Introduction
Will be in 1 Peter 1:14-18 this morning,
Had a lot of unique life experiences
Drove me to really want to understand people.
I love people, and i especially love interesting people. (weird people)
One thing fascinates me - People want to be a “good person”
Apologetics says naturalist view has no reason to be a good person
So they’re borrowing it
Almost like everyone has an “image of God” inside them-makes want to be good
This drives so much of how they think and behave.
Bible says no one is good but God
(references)
19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.
10 as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one;
11 no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
Came across several internet post on the subject.
1. 6 signs you’re actually a better person than you think you are
2. 10 Reasons no one likes you
3. Reddit blog on “is being a good person worth it?”
Maybe a legiitmate question for us to consider
How can I be a good person?
But The bible doesn’t tell us to be a good person.
We do see:
The work of Christ is to make us good and acceptable before God and
to transform our hearts and actions as we pursue a relationship with Him.
and to PUT OFF THE OLD MAN, PUT ON THE NEW MAN.
One of the most distinct commands in scripture is
BE HOLY
Lets look at 1 Peter1:14-19
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
What is holiness? v14-16
What is holiness? v14-16
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
OT meaning - qāḏôš - Strongs 6918 - sacred and set apart
Explain - Not so much a attribute of God, but a state of being that defines the quality and quantity of his attributes
Example: In his sovereignty, he is on another plane in sovereignty, the only true sovereign / In His love, he is on another plane in love.
Sovereignty, righteousness
Close eyes!
In a castle, and youre in the throne room where king is
1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”
4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.
one of the biggest words we get out of this is full
So if the Christian is told to be holy because God is holy, what in the world does that look like?
Is God asking us to be like this image in Isaiah 6?
Peter explains what it is by explaining what its not
We get in in verse 14
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
Conform - comply with the rules or behave according to socially acceptable standards
So What is Holy?
not only Being separated from the things of this world.
Not letting the ignorance of this world control how you think and feel.
Operating on actual truth not feelings.
We are going well beyond behavior here
may not necessarily always make the right decision, but as you spend time in God’s word and walk by the Spirit,
You should be able to distinguish between true and not true good and bad, right and wrong, wise and dumb
because your mind is separated from what the world says is smart and free and good.
Ask yourself, “AM I HOLY?”
Then ask, “DO I GET SUCKERED A LOT BY THE THINGS OF THIS WORLD?”
What is holding you back from holiness?
What is holding you back from holiness?
already determined
Not are you goody-goody, but are you (your life) set apart for God’s purposes?
If not, its because of:
Lack of obedience v14
Maybe you're not saved
Maybe you believe the gospel, but you have never made Jesus Lord of your life (Romans 10:9)
You still let your passions of former ignorance rule you.
This wont go away, no matter how old you get.
You dont turn 40 and all of a sudden it gets easier to control
KILL THE SIN! ROMANS 8:13 (put to death)
Lack of fear v17
Living without shame
You are an exile. Live like it. (if this is it, what does it matter what you do)
Live like you have to go home and see your dad again one day.
My dad to coaches
will spank him too when gets home
no condemnation for those in Christ
But that doesnt mean we dont need to respect God
Your family history rules you v18
God provides everything you need to overcome the past
Didn't use something temporary to purchase you, like gold, he used himself.
On cross, See God Jesus take all of Gods wrath for you and me
So your dads guilt, your dads dad guilt-doesnt apply to you.
NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE IN CHRIST.
