Trusting God with Big Problems

1 Samuel 17:20–50 NKJV
20 So David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, and took the things and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the camp as the army was going out to the fight and shouting for the battle. 21 For Israel and the Philistines had drawn up in battle array, army against army. 22 And David left his supplies in the hand of the supply keeper, ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers. 23 Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid. 25 So the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father’s house exemption from taxes in Israel.” 26 Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 27 And the people answered him in this manner, saying, “So shall it be done for the man who kills him.” 28 Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.” 29 And David said, “What have I done now? Is there not a cause?” 30 Then he turned from him toward another and said the same thing; and these people answered him as the first ones did. 31 Now when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them to Saul; and he sent for him. 32 Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” 33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, 35 I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!” 38 So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. 39 David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. 41 So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking. 43 So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!” 45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” 48 So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.
Intro: Dealing with big problems, means all problems. What may be a little problem for someone else, may be a big problem for you. We can deal with them in different ways. You can looks at your problem and see how big it is, and let the fear it bring cause you to do nothing but live in fear.
Elab on David up to this point. Samuel the Prophet came to Jessie’s home to anoint a new king.
This in the first we hear of David since that time.
Now to this story: Israel is at war with the Philistines. There one man, Goliath. Over 9 foot tall. Elab on his challenge. Look at the Israelites response. VS 11
Now David is going to in and show all these great warriors how to deal with this big problem.
David’s brothers were warriors and ere there. Jessie sends his youngest son David with some food you his brothers.

I. Facing the problem. VS 20-24

1 Samuel 17:20–21 NKJV
20 So David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, and took the things and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the camp as the army was going out to the fight and shouting for the battle. 21 For Israel and the Philistines had drawn up in battle array, army against army.
1. David is being obedient to his father here. When he get to the battle field he see the man of war in battle formation, and there are shouting the battle cry.
a. They were lined up for battle, but they were not willing to take on Goliath. Even though the whole army was there, Goliath was the problem, he was the challenge.
b. We can talk about having faith when we face our big problems, but will we have that faith when the problem comes.
c. We can stand firm knowing God is our deliverer, or flee in fear.
VS 23
1 Samuel 17:23 NKJV
23 Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them.
1. As David is talking with his brothers, Goliath comes with the same challenge he has been giving for the past 40 days. He would be been a distant a way, but they still heard him.
a. Goliath was not going away. At least not yet.
b. We know David kill’s Goliath, but this was not the end of his problems. But he had to deal with this on first.
c. Look was the men of Israel do when Goliath stick up his ugly head.
VS 24
1 Samuel 17:24 NKJV
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid.
1. The because of great fear. They were greatly afraid.
a. These were men of war. Men that had been in battle before, they were great warriors. But they still ran in fear because of one big problem. Goliath.
b. As followers of Jesus, we know that the Lord is always with us, he says “I will never leave you or forsake you”
c. David would later write: Psalm 18:2 The Lord in my rock, my fortress, and deliverer”
d. David was ready to put his faith into action, when the other were on the run.

Face your problems when others faith fail. VS 25-30

VS 25-27
1 Samuel 17:25–27 NKJV
25 So the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father’s house exemption from taxes in Israel.” 26 Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 27 And the people answered him in this manner, saying, “So shall it be done for the man who kills him.”
1. These two verses are two different groups of men.
VS 28-30
1 Samuel 17:28–30 NKJV
28 Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.” 29 And David said, “What have I done now? Is there not a cause?” 30 Then he turned from him toward another and said the same thing; and these people answered him as the first ones did.
1. Maybe a bit of jealous on David’s brother here.
a. There always be those that are negative. Even follow Christians.

Putting all your trust in God

VS 31
1 Samuel 17:31 NKJV
31 Now when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them to Saul; and he sent for him.
1. David is pretty fired up. He is up to challenge. VS 26
a. What David had said gets back to Kind Saul and he sends for David.
VS 32
1 Samuel 17:32 NKJV
32 Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
1. Goliath had put fear in these men. “Their hearts had failed them” Their courage had failed them.
a. David has great courage here. When David say’s let no man’s heart fail because of himThe heart is speaking of one’s feeling, and what they were feeling was fear. David is saying, don’t let any man’s courage fail him. I will go and fight with this Philistine.
b. The others had let the fear of this giant of a man put fear in them. We can’t let out problems out fear in us. How do we do this? Look at these next few verses.
c. But first look at the reaction of King Saul.
VS 33
1 Samuel 17:33 NKJV
33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”
Saul’s faith had failed him. This is way David had been anointed King. Saul had put his trust in himself and not God because he had done things his own way and not God’s way.
a. Samuel told King Saul take God had told him to destroy the Amalek’s leave nothing alive. But he speared the King and the best the livestock. He disobeyed God. This was the beginning of his down fall. His faith was not strong.
VS 34-37
1 Samuel 17:34–37 NKJV
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, 35 I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
Read these verses and Elab of how David remembered what God had done for him in the past. This made his faith strong.
a. If you are a follower of Jesus, and you and what his has done for you in the past. You can stand strong and know he be with you when you face your big problems.
b. The problem may not be taken away, but He will be with you.
a. In VS 35 David say, I went after him and struck him. He is saying I attacked him. But we see in VS 37 Said, the Lord delivered me:
b. He knew it was God who got him through it, and the Lord would deliver him out of the hands of the Philistine.
c. When you are facing your big problems, recall what God has dome for you in the past, and when you pray, pray that way, God knows what he has done for you in the past, but I believe he wants so to bring it to him in pray.
d. It’s not that God forgets, but it’s our faith when we pray it in the right way.
VS 38-39
1 Samuel 17:38–39 NKJV
38 So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. 39 David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off.
Read and Elab
What happened here sounds like a good idea, but it was not God’s way of dealing with it.
VS 40
1 Samuel 17:40 NKJV
40 Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.
Read and Elab
VS 41-44
1 Samuel 17:41–44 NKJV
41 So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking. 43 So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
a. What we have here is trash talk by Goliath. It’s always the big guy that tries to put fear in the smaller guy with intimidation.
b. Remember all the solders of Israel ran when they saw Goliath.
b. Our problems can be very intimating. So much so that when give up, give in instead of giving them to God.
VS 45
1 Samuel 17:45 NKJV
45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
VS 46-49
1 Samuel 17:46–49 NKJV
