Introduction
When we look at the the 6th day of creation God looks at everything he had created and saw that it was very good. Sin had not marred the creation that God made and it was perfect.
As we move on to the second major event of the Old Testament the fall of all mankind, we see the introduction of the serpent. The serpent was controlled by Satan who fell from heaven.
Rev. 12:9 “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
Rev 20:2 “And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,”
Satan was created as the highest of all the angels, the anointed cherub covering the very throne of God.
Ezek 28:14-15 “Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.”
When iniquity was found in this perfect being - evidently the sin of rebellion against God - he who had been Lucifer (“light bearer”) became Satan (“The Adversary”), and has remained God’s greatest foe ever since.
As an angel he was created to be a ministering spirit, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation. (Hebrew 1:14)
Satan led 1/3 of the angels to rebel against God
Rev 12:4 “And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.”
God cast Satan out of heaven
Eze 28:17 “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.”
As we keep in mind who satan is I want us to look at the deception of Eve, the reaction of Adam.
The deception of Adam and Eve vs 1-8
The deception of Adam and Eve vs 1-8
The Serpent introduced vs. 1
More subtil than any beast of the field
Subtil- Clever
Satan came and took over the body of a serpent. The word subtil here could mean a shining upright creature.
The serpent would have caught the eye of eve, isn’t it amazing how the devil still packages sin in an appealing way?
The seed of doubt vs. 1 Yea, hath God said...
Notice the first thing Satan did was cause Eve to doubt God’s word.
Henry Morris said this “The root of all sin is doubting God’s word”
Satan used this approach successfully even with one who had never sinned before and didn’t have a sin nature inclining her to sin. Satan is still using this tactic today.
2 Cor. 11:3 “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”
Eve’s adding and taking away from Gods word vs. 2-3
In verse 2 she takes away what God had told Adam in Genesis 2:16 “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
She took away the freedom that God had given them in the Garden.
In verse 3 she adds that they aren’t supposed to touch it. That isn’t what God told them
Gen 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
Revelation 22:18-19 God warns us about adding or taking away from the word of God
Here Eve did both, and Satan is going to use it against her.
Satan uses the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life to deceive Eve. vs. 4-6
Notice again how Satan puts a seed of doubt in Eve’s mind vs. 4
He then goes for pride vs. 5
He tells her you won’t die, but you will become as gods knowing good and evil.
Before this Adam and eve hadn’t even heard the word evil, let alone knew what evil was. Remember after creation God saw that everything was very good, there was no evil.
Satan had already tried to become a god
Is 14:13-14 “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”
The most dangerous lie is that which is closest to the truth
By eating the fruit Adam and Eve would now know good and evil, but not as gods, but as sinners
After pride he goes the lust of the flesh vs. 6
Eve had access to every tree of the garden, God told them they could freely eat of every tree except one, they could get there fill on any tree, but the one they wanted the most was off limits.
I wonder of Adam and Eve even thought about what they couldn’t have before Satan brought it to their attention.
Why are we the same way?
ex. put a cookie in front of a toddler and tell him not to touch it.
After the lust of the flesh he used the lust of the eyes vs. 6
As she kept looking on the tree the more pleasant the forbidden fruit got, and eventually she took a bite.
As she ate the fruit, she gave the fruit to her husband and he took a bite as well.
Eve was deceived but Adam willfully ate the fruit he was forbidden to eat.
As soon as they had both eaten of the fruit the Bible says their eyes were opened, there eyes went from seeing only good to now seeing good and evil.
They noticed they were naked, which hadn’t been a problem before they ate of the fruit
Gen 2:25 “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”
They made themselves clothes out of fig leaves
They might have hidden their nakedness from each other but they couldn’t hide their sin from God
As they were sewing up their covering God made his daily rounds through the garden.
As Adam and Eve heard God walking through the garden they hid themselves from the presence of God.
In reality they could run but they couldn’t hide from the presence of God.
Think about Jonah, he ran from the presence of the Lord, but God was their with him
Our kids, when they make a mess in their diaper they run and hide.
The reaction of Adam vs. 9-13
The reaction of Adam vs. 9-13
God calls out to Adam asking where he is vs 9
I’m sure that before their sin Adam and eve looked forward to the presence of God in the Garden.
Adam incriminates himself vs 10
Adam tells God the reasons for me hiding were
I was afraid
I was naked
Therefore I hid myself
Remember they were created naked, and they weren’t ashamed, and now they were afraid because they were naked.
Gods questions for Adam.
Who told you that you were naked?
Did you eat of the tree that I commanded you not too?
Adams answer
The woman
Thou gavest me
She gave me the fruit to eat
God’s question for Eve
What did you do
Eves answer
The serpent beguiled me and I did eat
Beguiled- Deluded; imposed on; misled by craft;
Conclusion
Conclusion
Man had broken fellowship with God, but thankfully thats not the end of the story and God had a plan.
