King James Version (Chapter 32:35)
Their foot shall slide in due time:

1. Down through the entirety of the church age there has been many solid, grounded views that have been presented by preachers and teachers alike.

One of these views was that people have to be brought basically to the end of themselves before they can truly find the beginning of themselves.
Another way of saying this is that people have to realize their great need before they can have their need met.
This is proven even in practical ways.
Example: Calling an ambulance.
Back around the time of what was known as The Great Awakening in North America. There were a few preachers that strongly upheld and presented this very view.
Quote
I guess the conviction of many of the preachers who saw a mighty move of God and revival down through the ages was that yes you need to tell people of the awesome love of God. You need to tell people of the great and glorious grace of God. You need to tell people of His great patience towards them and how His mercy is so abounding. You need to tell people about the perfect plan of God for their lives. But in telling people all of these things you also need tell them of the severity of God. You also tell them of the Holiness of God. You also need to speak to the true condition of humanity as a whole, and then you can truly and rightly lead them to the only remedy for their condition. You need to hold up grace in one hand but in the other hold and present the truth.
And this is so true because because in all honesty if I truly love people, and if I am truly concerned for people and I see them in danger I will tell them and warn them. If I truly want whats best for people. If I truly care for people and their souls. Then with love and grace in my heart I will also tell them the truth of the matter.
I think of my children in this respect.
Example: Children.
If I were to see a man walking on thin ice, if I knew it was thin and I cared I would stop and warn him.
Now all that I just said is fine and dandy in and of itself but the big question I need to ask before we get into our text is simply this. Is this viewpoint scriptural? Can we find this view of the preachers of old, this view of the revivalists and evangelists of days gone by, can we find it interwoven in the very fabrics, the very threads of scripture? And the answer is simply this, “Yes we can!” You see,

2. This idea of the revivalists of old is also a scriptural truth, and therefore applicable to us today!

i. The Garden Of Eden
If I were to take you to the Garden of Eden for instance. You would see that Adam and Eve were not met with the solution until they understood and realized that there was a consequence.
We understand what happened.

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked;

and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

King James Version (Chapter 3)
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. 17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
It was not until they had come to this place that God presented the provsion to them. This is proven because it is in verse 21 after all these events that the scripture says,
King James Version (Chapter 3:21)
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
ii. The Wilderness of Sinai
You see the same kind of situation in the wilderness of Sinai. In the wilderness God leads His people, the Israelites to a mountain which is known as Mount Sinai. And when they come to this mountain look what happens.
King James Version (Exodus 19:2)
Israel camped before the mount.
King James Version (Exodus 19:10-12)
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:
The tabernacle.
I will be your God and you will be My people.
iii. Egypt
Here is why. People in North America are generally secure. Thats not a judgment, thats a reality. You might disagree by saying most people are insecure. There are a lot of peopple that are insecure but when it comes to eternity if people even believe in such a thing many if not most are secure. And their security keeps them in a state of slumber. Therefore they must needs be awoken and aroused from this state of slumber. nd how do you do that. By helping people realize their lack of sucurity spiritually speaking.
This is what the revivalists of old did. They brought people to the realities of Egypt before they brought them to the love and mercy of the Cross. They brought them to the terrors of Mount Sinai before they brought them to the presence of the tabernacle. Mount Sinai. Tell the people not to come near Me! The tabernacle. I am the dwell amongst you God.
It is in light of all of this that I bring you this text tonight.

Their foot shall slide in due time:

I cant say that while smiling tonight. I get no joy in what I am about to say. I get joy in the truth that there is a Savior from what I am about to say and His Name is Jesus. But I get no joy in what I am about to say. But my duty is to protect and guard souls and hopefully convince and win some for the glory of God Almighty.

3. The first thing I will say about our text tonight is that you need to understand its background.

In other words, you need to understand its context. Its true meaning, and what was happening in this wonderful yet serious portion of scripture.
Explain the background
The Israelites wickedness. They were continuing on and going even deeper. Look at what happens.
i. They had fallen into slumber spiritually because they felt secure in their position.
Do you feel secure tonight? Or are you actually concerned about the reality of eternity and your soul?
If you are concerned about your soul and eternity then you are on the right track. But if you are not concerned and you have never come to the Cross of Jesus Christ for forgiveness and salvation then I need to ask you.
What is making you feel secure tonight?
Is your security found in the things that are temporal?
Do you feel secure because you have a bank account?
Do you feel secure because you have a house?
Do you feel secure because you have food to eat and clothes on your back?
Is your security found in the things that are religious?
Do you feel secure because you are trusting in your own works tonight?
Is your security found in relationship?
Is it the relationships of your friends that bring you security?
Is it the relationship you have with your peers in the workplace that brings you security?
Is it the relationship of your spouse that brings you security?
There is only one relationship that can bring you spiritual security and that is the relationship you have with Jesus Christ.
The Israelites had grown secure in thier sin and never realized how insecure they truly were. They had developed a slumbering sense of false security.
ii. There is 2 things that this false security caused the spiritually sleeping Israelites to forget.
a. The first thing they forgot was that God was Holy, Holy, Holy and He was actually keeping a track record of their immoral deeds.
King James Version (Revelation 20:11-13)
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
b. The second thing that this sense of false security caused them to forget was that there was peril and danger all around them. It removed from them the worry and idea that anything serious, anything truly bad could happen at any moment in the spiritual sense.
And so the Lord God Almighty comes along with this scripture.

Their foot shall slide in due time:

iii. The truth was that they had no true security in the spiritual and at any time they could lose everything and most seriously what really matters could be lost.
They were like the man in Jesus’ parable.
King James Version (Luke 12:16-21)
The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night dthy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Explain: The Soul.
Example: My timidity with ice and why.
iv. Not only did this false security cause them to forget these things this false security also caused them to take for granted something.
They took for grangted the grace of God. Common Grace vs. Special Grace
God is holding up every person right now byh His mercy and His grace. But at any moment He could pull back and that is when a person will plummet downwards into the depths of hell.
Notice what our text says.

Their foot shall slide in due time:

Due time.
It is appointed unto man once to die, and then the judgement.
Don’t think for a moment that God takes joy in this happening.
Holding the Bible in the airplane. Worried about the rapture. Seeing all the signs. But when I gave my life to Jesus!

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters,

And he that hath no money;

Come ye, buy, and eat;

Yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

2  Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread?

And your labour for that which satisfieth not?

Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good,

And let your soul delight itself in fatness.

3  Incline your ear, and come unto me:

Hear, and your soul shall live;

And I will make an everlasting covenant with you,

Seek ye the LORD while he may be found,

Call ye upon him while he is near:
