Text: Revelation 1:13
Intro: Last week we established the location of the voice that John hears and then sees. God reveals to John that Jesus is in the midst of the 7 churches that are represented here by the 7 golden candlesticks. Which again the seven golden candlesticks are explained in verse 20 as “…the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.” We see the Lord Jesus there in the midst being light and shining as light so that in Him, they might shine forth as light into a dark world. We talked last week about how we cannot assume that Jesus is in our midst and we looked at those things that He requires of us so that He can be in our midst.
Today we are going to begin to study the Lord Jesus Christ in Glory! The first thing that John describes is His clothing.
Revelation 1:13 KJV 1900
And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
Were not going to take the time here to get into an elaborate study into what He is wearing because of our afternoon study on the Tabernacle. That being said it is still amazing to me that as we study Christ, we begin to see symbols and pictures of Him throughout the scriptures. The clothing that John describes for us here is very similar to that of the Old Testament priest. The clothing isn’t exact which is perfectly okay because the Old Testament priest was only a picture of what was to come.
Hebrews 4:14 KJV 1900
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
The picture that we have in the Old Testament of the high priest is the one that was interceding on behalf of the people.
Hebrews 7:25 KJV 1900
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Understand here, that at the time of Revelation chapter 1 and verse 13 it has been some sixty years since Christ died, was buried, rose again and ascended back to the Father in Glory. When John sees Him for the first time in His glory He sees Him just like this! He sees the Lord Jesus Christ as our High Priest in heaven!
Do you realize here this morning that if we could somehow leave this room and get a glimpse of heaven almost two thousands years after these recording of these events here. Do you know what we would find if you or I were catapulted to heaven right now, we would see the Lord Jesus Christ as our Great High Priest Who ever liveth to make intercession for us!
Hebrews 4:15–16 KJV 1900
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Since we have a Great High Priest who has gone through everything thing that we have gone through because He became a man like you and I and was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin. It is because of this truth that we can come boldly to the throne of grace. I hope we find this as a great encouragement.
That through what God revealed to John, through what God has revealed to us in Hebrews that we have the understanding and that we can see that the Lord Jesus Christ is clothed in priestly garments and He is touched by whatever it is that you are going through and that He is just waiting for you to come to obtain mercy, and to find grace to help in your time of need.
God has revealed Christ to us in His glory so that we may find help! I’m telling you that this study should change our lives. That when we see Christ glorified and we see Him in glory and in power we cannot un-see Him.
It should change our holiness:
1 Peter 1:15 KJV 1900
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
It should change our church:
Ephesians 5:27 KJV 1900
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
It should change our trust:
Hebrews 4:14–16 KJV 1900
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
We can depend upon the One Who has been there, Who has gone through what we are going through, Who has overcome all, and is interceding on our behalf and is offering, mercy, and is offering grace, and is offering help in our time of need. God has revealed Him, so that we might see Him and that we might trust Him as our Great High Priest!
