Wrong King
Wrong King
People of Israel asks for a King like the other Nation
A King according to their own Hearts
In Judges there is a irresponsible cycle of abandonment of God followed by calamity then crying out to God
God is the King of Israel And He frees them from their trouble
God in mercy raises a Judge to free them… and it starts all over again…
There is chaos in the way Israel would live and the priesthood is replete with corruption.
During that chaos, God uses a woman’s tragedy to establish a lineage of the Kings of Israel, Ruth1:1
Question? Was a human monarchy part of Gods plan?
God warned Israel through Moses that they would want a King like the nations around them…
Gods Instructions in appointing judges….
Deut. 17:14-20
Deuteronomy 17:14–20 (NKJV)
“When you come to the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and possess it and dwell in it, and say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations that are around me,’ you shall surely set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses; one from among your brethren you shall set as king over you; you may not set a foreigner over you, who is not your brother. But he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall not return that way again.’ Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself.
“Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites. And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes, that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel.
God, knowing that the people would want a king, had prepared a king according to His own heart…. That through that royal blood line Jesus can reign forever
I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
1 Sam 8 The people want a King….
Samuel is old
Many years have past since the battle at Mizpa
Samuel had two sons Joel and Abiaj…. They were serving as Judges in Beersheba…. About 50 miles away from Rama where Samuel lived
They were greedy (avaros) they took bribes (dejándose sobornar), eran malos en dictaminar juicios.
Maybe the distance and Samuels busy life journies ministering to all of israel suffered his ability to raise and correct his sons
all Israel recognized in Samuel a leadER from God
But…. He was old…. And his sons had a bad rap….
The people saw no future of leadership in Samuels sons
They felt that the government model of Judges and levites was becoming obsolete….
Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
God spoke about what a king should and should not do
They jump the gun; they lose patience and want to take matters in their own hands….
God will established the Monarchy… since a throne is to be established for Jesus to reign from
But just as Sarah and Abraham took matters into their own hands having Sarahs maid servant Hagar carry Abraham’s baby…. So now Israel wants to hurry Gods hand… and fashion a King
The people ask Samuel to “make them a King” fashion for them a king in the likeness of the nations that surround them….
in the book of judges we read about many of these kings and the atrocities they would commit….
When God freed Israel from Egyptian captivity they were led into the desert and at Mount Sinai… Moses spent 40 nights on top of the mountain
The people lost faith and hope that Moses would return…
They began to question who is this God that Moses has given us… How can we believe in Him or trust Him if we cant even see him…
So they asked Aaron.. “Make us a God” fashion him in the likeness of the gods of Egypt… So we can see ut and believe in it and touch it and worship before it….
Israel began a behavior that would carry on into the days of Samuel
Instead of wanting God to be their King… they wanted a king they can see… no matter what the cost…
God tells Samuel
And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.
as we have read God had fortoled that the people would want a king to rule over them like the surrounding nations
God reminds Samuel the people have not rejected Samuel, they have reject God…. Israel has demonstrated that they always would reject God and go after other idols…. Así como me lo han hecho a mi ahora también a Samuel
GOD WAS NOT SURPRISED…. GOD ALWAYS HAS A PLAN
They wanted to be led into battle by the king
Hod had just demonstrated His great power thundering from the heavens and confusion the philistines and defeating them at Mizpa
They had enjoyed piece under the leadership of Samuel
1 Samuel 8:1 (NKJV)
Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel.
1 Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba.
3 But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah,
5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the Lord.
7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also.
9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king.
11 And he said, “This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots.
12 He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.
13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers.
14 And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants.
15 He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants.
16 And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work.
17 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants.
18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.”
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,
20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord.
22 So the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed their voice, and make them a king.” And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”
