Themes: Idolatry/judgement with fire/judgement by losing the presence of God/glory/cherubim
Preface
What is going on with Israel, where is God?
Over 5,000 dead between Palestinian and Israeli / more than 200 abducted and war atrocities that are beyond unspeakable
INTRODUCTION
Palestine
Psalm 94 | 1 O Yahweh, God of vengeance, God of vengeance, shine forth! 2 Be lifted up, O Judge of the earth, Render recompense to the proud. 3 How long shall the wicked, O Yahweh, How long shall the wicked exult? 4 They pour forth words, they speak arrogantly; All workers of iniquity vaunt themselves. 5 They crush Your people, O Yahweh, And afflict Your inheritance. 6 They slay the widow and the sojourner And murder the orphans. 7 They have said, “Yah does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob discern.”
Israeli’s/
8 Discern, you senseless among the people; And when will you have insight, you fools? 9 He who planted the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see? 10 He who disciplines the nations, will He not rebuke, Even He who teaches man knowledge? 11 Yahweh knows the thoughts of man, That they are vanity.
Future
12 Blessed is the man whom You discipline, O Yah, And whom You teach out of Your law; 13 That You may grant him calm from the days of calamity, Until a pit is dug for the wicked. 14 For Yahweh will not abandon His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance.
take it to the bank that Yahweh will never ever abandon His people entirely Jeremiah 33:25–26 ““Thus says Yahweh, ‘If My covenant for day and night stand not, and the statutes for heaven and earth I have not established, then I would reject the seed of Jacob and David My servant, not taking from his seed rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But I will return their fortunes and will have compassion on them.’””
But right now they are suffering for their unbelief in Jesus Christ.
MAINPOINT
Psalm 94:14 “For Yahweh will not abandon His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance.”
Yahweh, will never utterly leave His people or the Land. He has tied Himself, His character to His faithfulness to Israel and He will Himself fulfill it but there is a barrier right now because they have not accepted Jesus as Christ. Isaiah 6:9–12 “He said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; Keep on seeing, but do not know.’ “Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their eyes dim, Lest they see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their hearts, And return and be healed.” Then I said, “Lord, how long?” And He said, “Until cities are devastated and without inhabitant, Houses are without people, And the land is devastated to desolation, And Yahweh has removed men far away, And the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.”

