Introduction
A perfect creation had now been marred by sin. Satan had deceived Eve and Adam had sinned when his wife gave him the fruit to eat and he ate it. After Adam ate of the fruit he blamed eve and God in the same breath. His sin had consequences that are still effecting us today and will continue to effect the world until God makes all things new.
Satan had caused Eve to doubt the goodness of God and she believed the lie that Satan told her that God was holding something back from her. Satan is still using this tactic today, he puts thoughts in our mind such as “If God is so good why did he allow ________ to happen?” Satan wants you to doubt so you will sin against God.
Last week we looked at the deception of Eve and the sin of Adam, this week I want us to look at God’s plan for redemption and the punishment for Sin.
God’s Plan for Redemption vs, 14-15
God’s Plan for Redemption vs, 14-15
Because of what Satan had done he was
Cursed above all cattle and every beast of the field
He would no longer be able to walk around, he would slither around on his belly
He would eat dust the rest of his days
In verse 15 we have the first mention of a promise of a saviour.
God says he will put enmity between Satan and the woman
Enmity- God made satan our enemy, our adversary.
When God mad man he gave him dominion over the earth and everything that was in the earth, so Satan thought if he could convince Adam and eve to sin then he could convince them to give him dominion
Here we also read of the prophecy that Christ would be born of a woman
That prophecy was fulfilled, when a virgin named Mary conceived miraculously conceived a son whose name would be called Jesus
We also read the prophecy that Jesus would defeat Satan
As Jesus was hanging on the cross, Satan thought he had won
As Jesus was in the tomb for three days, Satan thought he had won ‘
On that third day when Jesus arose from the dead and Jesus defeated death, hell and the grave the end of Genesis 3:15 was fulfilled.
The punishment for sin vs. 16-24
The punishment for sin vs. 16-24
The Woman’s punishment vs. 16
Her pain in childbirth would be greatly multiplied
Had Eve not sinned, the experience in childbirth would have been easy and pleasant like every other experience in the perfect world God created.
The curse of sin fell on Eve and greatly multiplied the pain and sorrow she would experience in child birth.
Her husband would rule over her.
Henry Morris “She who acted independently of her husband in her desire for the forbidden fruit must henceforth exercise her desires through her husband and he would be the ruler in the family”
The “rule” of a true christian husband is not one of harshness or subjugation, but one of loving companionship and caring responsibility.
In the new testament over and over we see both Paul and Peter show us that this is still the pattern set forth by God
Eph. 5:22-33
Col 3:18-21
1 Pet 3:1-7
The Man’s punishment vs. 17-19
someone said it like this “the full weight of the curse fell on Adam, as the responsible head of the human race, and on all his dominion.
Adam chose to hearken to the voice of his wife rather than obeying the word of God. vs. 17
The ground was cursed because of Adams sin. vs. 17
The perfect world that God created was now marred by sin.
Something that wouldn’t decay, was now started the decaying process
Romans 8:20-22 “For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”
The curse was meant as a lesson to us as well
the curse forced Adam to recognize the seriousness of his sin, to realize the danger of trusting anyone but the creator, and his inability to save himself from the destruction sin had caused.
The curse does the same for us. It shows us that by the first Adam sin entered the world, but it also shows us the promise of the second Adam, Jesus Christ, who took away the sin of the world.
The curse effected the earth as well vs. 18
When God created the earth it was perfect, I don’t believe there was thorns or thistles, but because of sin those came to the earth.
When I was in my teen years, during the summer, me and my brother would go up and work at the church. A few times a year my pastor would trim the hedges and our job was to go to the ground under the bushes and cut out all the vines. Every now and then even wearing gloves you would get poked by a thorn on those vines. man would that hurt.
Sometimes before mowing season started we would have to go out and dig up the goat heads. If you get poked by one of those it hurts. Every time you get poked by those, you can just thank sin for that, and it should remind us how desperate we are for a saviour.
Because of sin we will work, eat, and return to the earth. vs. 19
Thanks be to God there is life after death.
for those that trust in Jesus, there is heaven
For those who reject jesus, there is hell
Adam gave his wife a name vs. 20
Eve - the mother of all living
The first sacrifice vs. 21
God clothed them with a coat of skins, sacrificing an innocent animal for their covering.
Jesus was an innocent sacrifice that was slain for our covering!
Because of Sin God had to remove them from the Garden
God had to remove them from the garden because now they were sinners and he didn’t want them to eat of the tree of life.
The tree of life will be in Heaven
Rev 22:1-2 “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
Because of Sin they were banished from the Garden
God put a guard outside the garden to keep them out
Conclusion
Conclusion
Sin entered the world with Adam, but God had a plan all along.
