Let’s pray.
Chapter 9 Noah and his family are now off the ark. They are about to settle in to the new humanity. This is where Moses picks up. God begins to give instructions.
Genesis 9:1 ESV
1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
What is the first thing God does here in chapter 9. Don’t tell me we serve a selfish God. He blesses them. He saved their lives from all the destruction shouldn’t that be enough. but no. God’s love is grandiose that he cant help but lavish it on them. So he saves them from complete and udder destruction and then blesses them again. With what you say. His presence. His anointing. His love. His communication. Himself. He shows up to say the story isn’t over. I havent forgotten you I am not going to leave you so let me communicate that with you and that is a blessing. Plus there had to be some sort of physical blessing also beecause he gives an instruction to follow the blessing. Be frutiful and mulitpy and fill the earth. Sound familiar to you?
Genesis 9:2–4 ESV
2 The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. 4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
How many foodies in here read that like I did. One more time for the cheap seats. God is ok with us eating meat. He has declared it right here. He has established the ground work for the relationship between man kind and animal kind and they are under us and they should be afraid of us. This is why deer run away. This is why squirrels and rabbits run away. This is why mama bear will rip your face off if you get close to her cubs. FEAR. What cast out fear. Perfect love. So when it is all said and done, we will get to cuddle the big bear. We will get to lay down next to the lion. For some reason snakes make it and we will be able to go into the pit. We will get to ride the ostrich because in the new earth fear will not be present. But right now we are in the fallen thing and God says you can eat the animals. But he gives a qualification. Don’t eat it with the blood still in it. You must drain the blood because blood is life.
Blood was the sign of mercy for Israel at the first Passover (Exodus 12:13).Blood sealed God’s covenant with Israel (Exodus 24:8).Blood sanctified the altar (Exodus 29:12).Blood set aside the priests (Exodus 29:20).Blood made atonement for God’s people (Exodus 30:10).Blood sealed the new covenant (Matthew 26:28).Blood justifies us (Romans 5:9).Blood brings redemption (Ephesians 1:7).Blood brings peace with God (Colossians 1:20).Blood cleanses us (Hebrews 9:14 and 1 John 1:7).Blood gives entrance to God’s holy place (Hebrews 10:19).Blood sanctifies us (Hebrews 13:12).Blood enables us to overcome Satan (Revelation 12:11).
He added the meat to the salad.
People say that i repeat things a lot but I have noticed that God did that a lot. So if he is repeating something then I will repeat it.
We have dominion over the animals. They are not elevated to be equal with us. Quit worshipping the animal. Look at this.
James 3:7 NIV
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind,
So even in the new testament we see the hierarchy. Then to take it even further with Gods requirement look at this...
Genesis 9:5–7 ESV
5 And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. 6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. 7 And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”
In this God is setting even higher the distinction between us and them. Look he says all the animals of the earth of the sea and of the air are given to you as food. But you better drain the blood…but if your blood is spilled it is a greater offense.
Requirement of taking a human life doesn’t come when we go hunting but if you kill a man, your life is required. Let me make a distinction here. The concept discussed here is murder. Not self defense. Not time of war, and in fact God even commands capital punishment.
You realize that in Americas 247 year history of all the major wars we have been in, starting the revolutionary war, we have lost 1,282,204 men and women. Guess how many abortions have happened per year since Roe v wade. 63 million. So you do the math that is 50 years into 63 million. That is 1.26 on average for those dates. God says he will demand the blood from beast if they kill a human. what do you think is going to happen to us. This is not condemnation but it is to bring recognition of the seriousness that God puts on human life. If he does, so should we. He is making it very clear that we created human beings in our image and they are to be treated differently.
Numbers 35:31 NKJV
31 Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death.
Hey look at this. There is no pay off or a fine that you can make if you murder. This is a place where i take exception with our judicial system. I like the trial. I like the appeal. But after that appeal. No get off early no parole no deal making. You murdered someone. You are going to die. That’s harsh. According to you but the one who created you said this is the way and if that is the way, it is the way. I am not talking vigilanty. Through the system you were found guilty. There is no reasonable doubt. If we followed this, i believe we would see the change that God had hoped and there would be less murders. We would have less problems in the jails. There are all kinds of what if’s. Here is my answer to all of those. God said. I would rather say, I followed the Lord. All the what if’s He is big enough to sort out if I follow him right.
