Benefits of Believing (Romans 5:1-5)
Benefits of Believing (Romans 5:1-5)
INTRO: We are going to talk about some of the benefits of believing in Jesus Christ. We are going to be in the book of Romans, whom Paul wrote to mostly the gentiles (us) in the early AD 50’s with the Jewish people being the minority. Tonight we are going to see some of the benefits of faith in Jesus.
What does it mean to be justified?
Being justified, is when God simply looks at us, and see’s His Son, Jesus’s blood covering us because of our faith in Jesus alone. Not by our works but by faith in Him alone we may be considered righteous.
So what does faith mean?
Its more than just believing without seeing, its also putting our trust in Him.
READ VERSES 1-5
VERSE 1
Romans 5:1 (NASB95)
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
The first two benefits we see here is Justification and Peace with GOD
The peace we see here is not the same peace we see Paul write in Phil. 4:7, here we are talking about peace with God, and what we see in Phil 4:7 is God’s peace to help us. Peace with God, is us being forgiven, justified and reconciled with Him. But first we need to look at this verse to see how Peace with God can be obtained.
FAITH IN JESUS, means to simply believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, to put our trust in Him and Him alone.
JUSTIFIED, it is by Faith that we are Justified and with justification we are in the sight of God made righteous, we no longer are separated from God but are reconciled with Him even though we are sinful and fall short of the Glory of God every single day.
Is does not matter what you have done in the past, Faith alone in Jesus leads to Justification, and Justification leads to Peace with God.
Life can be full of stress, there is going to be times when we have fear, there are going to be times where we do have worry, and anxiety may grab the steering wheel, we may not wanna wake up and go about the day because of depression, and we may even have confusion. Being a Christian is not always going to be easy, BUT, we have peace with GOD.............
In fact we can read in John 10:10, JESUS says: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I (Jesus) came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Because when we are justified and have peace with God, we no longer have God’s wrath upon us, which is eternity in hell. It is BY FAITH in Jesus Christ that we are justified and we have peace with GOD.
VERSE 2
Romans 5:2 (NASB95)
through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.
The 3rd and 4th benefit we see here is God’s Grace and Hope
(GRACE)
There is nothing we can do ourselves manually to stand before God and receive His Grace. The word “introduction” means access. We now have access to God’s Grace by faith in Jesus. Why is God’s Grace important? Well for one, we deserve nothing but to be in hell. God’s Grace is when He freely gives us things we do not deserve. The greatest of these is Jesus Christ.
IT IS BY HIS GRACE THAT WE
Are in His favor
Receive His blessings
His Love
His promises
AND SALVATION
It is through Jesus that we have access to His grace.
We can see God’s grace throughout the bible. His promises, His words, His covenants, all spring from His grace.
God’s Grace is not only seen in the beginning of our salvation but throughout our Christian life. God knows that without His Son Jesus, we cannot obey the Law, so faith in Jesus, not only gives us peace with God but we receive God’s grace. Hebrews 13:8, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. So if you recieved God’s Grace yesterday, you will have it today, and you will have it forever. It is by faith in Jesus, and God’s grace that you may have eternal life. Standing in God’s grace assures us that we are favored in His sight.
(HOPE)
Having faith in Jesus Christ gives us HOPE, in the New Testament we see the word hope as in we are to trust in God’s sovereignty. The best way I can explain hope, is that we do not say “hopefully” we will be ok. We can look at hope as in what the world has to offer, but we are not called to chase after worldly things. We don’t say I am “hopeful” for this outcome, instead “hope” in the Glory of God is I trust in God, I am confident in Him, I can rest assure that God knows whats best for me. To dwell in Him
We rejoice in hope of the glory of God, lets look at glory and what it means. Glory here is talking about God’s power, light, and sovereignty. So we rejoice in HOPE (to rest assure, to have confidence) of the GLORY of God.
VERSE 3-5
And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;
and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;
and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
The last benefit is we can have joy in our tribulations
These last three verses tells us not to worry about tribulations, instead, to rejoice in them. Tribulation is when a child of God goes through a period of suffering which can be either mental or physical or both........
Notice how I said a child of God????? An unbeliever who is lost, confused, hurting, are going to constantly live in tribulations. A child of God, who is favored in His eyes because of their faith in Jesus, experiences something the world cannot offer, and thats hope, and hope does not disappoint. Remember when we talked about HOPE, and that is to rest assure, be confident, and trust. So we rest assure that God’s love has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
So when we face tribulations, we can rejoice, knowing that it is in those tough times that we are not alone. It says in those times it builds us up, I can’t begin to tell you of how many times I went through tribulations, and each and every time, I thank God. Because it was in those moments, down in the valleys, that I went to God for EVERYTHING, we should always go to God rather we are in tribulations or not. But God knows that we will go through them, that is why He sent Jesus, Jesus himself went through it, it happened to Him before the cross and while on the cross. When we are truly justified, we are no longer held captive by the enemy. We no longer live in bondage with the world.
It is when we face times that we do not want to face we can know that from previous trials and seasons that God got us through them and that our trust in Him continues to grow.
