The life of the Christians starts with regeneration.
Theres no Christian life without regeneration.
“Regeneration is the divine action by which God renews the fallen creation so that it reflects His character.”
Divine action- that means its a work of God.
renews the fallen- thats means something broken needs to be restored.
Its not like you’ve taken a knee but you can somehow pick yourself up, its your like the old lady on life alert. “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”
To ultimately it can reflect His character! Regeneration should lead to a life that exemplifies Christ.
The new nature is pattern after God HImself.
This new nature longs after qualities from God.
7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
Some translations say “You must be born from above.”
“It has been said that the central message of evangelism must be the command, addressed to the unsaved, that they be born again. As a matter of fact, the Bible contains no such command. The Lord’s statement to Nicodemus, ‘Ye must be born again’ (John 3:7), was an indicative, not an imperative. Jesus spoke of the new birth as an indispensable experience, yet not as a duty to be performed.”
Being born again is a reality its not a duty that you can perform.
Because its a work of the Holy Spirit.
The word regeneration is only mentioned twice in the Bible . Matt 19:28 speaks about the renewal of the earth during the millial reign.
Matthew 19:28 (NKJV)
28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Peter asked Jesus this question, “See We have left all and followed you, what shall we have?”
The rich young ruler refused to sale all that he had.
Peter was saying the nations rejected you, but we left all and followed you. Now whats in it for us?
So Jesus gave his answer, he spoke about a renewal or a rebirth regeneration of all things . All things will change in the millennial reign. A new heaven and a new earth. A new Jerusalem.
17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.
All things spiritual, all things political, and geographical and physical will be changed. This is regeneration.
1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
the millennial reign is not applicable to Christian salvation.
5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
“This word regeneration express the concept of new life, new birth, spiritual resurrection, the new creation, and in general, a reference to the new supernatural life that believers receive as sons of God.”
Its the origination of eternal life thats comes into the believers life at the point of believing in Christ.
In Titus its clear that this regeneration is a work of God!
Regeneration isn’t works based.
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Regeneration is a creative act of God.
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Pauls life went from being a persecutor of Christ to a proclaimer of Christ! This is what regeneration looks like!
To be in creation is to be a new creation!
The new life of devotion to Christ means that one has new attitudes and actions
14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died;
15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.
Eternal life is imparted by regeneration!
5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
“The theological danger attending Pentecostalism and Neo-Pentecostalism is that it shifts the emphasis from new birth to Spirit-baptism, from the first to a second crisis experience. In consequence, “the doctrine of justification is emptied of meaning and reduced to a preliminary stage for beginners in Christianity.”
