And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
Intro: When we consider the title given to Christ as the, Son of man, let it not confuse us. In our finite mind it sometimes seems as though His name, the Son of man takes away from His name, the Son of God. We are sometimes confused because the two names seem to contradict one another because when we hear the name Son of God it sounds a whole lot like He is God, and when we hear His name, the Son of man it sounds a whole lot like He is man. What is important us all to understand is that to the Jews the name, the Son of man would have carried with it great significance. Centuries before the coming of Christ the prophet Daniel had given a very famous prophecy concerning the Messiah and His coming in flesh. In this verse He is called ___________________________.
I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
To the Jews His title, the Son of man wasn’t denying His deity, it was actually affirming it.
The name, the Son of man is the most commonly used name for Christ in the gospel accounts and it is the most frequent name used by Christ Himself, for Himself.
The two ways in which John bares record of Him here in Revelation 1 is as the __________________ and as the Son of man. It is the same way that the Holy Spirit had John bear record in the gospel of John.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Christ is here being presented as the Word. As God speaks what comes out, what we hear is a voice. That Voice or Word is none other than Jesus Christ.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
That Word being made flesh - signifies the eternal Word of God becoming a man.
The Location:
Where is it that John sees Christ in the Revelation 1:12-13? He is in the midst of seven______________________. What are the seven candlesticks? Let me tell you what I think… It doesn’t matter what I think because the Bible tells us in vs. 20. Before we look there let me just say, that remember that there is very little symbolism in the Bible, especially in the book of Revelation that is not defined either within the passage itself or somewhere in the Scripture. It just takes comparing spiritual with that which are spiritual. They are the seven candlesticks are the seven __________________. (20)
Remember the reason for His giving us the Revelation is “to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass...” (vs. 1)
The seven churches are to whom the Revelation is addressed! (vs. 11)
Notice: Jesus is in the midst of the seven churches. Today you will find Jesus today in the middle of His church! He is absolutely in glory, sitting upon His throne in heaven and yet at the same time, He is in the midst of His church!
Here is the challenge however. This is not something we can assume. Notice Revelation 3:18 that Jesus said “I stand at the door and ____________. This is the period of time that we are in, and in reality so many today will gather and assume that Jesus is in their midst when in reality He is standing on the outside looking in, knocking on the door, just waiting for someone inside to recognize that He isn’t here. We cannot assume that there is a sign that by the road that signify’s a church, that doesn’t mean that there is a church meeting, and that Jesus is in the midst of it.
Jesus tells us those churches that He will be in the midst of:
Those that keep the Mission -
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Those that keep attention to purity - (We are His body, and we are His bride… Can you imagine the Lord Jesus our living head and husband being connected to a vile body or bride?)
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Matthew 18:15-20 This passage is talking about trespass, one against another. This trespass is against the church. Why? Because the church is Christ’s, it is pure and is to be presented without spot or wrinkle. However the trespass makes it have spot… The context of Matthew 18 is _____________________. (vs. 20) Is one of the verses that is most frequently taken out of context. It isn't about how many are gathered together because that would signify that when I pray, when I spend time with Him alone, He isn’t there. The context of (vs. 20) is found in (vs. 16). The two or three that are gathered in (vs. 20) are the same people two or more from (vs. 16) He is talking here about us, the church, that is so passionately and in love with Jesus that we want to see that the reason that He died was to purchase a bride that was holy and pure and we care enough about Him, to do what He said to do! Jesus said when we carry out that mission that He will be with us all the way to the end of the ages!
It isn’t easy… But think about it, Jesus is promising His personal presence, when we seek to carry out the mission, and the purity of His body and His bride. I want to go to a church that Jesus attends. I don’t want to go to church that He is outside knocking while we are inside celebrating and having a good old time… That is Lao
He will be part, when we do what He says. That we love Him enough to tell people that they can be apart of His kingdom, and love Him enough for those who call l themselves brother’s and sisters, to call back one, who has made a trespass, so that they may return to being all that He intended them to be in Him!
Revelation 1:10 John hears the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ. In verse 12 he turns and sees the Lord Jesus in the midst of His churches, shinning His light in and through them to light this dark world. Then in the middle of verse 13 John begins to describe Him, the Lord Jesus Christ in glory, and He begins by describing the clothing of His person. This will be the focus of our study beginning next week.
