THE HELP WE NEED, EXODUS 17:12

Psalm 16:8 NKJV
I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.

Introduction

I do not understand why people do like to ask for help. Is it embarrasment, is it a ego or pride.
In my younger days it was ego for me with a little embarrasment. I am a big man, strong, smart....I know can handle this, fix this or figure a way out of it....
In the end I did more harm than good....
We all need help at some point in our lives…you do not have to be old or sick to need help…for some things, additional help is required.
And it is ok to ask for help. That doesn’t make you less of anything…it actually makes you smarter....
Even King Solomon, considered the wisest King ever…even asked for help....God told Solomon, he could have what ever he wanted and God would grant it....Solomon didn’t ask for fortune or fame, Solomon asked for help in ruling over God’s people..... 1 Kings 3:9 “Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?””
As we are about to see here in a few moments the reason why it is ok to ask for help....
we need to make sure we know who to ask for help
and lastly we need to know that He will send the help we need....
Let’s walk thru the text....
The Israelites have come out of bondage.
On their journey to the promised land
The people are camped by Rephidim and there is no water and now they are talking against Moses and Moses hits the rock and water comes out and the people drink....verses 1-7
they have had a rough journey but things are about to get a little worse.....
They get attacked..... Exodus 17:8 “Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.”

Amalek comes out to fight against Israel

Up to this point, Israel had not had to fight; the Lord had fought for them (13:17). But now, the Lord chose to fight through them to overcome the enemy.

Deuteronomy 25:17–19 tells us that the Amalekites pulled a “sneak attack” and came up from the rear.

Some theologians say...
This was an unprovoked attack by the Amalekites against Israel.
The bible doesn’t give a reason why but if i could interject my opinion briefly....
a quick history lesson....

The Amalekites were descendants of Esau

And the Israelites descendants of Israel (Jacob)....TALK, PREACH,.....
Ok back to the lesson....
what this tells us first is that things will pop up in your life, good or bad and unexpectedly.....
And just like the Israelites found out, it can be own family at times.....
We should not be caught off guard, things will pop up....
(talk to candidate for baptism)
Next we need to know where our true help comes from....
Look what Moses say at the end of verse 9
Exodus 17:9 (NKJV)
And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”
Our rod is His holy word....the bible...
but what is interesting here....The Scriptures call this stout stick both the rod of Moses (your rod, Exodus 17:5) and the rod of God. There was the combination of the human instrument and the divine power.
the bible written by man but inspired by God...
God’s word should encourage us and help us realize that our help is near by..
The Teacher’s Bible Commentary Attack from the Amalekites (Ex. 17:8–16)

maybe God’s purpose in human history is not to give us easy blessings, but to give us opportunities to fight for those victories

When God is in the midst, we are on the winning team.....TALK, PREACH....
So now Moses is up on the hill with the rod and scriptures tells us when his arms and the staff was lifted, the Israelites were winning but when the began to fall they were losing.....
Moses had a job to do and it was a struggle.
I can hear the song writer now....Nobody told me that the road would be easy, but I don’t believe he brought me this far to leave me....
Things are gonna pop up but while you are working, you will get tired from time to time.....TALK,PREACH....
But Moses was not up there on his own....
Exodus 17:10 “So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.”
God will always provides the help we need....
look at what they did.....
Exodus 17:12–13 “But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.”
The job of supporting the battle in prayer was difficult and Moses could not easily continue. We might think that fighting was the hard work and praying was the easy work, but true prayer was also hard work.
Church it will come a time that you will need some and believe God will provide....TALK, PREACH...

How did Israel overcome the enemy? They had an intercessor on the mountain and a commander in the valley! Moses’ role on the mountain illustrates the intercessory work of Christ

Moses, the man of God, is glad of help. We should not be shy, either of asking help from others, or of giving help to others. The hands of Moses being thus stayed, were steady till the going down of the sun. It was great encouragement to the people to see Joshua before them in the field of battle, and Moses above them on the hill

Don’t let to much catch you off guard, things will pop up.....TALK
you gonna get tired on this journey....TALK
God will provide the help we need....TALK....
Let me tell you story .....
