Intro- never go grocery shopping when you are hungry

Two types of stresses....in your control and out of your control....
1 Corinthians 14:33
The New International Version (Chapter 14)
33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace

A disordered life will lead to death.

The answer is shalom...

A large obstacle towards shalom and closeness with God is our desires…especially because our desires tend to be disordered.

Our desires will often lead us to chose chaos and brokeness.

Jeremiah
New Living Translation (Chapter 17)
9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?
10 But I, the LORD, search all hearts
and examine secret motives.
I give all people their due rewards,
according to what their actions deserve.”
Proverbs
The New International Version (Chapter 4)
23 Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.
Ephesians 2:1-3
The New International Version (Chapter 2)
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh m and following its desires and thoughts.

Our lives can feel chaotic because our desires are disordered.

Talk about ikea woes...
Most of us have a stronger desire to be liked than to be holy.
Most of us who rather be rich than generous.

3 Dangers of desires....

-Distraction

-Discouragement

-Derailment

Desires often distract us and will lead us down a path of death and destruction.

One of the great killers especially is comparison

Comparison causes chaos and kills us.

Comparison corrupts love.

Discouragement can often lead us to the deadly place of complacency.

proverbs
The New International Version (Chapter 1)
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them
Growth takes time...

Desires that are out of order will ultimately derail any intimacy and growth we have in our faith.

1 Timothy
New Living Translation (Chapter 4)
7 Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. 8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 9 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it. 10 This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.

Holy habits lead us to wholeness.

We leave too much to chance…especially with our faith.
talk rule of life

Your desires won’t determine your destination, your sacrifice and commitment will.

“You can make excuses or you can make progress, but you can’t make both.”

Carey Nieuwhof

Only Jesus can truly change your heart and desires.

The New International Version (Psalm 37)
4 Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
“The fewer the desires, the more peace.” - Woodrow Wilson
“The devil’s primary stratagem to drive the soul and society into ruin is deceptive ideas that play to disordered desires, which are normalized in a sinful society.” -John Mark Comer
