Introduction
Everything God created was for the purpose of glorifying Himself. God spoke the whole world into existence, he formed the earth with his hand.
Ps 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
The creation of the world showed:
God’s Sovereignty- God is the supreme ruler of the world. All things were created by Him and for Him
God’s Power - He created everything out of nothing
God’s Wisdom - Prov. 3:19 “The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; By understanding hath he established the heavens.”
And so many more of God’s attributes are shown in creation.
Genesis 1 is a helicopter view of creation, while Genesis 2 is a live picture of God’s creation of Plants and Humans.
Man formed from the earth vs. 4-7
Man formed from the earth vs. 4-7
God formed the plants of the field and the herbs of the field but their was no one to tend to the plants that were created.
There was no rain on the earth because there was no need for rain. The world was formed and it had the perfect atmosphere without the need for rain.
Look at the phrase the Lord God had not caused it to rain. God is the only one that can send the rain, humans have no control over the weather, only God.
There was a mist from the earth that watered the whole earth. there was no need for rain because God watered the plants everyday with just what they needed.
vs. 7 God formed man out of the dust of the ground, Genesis 1 tells us that God made man in his image and here it tells us that he formed us
The word formed here means Made; shaped; molded; planned; arranged
God spent time making man, man was the pinnacle of creation.
Not only did God form us, but he breathed life into us.
Why does life matter? Because the creator of the universe breaths life into us. Our life and our breath comes from him.
Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.”
Because God formed us and gave us his breath, man became a living soul
From our first breath to our final breath we were created to praise the Lord.
The garden of Eden vs. 8-17
The garden of Eden vs. 8-17
The garden of Eden was planted by God
Every tree that was growing not only was pleasant to look at, but it also good for food.
the tree of life was in the middle of the Garden (now in heaven) along with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
The land in the garden was rich and full of nutrients and all kinds of stones
Gold - precious metal
Bdellium- Possibly a precious material, found in the land of Havilah along with onyx and gold (Gen 2:12). Manna is compared in appearance to bdellium (Num 11:7).
Onyx - precious gem
Man was put in the Garden
Man was put in the garden to tend it. Man was part of a work fare program not a well fare program.
Even before man sinned Adam was still required to do work.
God’s first command to man
there was one tree in the midst of the garden that was forbidden.
the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was on the forbidden list.
The moment anyone ate of it they would surely die.
Not only would they now physically die they would also spiritually die by committing the first sin.
They had every fruit or herb that they could ever want except for this fruit. Them eating this fruit would separate them from a Holy God.
The creating of woman and the first family vs. 18-25
The creating of woman and the first family vs. 18-25
God said it wasn’t good for man to be alone
Think about in creation there were a male and a female of everything that God had created. God commanded them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
God formed Adam out of the dust of the ground and breathed life into him, but Adam didn’t have anyone to marry.
God said he would create an help meet for him
The word meet here means completer.
God would create woman to be a completer not a competer.
As God was creating the beast of the field, the fowl of the air he would send them to Adam and he would name them.
Every creature that God had created had an help meet except for Adam.
God caused a deep sleep to happen to Adam and the Lord took a rib out of Adam and formed a woman.
After God removed the rib he closed up the flesh, there was no recovery time for Adam after his surgery
Notice God brought the woman to man, thats a good lesson to us to allow God to bring our wife or husband to us.
When we get married we come one flesh
Adam called her woman because she was taken out of man.
God set the pattern for families in the very beginning of time
Man leaves father and mother
Man cleaves to his wife
Cleave - unite, to adhere with strong attachment
A man should leave his mom and his dad and become one with the wife that God has given him.
They were naked and they weren’t ashamed
Conclusion
Conclusion
God took great care when he created the world, it is bizarre to believe that the world evolved and there wasn’t a God in complete control of the whole thing.
We have a God who formed the earth with his hand, planted fruits, vegtables and herbs in a garden, formed man from the dust of the earth and breathed life into man, he took a rib out of man and formed woman, and gave the woman to the man and gave them the pattern for families.
God took great care and we can trust the biblical account of creation and the foundation of the world
