“Lust - More Then Meets The Eye”
Welcome everyone, super super blessed to have you with us this week, means you haven't been scared off yet…(joke)
recap the last couple weeks
pride....
fear....
today is a tough one to talk about....I apologize right upfront if this is awkward for you, but it is something that needs to be addressed
we are talking about lust...
not like the other “monsters” this monster is not hiding under your bed or in your closet…no this monster lets you very well know when it has arrived
lord of the rings battering ram...
can we do this before we began…today we are talking about LUST…can we throw out what we know about lust, or think we know, and i am going to preach to you as though you don’t know and this is your first time hearing about it....why?
greek word for lust is epithymia it is a longing for, a passion for, a desire, to covet, to lust...
in our english language we define it as a very strong sexual desire....
since we are building our knowledge of lust, building our foundation for our knowledge, i want us to go back to the very first time lust shows up on the scene in the bible
lets turn to Gen 3.6
Genesis 3:6 (ESV)
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
Of course, there is nothing inherently wrong with something being pleasing to look at. step outside and youll know the truth to that...
But Genesis 3 is the record of history’s most infamous sin.
So, we may safely conclude that Eve’s longing look upon the fruit in delight was done with a lustful eye.
It was a covetous glance; a longing to have something that was not proper for her to possess.
something i want to point out…adam eve were not made (born) with a sinful nature.... termed “temptation from without”
we however were, coined “temptation from within”
lets look at James 1:14-15
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
remember the greek word here for lust in NT is epithymia - which means, to desire, a passion, to covet, to lust
death not that of a physical death but a spiritual death an eternal death...
epithymia is not always a bad desire is not always bad in fact in 1 Timothy 3.1
The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.
this is a good desire, desiring that of a higher position if you will...
however, more times then not epithymia is used to refer to sinful desire thus translating epithymia as “lust” and “passions,” as well as “desires.”
Lust is the desire for anything that is sinful, such as illicit sex, intoxication, ill-gotten gain, revenge, or anything else that is sinful
Lust may also be applied to the way in which we desire something that is not in and of itself sinful.
In other words, we may lust when we desire a good thing in the wrong way or for the wrong reasons.
It is not sinful to desire a spouse. But it is sinful to desire another person’s spouse.
It is not sinful to desire to be paid rightfully for the job you do. But it is sinful to desire money to satisfy our materialistic appetites or because we crave worldly security.
It is good to rest. But the sin of sloth is what happens when that desire becomes twisted.
You get the picture. Lust is both a desire for the wrong thing and a wrong desire for an otherwise good thing.
Lust, in all of its forms and expressions, is without exception sinful and, therefore, represents a sort of rebellion, a mutiny, against God.
we are building our knowledge of lust here today, thats what we are doing right now
preach it...
we now know what lust is lets go through how it infiltrates and affects our life.....
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
build context of scripture, this is red letter scripture right here yall, this is jesus talking.
Jesus is talking about this issue of money, and wealth. and how the desire of money the “lust” of money is dangerous.
our good friends the pharisees believed that the messiah would materially bless all he loved.
they were intent and happy building treasures here on earth and yet in the scriptures before this jesus says that its not about here on earth its about up in heaven with him...
where your treasures are there your heart is
where the things you consider treasures are, the things you value most, the things you desire the most, the things you covet the things you lust after, there your heart is
and then in 22-23 jesus mentions eyes...
this is why lust is so dangerous it begins with our physical eyes desiring sin which leads to spiritual darkness
talk about perception is reality talk...
chain reaction, our senses dictate our emotions, our emotions make up our perception in any given situation or circumstance and our perception in that moment creates our reality for that moment...
our biggest sense that dictates things is sight...
preach...
refere back to Gen3.6
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
how does lust infiltrate our lives?? through what we allow our selves to see....with our eyes
preach it...
It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful.
talk on this preach it....
look sexual desire is part of lust and again in our defintion of lust its all about a sexual desire and that alone is dangerous trust me, but all of lust is a sin and it begins with our eyes and what we begin to desire....
conclude...
so how to we begin to put a stop to lust in our lives both sexual and non…watch what your watching…pay attention to what your feeding your eyes, and pay attention to what you desire...
look at colossians 3:1-4
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
Set your sight on God, set your mind on God
ill say it again bring the Fear of the Lord back in your life
Whosoever, then, makes himself thus a slave to earthly lusts, cannot be of God.
John Calvin
Preach it
HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER.....
