ended at 5:59 pm.
So they had night before they had day…so when they had their Sabbath or day of rest it started Friday night at 6 and went until about 6 o’clock on Saturday.
In Canada, or at least in modern times, we treat it as Sunday is our day of rest.
People used to get fines if they were out working on Sunday in their fields. It was called the Lord’s day act.
Our bodies need rest, so God wants us to take time and rest.
God wanted the Israelites to rest on the Sabbath. This helped them remember that God created the world.
Genesis 2:2 NIV
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
We aren’t very good at that. We like to keep busy, but Jesus said
Mark 2:27 NLT
Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
Do you think it’s important to go to church and worship God?
if yes, why?
As Christians we go to church on Sunday. Sometimes we call it the Lord’s day.
After Jesus died on the cross, He rose from the dead early on Sunday morning.
On Easter Sunday, we remember that Jesus is alive.
Each and every day, we need to take time and worship God. He doesn’t want us to worship other gods. He is the only true God.
On Sundays when we go to church, we can worship God with other people.
You don’t have to go to church to be a Christian, but church is important because we can encourage each other. We can pray for each other. We can hear God’s word and we can corporately worship the Lord.
Do you do anything special on Sundays?
Maybe family dinner. Maybe you invite friends and family over to enjoy what God has blessed us with.
What did you do for Thanksgiving?
When we have special times like this, it can remind us how much we love our families as well has how much we love God.
I want to read a Scripture for you from
Acts 2:42 NIV
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
This is what the first followers of Christ did.
Sometimes when we go to church, we can be so preoccupied with what we were doing before we got to church or what we want to do after.
Next time when you go to church I want to encourage you to keep your focus on worshipping God.
Even when we aren’t in church on a Sunday, it’s important that we take time to worship and give thanks to God.
Remember, as you grow up, you will start to realize why God wants us to rest.
We work better when we are rested.
Let’s pray!
Life application.
