Mark 1
Mark 1
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
This event in the gospel of Mark takes place after Jesus is baptized and tempted. This is the beginning of his ministry and this it the gospel call, repent and believe.
In a quote from Wayne Grudem about conversion he says;
Conversion is our willing response to the gospel call, in which we sincerely repent of sins and place our trust in Christ for salvation.
Wayne Grudem; Paul Tautges
This call that Jesus issues is the same call that we have today, this is the call to salvation and this is all that is required to be saved.
Often in our world salvation is skewed by people thinking that what the Bible says is to simple and there has to be more but this couldn’t be farther from the truth. People try to add certain works or the act of being good to the requirements of getting into heaven. This simply is not what the Bible says, the Bible says to repent and believe in the gospel. It is through faith and repentance that we find conversion and nothing else.
This faith is not alone though because when you truly repent and believe there is a fundamental change about you. We are not saved by works but someone who truly is saved will bear fruit. There will be a change and there will be a desire for service. This desire is comes out of our gratitude for salvation not from necessity. We are thankful for all that he has done and in response we desire to serve him.
Jesus came preaching faith and repentance and his message is still true today. Have you ever put your faith in Jesus and turned away from your sins? If not, why?
