The crucifixion of Jesus is depicted midway through the 19th chapter of John.
John 19:23–24 NASB95
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”
Ask for reference to Psalm 22.
Psalm 22:18 (NASB95)
18 They divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.
All four Gospels reference the casting of Lots for Jesus’ Garments.
Matthew 27:46 NASB95
46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Reference to Psalms 22.
Do you get the feeling like we should read Psalm 22?
About Psalms 22. It is a Psalm of David.
As we study the Psalms in general, we are able to look at the theme of David’s songs and connect them with a part of his life.
14 begin with a specific description of what was going on in his life.
Psalm 3 A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absolom his son.
Others, even without the reference you know what’s going on.
Psalm 51- David’s Psalm of repentance after visiting Bathsheba.
Psalm 51:1–3 NASB95
1 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.
With Psalm 22 there is nothing in David’s life that matches up with the description of whats going on.
1000 years before Jesus’ birth.
Psalm 22 NASB95
For the choir director; upon Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David. 1 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. 2 O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest. 3 Yet You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel. 4 In You our fathers trusted; They trusted and You delivered them. 5 To You they cried out and were delivered; In You they trusted and were not disappointed. 6 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. 7 All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, 8 “Commit yourself to the Lord; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.” 9 Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb; You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts. 10 Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb. 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death. 16 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots. 19 But You, O Lord, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword, My only life from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion’s mouth; From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me. 22 I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. 23 You who fear the Lord, praise Him; All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel. 24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard. 25 From You comes my praise in the great assembly; I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him. 26 The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the Lord. Let your heart live forever! 27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, And all the families of the nations will worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s And He rules over the nations. 29 All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive. 30 Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. 31 They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it.

Jesus Forsaken

My God, My God.........
Was Jesus forsaken?
Yes.....
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Romans 8:3 NASB95
3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,
Because Jesus bore that condemnation:
Romans 8:1 NASB95
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
You are Holy.

Reaction of the people

Psalm 22:6–8 NASB95
6 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. 7 All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, 8 “Commit yourself to the Lord; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”
Matthew 27:39–43 NASB95
39 And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
Jews
Psalm 22:12 NASB95
12 Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.
In Amos 4, there is a description of Jewish people as gluttons and oppressors.
Amos 4:1 NASB95
1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who are on the mountain of Samaria, Who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, Who say to your husbands, “Bring now, that we may drink!”
Dogs Surround me......reference to Gentiles.
At the time this Psalm was written was Crucifixion had not been invented.
Psalm 22:16 NASB95
16 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet.
Luke 24:39 NASB95
39 “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
Jesus showing that not only was it Him. That He was physically there, and that He had gone through the Crucifixion.
18. Divided garments.
IT IS NOW THAT I ASK YOU, ARE YOU CONVINCED THAT THE WORDS ATTRIBUTED TO DAVID ARE REALLY THE PROPHETIC WORDS OF JESUS ABOUT HIS CRUCIFIXION?
VERSE 22 WE SEE A CHANGE.
Hebrews 2:11–12 NASB95
11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying, “I will proclaim Your name to My brethren, In the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.”
Psalm 22:30–31 NASB95
30 Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. 31 They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it.
He has performed it.........
John 19:30 NASB95
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
It is finished.
What was finished?
The payment for SIN.
Does that me the payment for everyone’s sin has been paid?
Hebrews 9:22 NASB95
22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
You have to apply the blood.
While in Egypt and God was judging the people and taking the first born of every household, it didn’t matter who was in the house or what they had done. What mattered was have they applied the blood?
Have you applied the blood?
Psalm 22:27–29 NASB95
27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, And all the families of the nations will worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s And He rules over the nations. 29 All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive.
Philippians 2:10–11 NASB95
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
When will you bow a knee?