The death penalty is not just here as a deterrent but more of a statement of the unique human value to God. This is how much he values us. This is how much he values you!!! You can repent and be forgiven but we must not act like it isn’t a big deal.
Then look at verse 7 again. The reason that this is so pointed because God is saying to Noah, I want you to repopulate people like you. who are obedient to me. I want more and more poeple who will follow me as you di. Who will do what I say, when I say it and how I say it. this is why in the church…have kids!!!! Raise them right. Have kids until god says don’t have any. Well you know what causes that don’t ya. I have said that to people and I realize how dumb that sounds and how fullish I sound as thought I am the first one to ever say that. The truth is yeah we know what causes it and we are married and God said its ok so we are going to continue. How better the world might be if Christians took that to heart and repopulated as quickly as other religions or sects of the world. If we really took it to heart. This is why big families on farms were so popular. Because you had the help. we quit farming so we quit needing the help. we relied on some guy 100 miles away to hire us for a job and we would become dependent upon him. No I am not saying go back to farming but i would in a moment honestly. Listen to this. A survey taken in the 1900’s said that people believed they only needed 72 things in life to function normally and be content. 50 years later that same survey was done in the same age bracket and it jumped to nearly 500. The bible says we need 2.
1 Timothy 6:8 NIV
8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.
I could only imagine what that survey would say today. But God is telling them I want you to replenish the earth will people like you. If we look at just america and our switch to smaller and smaller families expecially from the church how that has affected the country. You can tell the country is hurting because the church has gotten smaller.
Now verse 8
Look at how this covenant grows.
Genesis 9:8–11 ESV
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
He starts by talking to just Noah and his sons. Then he says I have looked beyond just you to your descendants. I know who is coming after you and the covenant that I have made will transcend your life onto the life of your descendants. Thank you Lod. Then he goes even further to say, I will also make some covenant with the earth and beast. God is so good. The beast will benefit because of their association to us. We don’t get flooded, therefor they don’t get flooded.
Then verse 12
Genesis 9:12–17 ESV
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
Ok here goes the push back where I might get in a little bit of hot water. we know the earth is not going to be destroyed by water. How do we know this. Because of the rainbow. Listen to me, no sin is greater than any other in the separation of God. Meaning that if I sin one time or a 100 I am not any further from God. As soon as I repent he is with me. He causes me to repent. Everyone understand. However there is a movement in our society that has stolen this sign and has successfully made it a beacon for unrepentant sin. They say we reject everything that God says in genesis about gender, marriage, and sexuality and we live our own life, or they try and make an argument that God has changed his standards on that stuff. Do you think it is a coincidence that they chose the rainbow as their marker? It was not random. it was the devil stating that we thumb our nose at your standard. I mean truly the rainbow would be a good sign about for ethnicity. They are using the rainbow to say so you aren’t going to destroy the earth again so we can live how we want. This is a defiant move against God. Now their sin needs no different repentance but it needs repentance.
So he is saying though that he will never destroy by water. There is destruction coming to this earth and it will be by fire and there is nothing that we can do to stop it.
We are pretty clear on what God is saying. That they don’t have to worry about rain clouds because the rainbow will remind them. Now know what they just went through. They have never seen a cloud or rain. Then it comes and everyone is wiped out. What do you think will happen the next time they see a cloud if God doesn’t make this sign. They running for the ark. I mean my dog runs under the bed every single time there is thunder. I could only imagine I would do the exact same thing if the only history i had with clouds and rain was that the entire world was wiped out. So God made the rainbow so we would know not to hide in fear.
So in his judgement, we again see mercy. YOu ever notice that every time we see judgmeent we see mercy. BOTH ARE ACCURATE. BOth are Him. You cannot understand mercy without an understanding of Judgement.
Ok here we go. I pray yall ready for this.
Genesis 9:18–19 NIV
18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth.
See a name that is familiar in that? Moses makes sure to mark one of the sons of Ham. The canaanites will become a huge problem for the israelites and we will see that later. Understand this aobut the canaanites. God will eventually ask his people to wipe them out because they were a thoroughly corrupt people. these people were so wicked. We are just making the circle back around to people like this.
