John 14:15-31 — Immanuel – The Abiding Presence of God

Matthew 1:23-25

Child.

I. We remember that God came to us in that child. “God with us.” This should remove all dread of God.

II. That God can come to us in -the smallest things.

III. That the whole of life is sacred, and should be consecrated to God.

IV. That great endings have little beginnings. (B. Preece.)

Matt 1:23

Matthew 1:23 KJV 1900
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Emmanuel.

Emmanuel

I. Christ came as god with man.

1. To live with man.

2. With man, to die for him.

3. With man, to rise from the dead for him.

4. With man, to ascend and intercede for him.

II. God is with his people.

1. He is with them in their lives.

2. In their labours.

3. In their trials and afflictions.

4. In their worship. In death and in glory. (C. H. Wetherbe.)

The birth of Christ

1. The importance of the event to which Isaiah looks forward, and which the evangelist describes as fulfilled.

1. The occurrence was of a preternatural character. To raise us from degradation Christ Himself must be sinless. Evil had descended. How was this fatal entail to be cut off? The virgin birth was the answer.

2. Christ’s birth marked the entrance into the sphere of sense and time of One who had existed from eternity.

3. No other birth has ever involved such important consequences to the human race.

II. The contrast between the real and the apparent importance of Christ’s birth.

The kingdom of God had entered into history without observation.

Caesar’s palace seemed to be more important to the world than the manger.

The apparent is not always the real.

III. What is the practical meaning of this birth to us, and what relation have we to Him who, for the love of us, was born of the virgin? (Canon Liddon.)

Jesus Christ the centre of history

I. The world expected an Emmanuel.

II. God was preparing the world for the coming of Emmanuel.

III. The world could not produce the Emmanuel.

IV. As the Emmanuel was the goal of ancient, so He is the starting-point of modern history. (J. C. Jones)

At an earlier age the Incarnation would have been meaningless

The mariner’s compass has been known in China for thousands of years; nevertheless, for the most part of that time it was but little better than a toy-the Chinese mind was not educated enough to estimate its value.

Only a few centuries ago the compass became a blessing to mankind, because only a few centuries ago we attained the intellectual state requisite to apprehend its usefulness.

And did the Incarnation take place in the days of Abraham, or of Moses, or of David, it would have been an idle, purposeless miracle, so far as its human aspect is concerned, and Christ would have died in vain. (J. C. Jones.)

The Man Christ Jesus

1. Humanity needed a Saviour.

2. The Mediator was to come in the purity and the power of sinless human character.

3. We, as a part of the human world, must join in this longing of human hearts for a Christ.

4. When this yearning of mankind was taken up into the guidance and inspiration of God it became prophecy.

5. These things are a declaration of the one fact which lies, central and life-giving, at the heart of all our Christian thoughts and hopes.

6. We come short of the full grandeur of the gospel when we take the clause, “God with us,” as signifying only one among us-a Deity moving among individuals, outside of them all, and, however friendly and gracious, still an external Person, saving them only by a work wrought all above them.

7. Then, too, it will begin to appear what Christ’s own people may be, acknowledging their membership, confirmed and alive in His body. (Bishop Huntingdon,.)

Let Him be one of us, that we may be one in Him. (J. C. Jones.)

Emmanuel, God with us

I. We know, in consequence of the revelations made by Christ, that God is so with us, so near to us, that our very existence is every moment upheld by him. We exist not by chance, etc.; but whatever subordinate causes may be employed, they all derive their efficacy from Him.

II. We know, too, from the incarnation and doctrine of Christ, that God is with us, not as individuals merely, but with our world, and that also in the way of special grace. He is in the world, not to exhibit His power merely, but that the world of men may be redeemed, etc.

III. In Christ we see that God was with us, in our very nature, to accomplish our redemption.

IV. Though ascended into heaven, he is still “god with us,” by the invisible but mighty influence which He exerts.

V. God is with us, in condescension and special grace, during the whole course of discipline to which He subjects us. Is Christ our Emmanuel? (R. Watson.)

Influence gained by oneness of condition

A Moravian missionary once went to the West Indies, to preach to the slaves.

He found it impossible for him to carry out his design so long as he bore to them the relation of a mere missionary.

They were driven into the field very early in the morning, and returned late at night with scarcely strength to roll themselves into their cabins, and in no condition to be profited by instruction.

They were savage toward all of the race and rank of their masters.

He determined to reach the slaves by becoming himself a slave.

He was sold, that he might have the privilege of working by their side, and preaching to them as he worked with them.

Do you suppose the master or the pastor could have touched the hearts of those miserable slaves as did that man who placed himself in their condition, and went among them, and lived as they lived, suffered as they suffered, toiled as they toiled, that he might carry the gospel to them?

