Open your Bibles to Genesis 3
While you are turning there I will ask tonight’s question that is closely related to question 12… Here is question 12 from last week
Q12 What was the providence of God toward man in the estate in which he was created?
A12 When God had created man, he entered into a covenant of life with him, upon condition of perfect obedience; forbidding him to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, upon pain of death
We looked at the various aspects of the narrative in Genesis and we saw all the good things that God gave to man… Made in His image, with dominion over all creation, good commandments to be fruitful and multiply and access to the Tree of Life, He gave him every green plant for food… Every need met, enjoying communion with his Creator. God’s only condition, the only law Adam had to obey, was not to eat of the knowledge of the tree of good and evil. Adam had limitations and we learned that limitations were good. Limitations allow the fullest expression of freedom.
Ecclesiastes 7:29 “See, I have found only this, that God made men upright, but they have sought out many devices.” God made man perfect but they have sought out many schemes.
So here is tonight’s question… Q13 Did Our First Parents Continue In Their Created State?
A13 No, left to choose freely they ate the forbidden fruit and they fell, they sinned. REPEAT
READER 1 Let’s read from Genesis 3.1
Genesis 3 | 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which Yahweh God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” ASK FOR A RESTATEMENT | ASK FOR THE CORRECT RENDERING FROM Genesis 2:16–17 “And Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may surely eat; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat from it; for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”” QUESTIONS
READER 2
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, ‘You shall not eat from it, and you shall not touch it, lest you die.’” IS THAT CORRECT? | REREAD Genesis 2:16–17 “And Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may surely eat; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat from it; for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”” QUESTIONS
READER 3
4 And the serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” RESTATE | READ John 8:44 ““You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” QUESTIONS
READER 4
6 Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, so she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. 8 Then they heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God in the midst of the trees of the garden. QUESTION/RESPONSE
Q13 Did Our First Parents Continue In Their Created State?
A13 No, left to choose freely they ate the forbidden fruit and they fell, they sinned. REPEAT
Ecclesiastes 7:29 ““See, I have found only this, that God made men upright, but they have sought out many devices.””
Adam and Eve were our first parents, Q10 tells us that God made people special, only male and female, in His own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness with dominion over all Creation. He gave us everything we needed and they, our parents, of their own free will fell from this state. They disobeyed the one restriction that God had placed on them and they fell from fellowship with God - they sinned. No longer could they enjoy paradise with their Maker. THIS IS A TRAGEDY
At the moment that they bit into the fruit, they died spiritually and their bodies began to die. At the moment they took the fruit then Creation which they were entrusted with was subjected to slavery, to futility, to corruption (Romans 8.20-22 and has been enslaved from then until now). Adam and Eve now they are scared - that had never happened before. Now there was a barrier to communion… They disobeyed and they knew it… This is horrible news. That is what sin does… We think that sin is a little thing and we are so wrong. We think it is little because like Adam and Eve we do not believe God.
Have you ever sinned against someone you love. What happened to you? Have you ever sinned against a friend or a parent and all of a sudden it is hard to be around each other? WAIT
Can I tell you some good news? Romans 5:18–19 “So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were appointed sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be appointed righteous.” DRAW THIS OUT UNTIL 7:30pm
What is that talking about… Who knows?
SO WHAT? ASK WHY ANY OF THIS MATTERS AT ALL
We live in the aftermath of Adam and Eve’s choice… They chose to disobey God - we should trust God because He tells us the truth - if He warns about danger we should believe Him and He does warn us in His Word of the dangers of sin.
We should know that God loves us immeasurably - He has provided everything that we needed - even now He has not abandoned us He has supplied a Savior to redeem us from sin
