The Integrity of our God Exodus 12:29-51 Context • The final “strike” has arrived. • Israel has worshipped, enjoyed their Passover meal, applied the blood, and now sits safely under God’s salvation. • In this section, we see how the fulfillment of God’s promise propels the believer into obedient faith. God’s Promises Fulfilled 1. God Keeps His Promises Pharaoh • • • At midnight (29) – see Exodus 11:4 The LORD struck (30) – see Exodus 4:23 He summoned Moses (31) – see Exodus 11:8 2. God Keeps His Promises to Israel • • • The Egyptians “were urgent” (33) – “they were overpowering to send them away …”; see Exodus 11:8 Unleavened Bread (34) – see Exodus 12:17 They plundered (35-36) – strong word, literally “to strip off”; see Exodus 11:3 God’s Promises Fulfilled 3. God Keeps His Promises Abraham • • • • 430 years (40-41) – see Genesis 15:13 Bless me (32) – see Genesis 12:3 A mixed multitude (38) – see Genesis 12:3 600,000 Men – for census numbers, see Numbers 2:32, 26:51); for promise to Abraham, see Genesis 22:17 4. God Keeps His Promises to Moses • • Pharaoh summoned Moses (32) – see Exodus 4:16 All went out (41) – see Exodus 3:10 God Leads His Redeemed 1. God led Israel from Ramses to Succoth • • • Archeology is unsure of the exact locations but can guess the vicinity. Succoth was south/southeast of Ramses (the Holy Land is east/northeast). The Israelites roughly follow the shore of the Gulf of Suez. Many believe Succoth was home to Egyptian-held mines where Hebrew slaves needed to be retrieved. Later, God will tell us why He chose the indirect route (see Exodus 13:17-18) God Leads His Redeemed 2. God gives further Passover instructions. • • • The Passover meal was to form a national identity: no foreigners and total participation. Foreigners could eat the meal if they took Israel’s national identity. The Passover lamb was not to be dissected nor broken. Whole lambs were taken into home for multiple families (if necessary). Applications • God has taken great pains to fulfill His word so that we will have the faith to move forward. • Oftentimes, God’s commands cut across our culture, instincts, or desires (see Proverbs 14:12). • Sometimes God’s leading takes us in a curious (or even painful) direction (see Mark 6:45).
