15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,
16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
In Vs. 14 Paul said Awake! you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.
Paul wrote this epistle almost 2000 years ago and he tells the Ephesians that the days are evil. If the days were evil then how much more relevant in this message today.
Paul urges Christians to wake up! It’s time to rise up to the light of Christ to the truth.
We can not afford to be foolish we can no longer waist time living ungodly.
We must redeem the time because the days are evil.
Last week we saw that we redeem the time by being filled with the Spirit.
Paul contrasted being filled with the Spirit with being drunk with wine. He says don’t be drunk with wine which is dissipation (debauchery) but rather be filled with the Spirit. How can a Christian walk carefully if we are drunk how can we be wise? Drunkenness makes us unwise and careless.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink;
5 Lest they drink and forget the law, And pervert the justice of all the afflicted.
Drunkenness causes careless walking. It causes us to be foolish and unwise and it leads to indulgence into other fleshly pleasures and sinfulness. So rather than getting drunk, which is waisting the time at best, Paul tells us to be filled with the Spirit.
We discussed last week that to be filled with the Spirit goes hand in hand with being full of faith. We have the Holy Spirit within us if we are truly Christians.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
So Paul is not saying to believers that they need to get the Spirit but that they must be filled. And we know that the Holy Spirit is not given to un in measures but He is either indwelling us completely or He is not indwelling us at all. So what Paul seems to be saying is that we need to fully experience the Holy Spirit. And the way we experience the Holy Spirit is by faith so as our faith grows we become more filled with the Spirit.
As Christians we have the Holy Spirit in us, that is God dwelling in us. This is a fulfilment of the Tabernacle in the wilderness Tabernacle literally mean dwelling. So the Tabernacle was God dwelling with His people. Not God’s Tabernacle or temple is our bodies.
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Your body is God’s dwelling place. The omnipotent God dwells in you, guides you and shows you the will of God and give you all power to live for Him and to do his will.
So what does it look like when someone is filled with the Holy Spirit?
Singing
Singing
Ephesians 5:19 (NKJV)
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
Being filled with the Spirit causes us to sing
Psalms
Hymns
Spiritual Songs
Or a literal translation would be speaking to yourselves it is probably best translated to one another. But we do sometimes need to speak to ourselves.
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
When we Sing we are not just singing to God we are also singing to each other.
“The Lord bless you and keep you make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you”
When we walk with the Lord in the light of His word what a glory He sheds on our way, While we do His good will He abides with us still and with all who will trust and obey. Trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.
Or in the Psalms
1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
And we also make melody in our hearts to the Lord.
So this is a genuine heart felt singing and it is also to the Lord
So this is a result of being filled with the Spirit and they show a joyful heart. And Joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit.
Another effect of the filling of the Spirit is
Giving Thanks
Giving Thanks
20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing,
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Those who are filled with the Spirit are not complainers. They don’t mummer like the Children of Israel continually did in the wilderness. Always complaining and murmuring. Gratitude is one of the evidences of being filled with the Spirit.
And then finally...
Submitting to One Another
Submitting to One Another
Submitting is a word that most people have negative ideas about.
Paul referred to in
1 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,
2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,
3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
The way of the world is to get ahead exalt yourself, get promoted and have subordinates. But in God’s kingdom it is the reverse. We endeavour to serve one another, humble ourselves and submit to one another.
This was Christ’s example
1 If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy,
2 make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.
4 Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.
5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form,
8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.
This was Christ teaching
42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.
44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
So when Paul says to submit to one another it seems that what he has in mind it to serve the good of others.
As we love them
forgive them
care for them
encourage them
admonish them
teach them.
All of these are ways that we serve and submit to one another.
Now Paul says that we should submit in the fear of God.
What does it mean to fear God?
Should we fear God?
1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.
30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
5 But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”
8 So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.
31 Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.
17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree,
18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.
19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.”
20 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear.
21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.
22 Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.
19 Oh, how great is Your goodness, Which You have laid up for those who fear You, Which You have prepared for those who trust in You In the presence of the sons of men!
20 You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence From the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion From the strife of tongues.
21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
Jesus is our Lord, If he says we should submit to one another and serve one another then if we have any fear of the Lord we must obey Him.
