Pray Psalm 146

Recap

Matthew 19:27–30 ESV
27 Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
Jesus is not calling people away from everything that makes life enjoyable. He is calling them to make sacrifices indeed, but to make sacrifices in a worthwhile cause, and one that in the end will bring a rich reward. He is not suggesting that they serve him simply in order to obtain a reward; if they do, they have not escaped the worldliness he calls them to abandon. But the reality is that when they respond to his call they enter an abundant life in which they will receive a hundredfold.
Next parable will be a subtle rebuke from end of Chapter 19
Reminder that if we are serving Jesus for a reward, we are missing the point yet again

Read 20:1-16

How Would you react if you were worker number 1?
What warning is Jesus giving specifically to the 12?
Disciples should not measure worth by comparing to accomplishments and sacrifices of others.
focus on serving God from a heart of gratitude

ends the parable with the same statement of last first and first last

Pray for your kids and family and future family
Places of Honor
Probably asking because Jesus talks about this in chapter 19 “sitting on 12 thrones”
Cup means God’s will for you and your “destiny”

James became first martyr and John was persecuted and exiled

Read 20:24-28

Why do you think other disciples were mad?
Jesus didn’t say servant, but slave, the lowest in society
How can we model this kind of upside down kingdom?
Jesus modelled this first, then taught it
That obedience which is not voluntary is disobedience, for the Lord looketh at the heart, and if he seeth that we serve him from force, and not because we love him, he will reject our offering.
Charles Spurgeon
The principle that rules us is not “Must I?” but “May I?” It becomes to the believer a joy and a delight to serve Christ; he is not flogged to his duty. Jesus Joyfully Received, Volume 46, Sermon #2701 - Luke 19:6
Charles Spurgeon
Ransom for many
Ransom is to trade for the life of another. Christ came to serve, and to trade his life for those who by grace through faith place their faith in Christ

Read 20:29-34

What do you notice about their call to Jesus?
One is Bartimeaus in Mark and Luke
In face of rejection by his own people and impending crucifixion Christ showed compassion to those in need
What’s different about their response to being healed?
Son of David
Saul came right into power, and it seduced his heart, but David had to depend on God. David had to trust in God. David became like David’s greater son, mature through suffering, perfect through obedience.