CONTEXT
Ezekiel (God Strengthens), exiled in 597BC (8yrs after Daniel)
It is approximately 592BC In Babylon and Ezekiel is seeing a vision not of Babylon but of his homeland of Judah, and Jerusalem.
Idolatry Ezekiel 23:36–39 “Moreover, Yahweh said to me, “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations. “For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. Thus they have committed adultery with their idols and even caused their sons, whom they bore to Me, to pass through the fire to them as food. “Again, they have done this to Me: they have defiled My sanctuary on the same day and have profaned My sabbaths. “For when they had slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered My sanctuary on the same day to profane it; and behold, thus they did within My house.”
The status of abortion in Israel is approximately 20K per year (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_Israel) - total estimated Abortions in Israel since its inception are 800K
There are an estimated 14K prostitutes with brothel visits estimated to be up to 1M per month (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Israel)
Today we are getting a biblical understanding of what God is doing in Israel right now. Psalm 94:14 “For Yahweh will not abandon His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance.” Despite what the news reporters might say Yahweh has not utterly abandoned His people but there is a separation because they have rejected relationship with God.
SERMON
I. The Fearsome Judgement by Fire (v1-2)
Ezekiel 10:1–2 “Then I looked, and behold, in the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a sapphire stone, in appearance in the likeness of a throne, appeared above them. And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Enter between the whirling wheels under the cherubim and fill your hands with coals of fire from between the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And he entered in my sight.”
Jerusalem’s cleansing
Jerusalem is to be purified with fire as God cleanses away the idolatry and immorality. In this vision Ezekiel hears God speak to His servants regarding the means by which that cleansing will take place. This was fulfilled approximately 6 years later when God sent Nebuchadnezzar against Jerusalem in 586BC (2 Kings 25:8–11)
Clarifications on Cherubim
They have 4 wings and 4 faces Ezekiel 1:6 They are full of eyes Rev 4.6 They sparkle like burnished bronze, have human hands and straight legs, feet like a calf Ezekiel 1:7 Their appearance is like burning coal Ezekiel 1:13 Their speed has the appearance like lightning Ezekiel 1:14 They are associated with guardianship, fire, the throne of God Ezekiel 1:15
II. The Going Forth of the Glory of God (v3-5)
Ezekiel 10:3–5 “Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the house when the man entered, and the cloud filled the inner court. Then the glory of Yahweh rose up from the cherub to the threshold of the house, and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of Yahweh. Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks.”
From the beginning Genesis 3:24 “So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.”
During the Tabernacle dedication Exodus 40:34–35 “Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had dwelt on it, and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle.”
During the Theft of the Ark 1 Samuel 4:21–22 “And she called the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and her husband. And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God was taken.””
Shiloh destroyed Jeremiah 7:11–13 ““Has this house, which is called by My name, become a robbers’ den in your sight? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” declares Yahweh. “But go now to My place which was in Shiloh, where I made My name dwell at the first, and see what I did to it because of the evil of My people Israel. “And now, because you have done all these works,” declares Yahweh, “and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I called you but you did not answer,”
Solomon’s Temple Dedication 2 Chronicles 5:13–14 “in unison when the trumpeters and the singers were to make themselves heard with one voice to praise and to give thanks to Yahweh, and when they lifted up their voice accompanied by trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and when they praised Yahweh saying, “He indeed is good for His lovingkindness endures forever,” then the house, the house of Yahweh, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of Yahweh filled the house of God.”
The Temple Vacated Ezekiel 10:19 “When the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the house of Yahweh, and the glory of the God of Israel hovered over them.” (NOTE THAT THE COVENANT TITLE OF GOD OF ISRAEL IS STILL PRESENT - HE MAY HAVE LEFT THE DESECRATED AND DEFILED TEMPLE MOUNT BUT HE HAS NOT ABANDONED HIS INHERITANCE) Ezekiel 11:22–23 “Then the cherubim lifted up their wings with the wheels beside them, and the glory of the God of Israel hovered over them. The glory of Yahweh went up from the midst of the city and stood over the mountain which is east of the city.”
APPLICATION: So What? Aside from giving us a biblical perspective on the
Don’t be blinded by pride Romans 11:25–26 “For I do not want you, brothers, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, “THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.””
Pray for peace Psalm 122:6 “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you.”
Pray for the return of Yahweh 2 Peter 3:12 “looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens burning will be destroyed, and the elements will melt with intense heat!”
Matthew 23:39 ““For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!’””
Zechariah 13:6 ““And one will say to him, ‘What are these wounds struck here between your arms?’ Then he will say, ‘Those with which I was struck in the house of my friends.’”
CONCLUSION: So what is going to happen in the future - what can we expect
Ezekiel 43:1–5 “Then he led me to the gate, the gate facing toward the east; and behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east. And His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory. And it was like the appearance of the vision which I saw, like the vision which I saw when He came to bring the city to ruin. And the visions were like the vision which I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell on my face. And the glory of Yahweh came into the house by the way of the gate facing toward the east. And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of Yahweh filled the house.”
Ezekiel 48:35 ““The city shall be 18,000 cubits round about; and the name of the city from that day shall be, ‘Yahweh is there.’””

INTRODUCTION
Clarification: Who I am not speaking to You need to know this up front, today’s message is for those people who call themselves Christians but are not. They only think they are. This message is not for those whose hearts beat for Christ. This message is not for those who have begged God out of their incredible moral bankruptcy for His mercy and opened every chamber of their heart up to Him for His mastery of their life. This message is not for those who possess the Holy Spirit and are reminded through Him that they can call God their own Father… This message is not for the elect, the called, the chosen, the Church of God, rather...
Clarification: Who I am speaking to This message is for the deluded - those that name the name of Christ but have never repented from the heart for their offenses against God. This message is for hearers of the Word but not the doers of the Word. This message is for those who like Judas have gotten incredibly close to Jesus, seen His power, eaten with Him, listened to His Word, but yet have other gods they serve. This message is for those on the edge of eternity unharnessed to Cross of Christ.
Why? We need to know this from the outset because this distinction is critical to make in the passage that we are studying in Ezekiel 10.
Let me ask you, my dearly deluded friend…
Dearly Deluded you are in danger
In Genesis 3 we see God forcing our parents out of the garden, eliminating their ability to enter by the guardians He placed there with flaming swords.
What if there is no peace in our heart because we do not know the Prince of Peace?
What if there is no understanding rooted in faith?
What if a deluding influence has beguiled us into thinking that we are indeed saved when we are not.
What if we are terrified of the fire of judgment but do not have a reverence for the the Lord
What is the danger of idolatry? What is man’s greatest need
Genesis 3:24 “So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.”

