Love does not look at itself—it is absorbed in the object of its love.
The Love of God, 77
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to be absorbed, captivated, arrested, and utterly focused upon something?
We, at times, can become enamored by something in a moment and then become lost in that which has garnered our attention.
Relatively:
We surrender time to it
We surrender resource
We surrender attention
We surrender devotion
We surrender energies
Yet, before we dive into our text of day…let’s be mindful of the Psalmist in Psalm 73.
Psalm 73:25–26 (ESV)
25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
So I repeat the words of Dr. D Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Love does not look at itself—it is absorbed in the object of its love.
The Love of God, 77
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Let’s Stand and Read the Beautiful Word of our God:
Matthew 22:37–40 ESV
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Jesus came first to the Jew and then the Greek.
So, it is fitting as we grasp our text for this morning…we interpret it with the thought of the Jewish audience to which He spoke.
Our text began as a question from a Pharisee, “a lawyer”
So “a lawyer”, he wishes to know the law.
Jesus answered him in respect to the law and really faith as well.

We Will Have An Object of Adoration.

Man is going to honor something, strive for something, long for something, desire something, love something.
Man must have a God or an idol.
Martin Luther
Our N.T. passage is nothing new.
Jesus knew His audience and desired to show the continuity of the O.T. and N.T.
Jesus quotes straight from the Pentateuch.
Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Matthew 22:37 ESV
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Jesus declares Love the Lord your God.
He further helps us to recognize that He and the Father are One. (The first and second persons of the Trinity.)
John 14:7–9 ESV
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
The recognition of the person of Christ should exhort the believer to Love God.

Why Adore & Love Jesus As God?

First— We are in need and He is the only Satisfaction
The natural view and the: Bible view of man are different: the natural point of view is that man is a great being in the making, his achievements are a wonderful promise of what he is going to be; the Bible point of view is that man is a magnificent ruin of what God designed him to be.
Oswald Chambers
John 1:16 ESV
16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
Remember in our series… we have pointed to our need for a Savior in 4 messages & we have pointed to the Grace through Faith that has saved us.
Here we understand that the fullness of Jesus is what brings us “grace upon grace.”
We are saved in Him, through Him, By Him, and For Him.
Man’s dignity is derived and dependent, not intrinsic.
R. C. Sproul
You see the intrinsic value is in Christ Alone and our dignity is dependent upon and derived from Him.
Second— We Are Commanded to Love God & Others!
Matthew 22:37 (ESV)
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
With the fullness of our being.
Matthew 22:39 (ESV)
39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
As a response to the love we have been shown.
Matthew 1. True Discipleship versus Harsher Condemnation for the Jewish Leaders (19:1–22:46)

The relationship of all the Old Testament to the double love commandment shows that there is a hierarchy of law that above all requires one’s heart attitude to be correct. If this is absent, obedience to commandments degenerates into mere legalism

The Outflow of Loving & Adoring Jesus Is Revealing An Attitude of Gratitude!

Matthew 22:40 ESV
40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 7:12 ESV
12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Galatians 5:14 ESV
14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
You see here lies the rub...
If we love Jesus, then we love others.
1 John 4:20 (ESV)
20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

Walking Away, But In...

It will be God or an Idol.
Love God,
Love Others.
