John 5:19–47 NKJV
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. “If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. “I do not receive honor from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

AG: TS: This section is Christ’s statement of His deity. It is one of the greatest Christology discussions in the Bible.
We saw in John 5 that jesus said He and the Father were at work:
John 5:17
John 5:17 NKJV
But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
The Jewish leaders understood His meaning to be that He was equal with God. It is the claim of John 1 and theme of the the gospel of John. For this act, they seek to kill Jesus. They are hostile and will remain so.

The Trinity and Jesus (5:19–20, 23)

1. The Father loves the Son (5:19–20).
John 5:19–20 NKJV
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
In response to their hostility to His claim to be equal with God, Jesus becomes even more forceful.
He again points out that God (Father and Son) are working and have always been working.
They work in tandem at all times.
He never went rouge and set Himself against the Father
What He did displayed He was as Great as the Father.
2. The Father honors the Son (5:23).
John 5:23 NKJV
that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
God intends for all to honor the Son
Philippians 2:9 NKJV
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
Philippians 2:10–11 NKJV
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus was no mere ambassador to a monarch, He is the monarch!
King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
Jesus turned the tables on His accusers
They accused Him of blaspheme for making himself equal with God.
He says they have blasphemed by not honoring Him. Rejecting Him is rejecting the Father!

The tasks assigned to Jesus (5:21–22, 24–29)

then Jesus discusses His assignment
1. He imparts eternal life (5:21, 24, 26).
John 5:21 NKJV
For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.
John 5:24 NKJV
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
John 5:26 NKJV
For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,
Jesus came to seek and save the lost
everlasting life comes to those who “hears My word and believes in Him who sent me”
2. He will raise the dead (5:25, 28–29).
John 5:25 NKJV
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
John 5:28–29 NKJV
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
All people will be resurrected
a. Some to everlasting joy (5:25, 28–29a)
John 5:25 NKJV
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
John 5:28–29 NKJV
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
The saved will live again with him.
He will reward us and we will enjoy eternal fellowship with Him
b. Some to everlasting punishment (5:29b)
John 5:29 NKJV
and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
Sadly, those who have rejected his offered salvation will be resurrected for judgment
3. He judges all men (5:22, 27).
John 5:22 NKJV
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
John 5:27 NKJV
and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
Authority to judge is with the Son
Matthew 28:18 NKJV
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
He is God and all authority is His

Testimonies concerning Jesus (5:30–47)

This section goes back to the teachings of the Law on truth being established by witnesses.
He presents witnesses to His divinity
Witness to the supernatural claims of Jesus comes from four sources.
1. From John the Baptist (5:31–35):
He preached the truth.
John 5:31–35 NKJV
“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.
John the Baptist had prepared the way for Jesus and testified to His divinity
He had pointed people to Jesus
2. From his own works (5:36):
His teachings and miracles come from the Father.
John 5:36 NKJV
But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.
Greater than any person’s testimony was jesus’ own works
He had just healed a man!
He had turned water into wine!
His works displayed He was the Creator
John records these and other major signs that proclaim to all Jesus is Messiah!
3. From the Father (5:30, 37–38):
The Father has testified about him.
John 5:30 NKJV
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
John 5:37–38 NKJV
And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.
John the Baptist had heard the Father
Matthew 3:13–17 NKJV
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
The Father had spoken in their own hearts as well.
They should be under conviction
4. From the Scriptures (5:39–47):
The Scriptures point to him, but though the people say they believe the Scriptures, they don’t believe in him.
John 5:39–47 NKJV
Search- Jesus challenges them to dive deeply into the Word
Jesus was following them and fulfilling them
Paul summarizes the gospel in 1 Cor 15 and repeats “according to the Scriptures” to emphasize the same point.
1 Corinthians 15:1–5 NKJV
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.
1 Corinthians 15:6 NKJV
After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep.
Jesus is declared cover to cover in the Scriptures
That is why the work of the Gideons is so important
Jesus specifically mentions Moses’ writing about Him
Deuteronomy 18:15 NKJV
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear,

Conclusion:

Jesus presents a defense and testimony to Himself on this occasion. Here at the beginning of hostilities, He declares Himself and also offers an opportunity to receive Him.
At His arrest and sham of a trial, He remains silent. There is no need for further testimony and they had already pre-judged Him.
The real question is, do you believe His testimony?
Is He YOUR King?
If not, receive His gift of salvation today
If yes, does Your life show it?