I. The Fearsome Judgment by Fire (v1-2)
Ezekiel 10 | 1 Then I looked, and behold, in the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a sapphire stone, in appearance in the likeness of a throne, appeared above them. 2 And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Enter between the whirling wheels under the cherubim and fill your hands with coals of fire from between the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And he entered in my sight.
II. From the Ark to the Threshold (v3-5)
3 Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the house when the man entered, and the cloud filled the inner court. 4 Then the glory of Yahweh rose up from the cherub to the threshold of the house, and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of Yahweh. 5 Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks.
III. Judgment Effected (v6-8)
6 Now it happened that when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” he entered and stood beside a wheel. 7 Then the cherub sent forth his hand from between the cherubim to the fire which was between the cherubim, took some up, and put it into the hands of the one clothed in linen, who took it and went out. 8 And the cherubim appeared to have the form of a man’s hand under their wings.

IV. Obedient Servants (v9-14)
9 Then I looked, and behold, four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of a Tarshish stone. 10 As for their appearance, all four of them had the same likeness, as if one wheel were within another wheel. 11 As they went, they went in any of their four directions without turning as they went; but they went in the direction which they faced, without turning as they went. 12 And their whole body, their backs, their hands, their wings, and the wheels were full of eyes all around, the wheels belonging to all four of them. 13 The wheels were called in my hearing, the whirling wheels. 14 And each one had four faces. The first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

V. Description Of The Departure (v15-17)
15 Then the cherubim rose up. They are the living creatures that I saw by the river Chebar. 16 Now as the cherubim went, the wheels went beside them; also when the cherubim lifted up their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels would not turn from beside them. 17 When the cherubim stood still, the wheels would stand still; and when they rose up, the wheels would rise with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in them.
VI. From the Threshold to the Gate (v18-19)
18 Then the glory of Yahweh departed from the threshold of the house and stood over the cherubim. 19 When the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the house of Yahweh, and the glory of the God of Israel hovered over them.
VII. Affirming The Testimony (v20-22)
20 These are the living creatures that I saw beneath the God of Israel by the river Chebar; so I knew that they were cherubim. 21 Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and beneath their wings was the likeness of human hands. 22 As for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the river Chebar. Each one went straight ahead.

CONCLUSION
Colossians 1:12–18 “giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. Who rescued us from the authority of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, And in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church; Who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.”
2 Thessalonians 1:5–12 | 5 This is a plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering. 6 Since it is right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to give rest to you who are afflicted and to us as well at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 executing vengeance on those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, AWAY FROM THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD AND FROM THE GLORY OF HIS MIGHT, 10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—for our witness to you was believed. 11 To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill all your good pleasure for goodness and the work of faith with power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Compassionate Questions:
1) What are you worshipping?
2) Whose glory are you seeking?
3)
Does God’s glory mean anything to you? Or is your own glory more important?
2) Does God’s presence mean anything to you?
3) Do
What if the quiet - the lack of God’s presence, that hollow emptiness isn’t a season, a momentary trial, but is a longstanding evidence of, a symptom of the judgment to come, a sign indicating deep seated rebellion and hostility against your Creator?
2) What if the emotionalism and the euphoria of religiosity becomes an unrepeatable event because the reality is that we are separated from God and do not know Him no nor serve Him.
What if the glory of God means nothing to us? Does the glory of God, His praise in our every day life, mean anything to us at all? His magnification, His exaltation, His kingdom His glory - does it mean anything at all to us?
3) What if idolatry has entirely captivated our heart so that we do not seek after God?
Hebrews 6 “Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of teaching about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. And this we will do, if God permits. For in the case of those once having been enlightened and having tasted of the heavenly gift and having become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and having tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and having fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is unfit and close to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. But we are convinced about you, beloved, …”
