Text: Romans 15:1-7
Intro: Only twice in the book of Roman’s is the word “strong” used. Once here in Romans 15 and the other is back in Romans 4:20 concerning Abraham.
And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
vs. 19 - “And being not weak in faith”
vs. 20 “but was strong in faith”
vs. 21 “being fully persuaded”
This helps us have understanding when we see the word again used in Chapter 15.
Let’s look at the:
Weak - Romans 14:1 “Him that is weak in the faith receive ye...” Also (15:1)
We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Strength has nothing to do with the physical, but it entirely spiritual! Strength is not a production of man, his intellect, or his will. Strength is the product of God!
Vs. 4 is quoted from Psalm 69 - a Messianic Psalm of Christ. Jesus is our EXAMPLE:
For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up;
And the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
Quoted by Christ concerning Himself - In fact 7 verses from Psalm 69 are quoted in the New Testament! They all concern Christ!
They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head:
They that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty:
Then I restored that which I took not away.
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
Non of this was in physical strength, or in great power. They were strong in faith, because they believed God and they let God!
Vs. 7 - Receive… as Christ also received us to the glory of God… Think about all of that included…
We must stand on the truth, but in addition to lovingly allow differences among believers in those areas that are not based in the black and white truths of the word of God.
