Some cross references I used this morning as proof text include
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. 2016. Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
In the first half of the Book of exodus we have the actual exodus itself
Second half, here, we have the events at Mount Sinai and the law revealed to Moses
This particular section is known as the intercession of Moses
Moses has already received the law, once,
and while he was receiving it they made the golden calf
So what happened, he came down from the mountain
Saw what they were doing and broke them in anger
Then went back up to the mountain and interceded for them
So, as we tie this reference into this morning
lets look at 3 things Moses asked for as he interceded for Israel, however, we are only going to focus on 1.
The last one and the one we referred to this morning
First, Moses asks God to “show me . . . your ways” (v. 13). He wants to know God’s mind, to stay in constant communion with God, to experience the reality of his presence.
Second, Moses asks God to go with Israel on the journey (vv. 14–17). Earlier God had indicated that he would not go with his people (vv. 1–6) lest he destroy them. But for Moses, that was not good enough; he would rather not go to the Promised Land if God did not go with them. In response, God reaffirms that he would go with them and he would grant them favor.
Third, Moses asks God to show his glory to him (v. 18). One would think that Moses has already seen the glory of the Lord at the burning bush, through the plagues, at the Red Sea, and in many other ways.
But obviously he hadn't
See Moses had only a taste of Gods glory thus far and longed for more
And what did God do for Moses, he granted him this request
well, sort of
He put him in a cliff, covered his face with his hand and passed by
Because no one has every seen God and lived
Until, what we talked about this morning
How Jesus, became the fullness and the glory of God
And how now, we can finally see God
In the person Jesus Christ
We all long to see God don’t we?
Every one has it placed on their heart
and we rest assured that if we want to see God and his Glory
we can look no further than Jesus Christ
And just how Moses interceded for Israel at this time
So Christ Intercedes for us
Maybe discuss other religions and intercession
Catholics?
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
We talked this morning about God being the author of Grace
And that Christ is the fullness of God and in him are grace and truth
and through him we receive grace upon grace
That Grace has been present since page 1 of our bibles
But this one, this is one of the best known passages on grace
this entire chapter is absolutely fantastic
But, in regards to the grace we discussed this morning
It is a gift from God
And that is exactly what this cross reference says
But, not only is grace our undeserved favor from god
we receive salvation through it
And what exactly is salvation
Salvation actually means deliverance from danger or suffering
To be saved from something
and in our case, salvation, is to be saved from Gods wrath
from his judgement of sin
we know that we are separated from God because of our sin
and if we continue to be separated from God
If we continue to submit to our sin
then we will forever be separated from God and his eternal judgement of those who are separated from him
This seems harsh but it really isn't
we are underserving of Gods grace
But, because God is loving and has mercy
He shows grace, freely
and it is because of his grace, as displayed through is son
That he decides to save us
Because of his grace, he sent his son Jesus to die on the cross, to be raised again through his resurrection and thus achieving salvation for all of us
All of this is done and was done solely due to Gods grace
So, since we are on this topic of grace, salvation etc ill explain it a little more by asking this question
How to we receive this gift of grace, as provided to us by God through Christ?
It is through faith in that very grace that saves us
clear as mud lol
But just so that we are clear
Faith is not a work
Faith is also a gift from God
Our entire salvation is a gift from God
And now, onto our last one
The law fulfilled
For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
We spoke this morning about Jesus and how he is the fulfillment of the OT
And that is absolutely correct
But there is another concept we see in the OT pertaining to the law that Christ is attributed to filling as well
and that is the office of High Priest
As discussed this morning the law was not intended to save people or make them perfect
it was to point out their sin
and point towards Christ
However, within the construct of the OT law
was the priestly order
This order was from the tribe of Levi
They were the ones that were allowed in to the Holy of Holies
They are the ones that made the sacrifices and offerings on the alter
But, as we know, the high priests and the their laws couldn't save,
and if they could, then there would be no need for Jesus
But, we know they couldn’t
See under the Jewish law, the animal sacrifices had to be repeated
Because they offered just temporary forgiveness
Now we know that Christ is the perfect sacrifice right
we discussed that
But, along with being the sacrifice
Christ is also called a high priest
Because it was through him that sins were forgiven
just as it was though the OT priests that sins were fogiven through the sacrifices
So here, in hebrews we have Jesus compared to Melchizedek
But why Melchizedek?
Because Melchizedek we are told in Genesis is from a priestly line that is not from the line of Levi
Melchizedek is from a different order of priests
It is said he that he belonged to an eternal priesthood of a high order
And while some may say that Melkezidek was a pre incarnation of christ or something like that
that simply isnt true
he seems to have just appeared on the scene is Gen 14, we see him again in the psalms and thats it
It doenst say anywhere where his priest hood started or if it ever ended
thus we can conclude that it was a differant priesthood than that of the levis
And that is what they are saying here
jesus is a high priest, but of a different priesthood
becuase the old preisthoot could not do it, could not atone for sins
but, Christ, as high priest is far better than thme
and in fact, now that Christ has come as the High Priest
we no longer need the priests of old order
We have Christ
We don’t need anyone else
And that is how Christ is the fullfiment of the OT Law
Because he satified every detail of it
completely!
