Text: Revelation 1:14
Intro: When John turns to look upon the Lord in Glory he describes His hair as being both white like wool and as white as snow. This isn’t because John had a hard time determining which metaphor to use was he was describing the Hair of Christ. It isn’t because he was over emphasizing that it was white, but he is giving us two very distinct truths concerning the hair of Christ and thus describing for us two truths concerning Christ Himself! To understand these truths it will require us to compare spiritual with spiritual. (1 Cor. 2:13)
White like wool:
There are only two places in the Scriptures that we see hair likened unto wool. The first being in Revelation 1:14 and the other is in the vision that God gives in Daniel chapter 7.
Daniel 7:9 KJV 1900
I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
Why are the two descriptions not the same? The description given in Daniel 7 is not describing the Lord Jesus Christ but it is describing God the Father. The Son of man came in the clouds of heaven to the Ancient of days where He is given dominion, and glory, and a kingdom. (13)
Is there really a difference? ____________.
John 10:30 KJV 1900
I and my Father are one.
John 14:8–9 KJV 1900
Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
I believe the key to understanding His hair being white like wool is found in Daniel chapter 7. The name of God “Ancient of days” is directly connected with the hair like pure wool or hairs that were white like wool.
It is in the description of His hairs being “white like wool” that we behold the Lord Jesus Christ as the Everlasting ONE!
Daniel in His vision in the Old Testament, when he sees the throne, and the eternally existent One he sees the Father, and when John is caught up on the Lords day and God reveals Himself to John as the eternally existent One, he sees Christ!
A truth that has already been stated in Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, and beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”
And again we see it in
Revelation 1:11 KJV 1900
Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
Through all of this we gain this understanding. That there has never been a time where He (Christ) did not exist!
John 17:24 KJV 1900
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
1 Peter 1:19–20 KJV 1900
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
Jesus Christ is the Eternally Existent One!
White as snow:
It is in the description of His hairs being “as white as snow” that we behold the Lord Jesus Christ as wholly Righteous!
Proverbs 16:31 KJV 1900
The hoary head is a crown of glory, If it be found in the way of righteousness.
This statement has never been more true about a person than of the Lord Jesus Christ, the One who knew no sin.
1 John 2:1 KJV 1900
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
We see Him described during His transfiguration on the Mount of Olives as this,
Mark 9:3 KJV 1900
And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
A fuller is one who cleans and refines clothing to make them white. Mark is explaining to us a white so white that eyes have never seen anything like it. He calls it, “exceeding white as snow...”. A way in which finite minds can grasp a truth about an INFINITELY RIGHTEOUS GOD!
Isaiah 56:1 KJV 1900
Thus saith the Lord, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: For my salvation is near to come, And my righteousness to be revealed.
Isaiah 62:1 KJV 1900
For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, Until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, And the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.
Isaiah 62:2 KJV 1900
And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, And all kings thy glory: And thou shalt be called by a new name, Which the mouth of the Lord shall name.
It is on the merits of Christ’s Righteousness that we are deemed Righteous!
Isaiah 64:6 KJV 1900
But we are all as an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; And we all do fade as a leaf; And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV 1900
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Because He is Righteous, we may too be declared Righteous!
