Lesson 1

Class one - Introduction (Redemption the Central theme of the Bible)
Today we start into a fantastic, exciting, challenging class that will take your attention to the scriptures (Especially from Ephesians and Colossians). I suggest taking notes. If I get going to fast at some time, slow me down for the subject of God’s eternal purpose, God’s scheme of redemption is important for us to know.
Vocabulary word: Redemption from Oxford dictionary: the action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil; the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or clearing a debt.
The Bible details God’s eternal purpose, God’s scheme of redemption from Genesis forward
Aim of class:
To see that redemption is God’s eternal purpose and it unfolds in the pages of the bible
That the scheme of redemption is concerned with saving the sinful, fallen man through the Redeemer Christ on the cross
Outline:
A. Redemption is the work of God’s eternal purpose throughout human history.
Crucifixion is historical (Eph1:3-11)
Ephesians 1:3–11 NASB95
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him 10 with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,
This is God’s redeeming act
Salvation made available to all men
Man fell away from God and redemption is needed. (Rom3:10-11, 23; 1Cor15:22)
Romans 3:10–11 NASB95
10 as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; 11 There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God;
Romans 3:23 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
The fall (Gen3) (Summarize this)
The temptation (3:1-5)
Being deceived (3:6)
The results (3:9-24)
B. Redemption is God’s plan seen in both the Old covenant and the new covenant.
Old Covenant shows
Man’s sinless state before the fall
The fall and the separation
Man’s inability to save himself
Man’s need for a redeemer
New Covenant shows
God’s provision for man’s sin problem.
Christ and His church (we will be focusing on Ephesians/Colossians)
Jesus is the only way (Jn14:6, Jn1:1-18; Act4:12)
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
John 1:1–3 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
John 1:14–18 NASB95
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ ” 16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
The Old covenant and the New covenant are inseparable in the historical unfolding of God’s eternal purpose/God’s scheme of redemption
Central theme of Bible is redemption of sinful man to Holy God
God’s eternal plan is revealed in history reconciling sinful man back to Himself
The bible events are supernatural and providential acts of God in history
Preservation of Noah
Preservation of the seed line promise from Abraham to Jesus (Mt1:1)
Preserving it during captivity in Babylon
Preserving Jesus death as infant from Herod
Preserving the crucified Jesus Christ as the Risen Savior!
Conclusion
God’s plan was predetermined (Eph1:3-12)
It was with foreknowledge (1Pt1:2; Act2:22-24) also consider (Col1)
God’s plan was not left in the hands of chance, to evolution or the like. This was a predetermined plan by the Creator of all things, the one true, living and eternal God.
Man’s efforts, strengths weaknesses has not nor will not hinder God’s eternal plan of redemption
Satan cannot hinder it either!
God is all knowing and according to scripture rules in the patterns of man (Dan2:21, Col1:16; Rev17:14)