Every single nationality ethnicity comes from these three sons. THey were scattered over the whole earth.
Everyone hold on to your seats.
Genesis 9:20 ESV
20 Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard.
He became a farmer. Probably something he did before. He planted a vineyard. We do not believe tis to be the first vineyard ever. In times of peace people of God planted, olives figs and grapes.
Psalm 104:15 NKJV
15 And wine that makes glad the heart of man, Oil to make his face shine, And bread which strengthens man’s heart.
and also
Proverbs 20:1 NKJV
1 Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.
So it is funny to me that when people use scripture they only use the scripture that fits their argument. But I will say that we are told not to be drunk. We are told it isn’t fit for kings. So the optimal solution is just stay away. Majority of scripture speaks against it. We spend way too much time searching for things that are allowed in scriputre instead of searching the things that are commanded. Let me search what he requires of me. How many things am I allowed to do.
Genesis 9:21 ESV
21 He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent.
Kids close your ears. Here is Noah the grandson of Enoch. One of 8 that is saved and he is the reason the other 7 are there. And he is drunk!! Why you getting on to Noah? Because drunkenness is a sin and leads to all sorts of debauchery. Take a pic of these verses and see.
Job 12:25, Psalms 107:27, Proverbs 23:21&31, Romans 13:13, 1 Cor 6:10, Galatians 5:21
So the first time we see wine mentioned. The first interaction recorded and we see the bad side of it. We see how it takes a most righteous man and causes him to lay down naked and be completely ashamed.
Why in the world do you think he started drinking? We don’t really know but can you imagine what all he has been through? everyone he knows is dead and I am sure he told them what was gonna happen. All of his friends, his aunts, uncle, sisters, brothers. All gone. So I would imagine this started because he wanted to just drown the sorrows a little bit and it just got away from him. But again let me point out that he isn’t just sitting around with his sons and talking about football game. He is alone, drinking by himself. Isolated.
I am not saying the bible says to drink is wrong because the bible doesn’t say that. It simply shows the results and there are far too many negative.
Now we get to this next part and
Genesis 9:22 ESV
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside.
First of all Ham, why you going into your father’s tent uninvited. Wrong. Second the bible says he saw the nakedness of his father. The word there saw could give us the actual expression to leer at. To stare at. To gaze upon with lust. Some theories go even further to say that there was actual incest relationship to happen. Without Noah’s consent obviously. Just as a side note, the city of sodom and gomorrah, is filled with and started by the descendants of Ham. The plain text is that he went in saw his father’s nakedness and then went out to make fun of him with his brothers.
Genesis 9:23 ESV
23 Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.
they would have no part in it. Love covers all sins. they back up into the tent not looking and cover up their father. They were not going to disrespect him. We are to honor our father and mother even if they are not worthy of the honor. We honor them because god commands it of us.
In this culture here one of the worst things you can do is dishonor your parents even if they don’t deserve it.
Genesis 9:24–25 ESV
24 When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”
Wait Noah, why you cursing Canaan? Ham did the mistake. Why you handing down this harsh punishment to his youngest son? this is the first time we see a curse handed down generation and we see it go off the rails really quickly.
But why. Because in verse one of this chapter, God blessed Noah and his sons. Noah could not undo the blessing from God.
So essentially Noah is cutting out the line of Ham. Look at this
Genesis 9:26–27 ESV
26 He also said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant. 27 May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.”
Even further these guys will rule over Canaan. We see that Shem is truly the one in line with god. YOu see this. REmember I told you when it talked about the sons of Noah back in 7 that it was listed Shem Ham and Jepheth. Because Shem is about to lead us to the father of our faith.
Abram is a descendant of Shem.
So Ham gets cut out. The Canaanites become the enemy of Israelites. Now watch this.
Abram name is changed correct. God doesn’t just completely change it, he adds something to it.
Pronounce this for me
Abra-ham.
We see here that God doesn’t lose blessings. What he does is he changes Abram to Abraham adding what would have been hams blessing to Him and he tells Abraham, then later Moses and Joshua you will go and take the land that belongs to the canaanites.
He took the spot. He was grafted in. Again the gospel. Take people that don’t belong and make them belong.
Genesis 9:28–29 ESV
28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 All the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.
Moses is sometimes so abrupt lol. He just don’t sugar coat nothing.
