Prejudice
Prejudice
PREJUDICE = preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.
SO IT IS : THAT I HAVE PRE JUDGED A SITUATION OR A PERSON WITHOUT ALL THE FACTS.
IN THE BUSINESS WORLD 1% OF PEOPLE IN A ROOM THAT YOU WALK INTO WILL NOT LIKE YOU ON SIGHT. THEY WILL PRE-JUDGE YOU.
to cause to have often negative opinions formed without sufficient knowledge
prejudice usually implies an unfavorable prepossession and connotes a feeling rooted in suspicion, fear, or intolerance.
EVIDENCE
STORY
I WAS BORN IN SOUTH AFRICA AND GREW UP IN THE APARTHEID ERA.
OF COURSE I HAD MANY PRECONCEIVED OPINIONS NOT BASED ON REASON OR ACTUAL EXPERIENCE.
I WAS TOLD HOW TO THINK AND FEEL AND ACT TOWARD OTHER PEOPLE. PEOPLE THAT WERE DIFFERENT TO ME.
IN CANADA:
Worked in the bank - client would not let me serve him as I was South African and took part in apartheid.
HE HAD A PRECONCEIVED IDEA AND THEN ACTED ON IT.
HIS OPINION WAS NOT BASED ON REASON OR ANY EXPERIENCE.
Prejudice vs. Discrimination
Prejudice vs. Discrimination
Sometimes, prejudice is confused with discrimination. While prejudice involves having negative attitudes toward members of a certain group, discrimination occurs when those feelings are acted upon.
UNCHECKED PREJUDICE LEADS TO DISCRIMINATION
17 “When I had returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance
18 and saw him saying to me, ‘Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.’
19 And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you.
20 And when the blood of Stephen your witness was being shed, I myself was standing by and approving and watching over the garments of those who killed him.’
21 And he said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ”
22 Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live.”
23 And as they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air,
24 the tribune ordered him to be brought into the barracks, saying that he should be examined by flogging, to find out why they were shouting against him like this.
LETS JUST DO SOME HISTORY INTO THIS STORY - LETS REASON THIS STORY.
37 As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he said to the tribune, “May I say something to you?” And he said, “Do you know Greek?
38 Are you not the Egyptian, then, who recently stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand men of the Assassins out into the wilderness?”
39 Paul replied, “I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no obscure city. I beg you, permit me to speak to the people.”
LESSONS WE LEARN FROM THIS:
The Bible Knowledge Commentary 22:21–22
Paul mentioned his commission to preach to the Gentiles, the mob was moved to instant rage and violence. Preaching to Gentiles could not have caused such a response because the religious authorities of Israel had preached to Gentiles
The Bible Knowledge Commentary 22:21–22
. Paul’s message that infuriated the mob was that Jews and Gentiles were equal without the Law of Moses
The Bible Knowledge Commentary 22:21–22
This response is important to the argument of the Book of Acts. It indicates the Jews in Jerusalem had irrevocably refused the gospel of Jesus Christ and had sealed their fate.
1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple.
2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
IN THE YEAR 70 AD THE TEMPLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED
WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW THIS?
UNCHECKED PREJUDICE LEADS TO DISCRIMINATION
NO ONE IS EXEMPT FROM THIS
THE JEWISH PEOPLE HAD BEEN PRESENTED THE FACTS AGAIN AND AGAIN
JESUS FULFILLED OVER 300 PROPHESIES
THE JEWISH PEOPLE DID NOT BELEIVE THAT THE MESSIAH HAD COME
THEY CLOSED THEIR EARS TO IT AND THEIR HEARTS AS WELL
10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’
13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
how do we show up as representatives of God?
what preconceived opinion do i have?
Paul’s message that infuriated the mob was that Jews and Gentiles were equal without the Law of Moses
WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO ABOUT IT?
CHECK YOUR HEART
ASK GOD TO SHOW YOU TODAY WHO YOU HAVE BEEN PREJUDICE AGAINST
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem;
19 then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.
