Natural and Supernatural

Jesus and his disciples are crossing the sea
a violent storm cause all to give up any hope of survival
they woke up Jesus and he calmed the deadly storm
the storm that cold not be tamed
a storm that was above the ability of a seasoned fisherman
a storm that all hope is lost
they get to the other side in the decapolis
a gentile area
Jesus has a Divine predestined meeting with a man who is demon possessed
in fact this man cannot be tamed or locked up
Mark 5:2–4 LSB
And when He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him, who had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
this man is totally controlled be the demons in him
and there is nothing that anyone can do to help him
he lives in the tombs
wears no clothes
screaming all night cutting himself with sharp rocks
driven by the demons into unpopulated regions
Jesus had just displayed his power over the impossible deadly storm
now we are going to see the power of Jesus over the supernatural
Read Luke 8 26-39.

The Demons

what did they believe?
V 28 Jesus is the Son of God, God
the fell at His feet and begged for mercy
V 28, 31 in Judgement and punishment
They prayed V 28
V 31 -32 pleaded with Jesus
Jesus answered their prayer
so the demons believe in Jesus pray to Jesus but are not saved
so is a lot of church goers today
their belief is a head knowledge but not a saving faith
they pray and do other churchy things
but are no more saved then these demons
these demons are in possession of this man
they have taken control
they are just like this storm to the disciples
the storm possessed the disciples and there was nothing that they could do about it

The Man

was in complete bondage to these demons
he had no hope probably thinking the only way of escape is suicide
voices in his head telling him what to do
he was unable to change anything
he was already spiritually dead in trespasses and sins
already dead under the headship of Adam
he was in bondage to sin
satan was in full control of his life, and wanted him dead physically
this man was naked an afraid
did not know Jesus, nor was he looking for Him
did not know there was a savior
his song that he sung over and over is
I was sinking deep in sin, Far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within, Sinking to rise no more;
he was sinking beneath the waves
he was like Jonah
Jonah 2:5–6 (LSB)
“Water encompassed me to my very soul. The great deep surrounded me, Weeds were wrapped around my head.
“I went down to the base of the mountains. The earth with its bars closed behind me forever,
He was like Lazarus who was dead and rotting
there was no hope for this man
nor had he any hope for himself
he would have done exactly what the demons told him to do

But Jesus

Came across the lake for the purpose of freeing this man
for the purpose of saving this man
giving him a new life
He purchased this mans freedom with His precious blood
this man did not seek Jesus,
but Jesus came to him
Jesus demanded that the demons leave this man
and they left for good -- unlike --
Matthew 12:43–45 LSB
“Now when the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it. “Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order. “Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. That is the way it will also be with this evil generation.”
unless the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in some one after a demon leaves
the demon can just return there is nothing stopping it
When Jesus comes into a life and gives new life a miracle takes place
one is born again/ regenerated
the Holy Spirit indwells that person
can no longer be demon possessed
he can now sing all of the song
1 I was sinking deep in sin, Far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within, Sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea Heard my despairing cry, From the waters lifted me– Now safe am I.
Refrain: Love lifted me, Love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me; Love lifted me, Love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me.
because of Jesus there was a change

The Change

V 34-35
the man was sitting, clothed, and in his right mind
V 38 the man begged to be with Jesus
what a change the Lord Jesus brings
with Saul he went from being a Jesus hater
a persecutor of the church
to a church preacher over night
Zacheus went from being a thief to giving money away
this man went from being danger to society,
to an asset to society
might have become the best man in town
Jesus changes our nature
makes us a new person.

Stay and Witness

V 38 39 I want to go with you
Jesus wanted him to stay and be a witness
tell of the great things God has done
V 37 the people were afraid of Jesus
asked Him to go away
so Jesus got back into the boat
Jesus mission was to free this one man
to make him a new creation
now He is leaving
this mans influence on the people of that area had an effect
V 39
Mark 7:31–33 LSB
And again He went out from the region of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of the Decapolis. And they brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they pleaded with Him to lay His hand on him. And Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue;
the crowd who was afraid are now crowding around Jesus
what was the difference?
the witness and life of this ex demon possessed man
are people drawn to Jesus bu your witness and life?
you might be the only person in someones life that can testify of the power and love of Jesus to change a life