This missionary was but following the example of the Lord Jesus Christ, who took on Him the nature of men, came among them, and lived as they lived, that He might save them from their sins. (Beecher.)

In what sense is Christ God with us? In His incarnation united to our nature-God with man-God in man. He is God with us to comfort, enlighten, protect, and defend us in time of temptation and trial, and in the hour of death, and God with us, and in us, and we with and in Him to all eternity. (A. Clarke. LL. D.)

Behold at once the deepest mystery and the richest mercy. By the light of nature we see the eternal as a God above us: by the light of the law we see Him as a God against us; but, by the light of the gospel, we see Him as a God with us, reconciled to us, at peace with us, interested for us, interceding in our behalf. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift! (Dr. Hughes.)

Matthew 1:23

Matthew 1:23 (KJV 1900)
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The great essential doctrine of Christianity lies in these few words, God with us.

To hear of Christ having come on this earth for a little time, and then having gone away again, would not be to us glad tidings of great joy.

The first apostles would not have won men to the Gospel if they had preached an absent Jesus, One who had left His Church and gone to heaven.

The great secret of our Christian joy lies in this fact, that we believe in a present, not in an absent Jesus; one who is Emmanuel—God with us.

Try to get hold of that great fact of our Lord’s presence, and then you will see what results flow from it.

I. First, that fact should make us humble.

If the Son of God, King of kings, and Lord of lords, chose to come to this earth in the lowliest manner; if He chose a manger to be born in, a workman’s home to live in, the commonest of clothing and of food, surely we, who profess to be His followers, have no right to be proud.

II. The fact of our Lord’s abiding presence ought to make us brave.

If God be for us, and with us, who can be against us?

No temptation need be too strong to be conquered; no difficulty need be too hard to be surmounted by those who know that God is with them—Emmanuel.

III. The fact of our Lord’s abiding presence ought to make us good to each other.

Look on your fellowmen, and learn from the Incarnation to respect man, every man, as wearing the flesh which Jesus wears.

Learn to look upon all men as brethren, who have a claim upon us in their need.

There is a noble family in Italy whose name of Frangipanni means breakers of bread, that is, for the poor.

We who are bound together in one family with Him who gives us our daily bread, not only bread for the body, but bread for the soul, should all be breakers of bread with our brethren, helping those who have need to a share of our blessings; for thus alone can we give something to Him who freely giveth all things—our Emmanuel, God with us.

H. J. Wilmot-Buxton, The Life of Duty, vol. i., p. 39.

Matthew 1:23 KJV 1900
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

These words contain in themselves the whole history and course and means of man’s redemption.

In their highest sense they express that unfathomable mystery that God hath been with us, in our nature, that the Creator has taken His creature into Himself; but, by virtue of that gracious mystery, they declare God’s presence in His Church, and with and within the souls of her members.

I. Such, then, is the twofold force of the title "Emmanuel, God with us," God in Himself, but with us, and such as we;

not with us merely by mercy, or care, or providence, or protection, but with us as one of us; not restoring us by His word, as He created us, but by becoming as one of us; not by raising us by the hand when fallen, but by humbling Himself to us; Himself sinking to us, that He might rise with us, placing at God’s right hand, united with Himself, and as part of Himself, the nature which He had redeemed.

II. And if He be such to us in deed and in the fulness of His purpose, if He have been thus God with us, and purposeth that we should be thus with God, how should He not be with us now in all things if we be His?

What but sin can hide His face from us, in that it blinds our eyes that we see Him not? Why should He not be with us on our way, who is Himself the Way?

To us, as to the disciples, He shows Himself in different forms, but He is the selfsame Saviour and Lord in all.

He is our home and sure abiding-place; and all things in this earth may speak of Him, for we dwell in a redeemed world, which His sacred footsteps have trod and sanctified. Only, if we would truly see Him, we must seek to have the mirror of our hearts cleansed, that it may receive His glorious image.

"The pure in heart," He hath promised, shall see Him.

Love is the eye whereby the Spirit sees God.

Disputing about holy things but blinds us.

If we love, and as we love, we shall see and shall receive.

While the world jangles our Lord comes secretly to us, if we, with pure hearts, draw nigh to Him.

John 14:15–31 (KJV 1900)
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

BIG IDEA:

DESPITE HIS IMMINENT DEPARTURE, CHRIST PROMISES ONGOING REVELATION / ILLUMINATION TO THOSE WHO DEMONSTRATE THEIR LOVE BY OBEDIENCE INTRODUCTION:

The Big Key here is a simple one. OBEDIENCE

Problem the disciples faced:

– If Christ was the one to reveal God the Father to them . . .

– and Christ was about to die on the cross and return to heaven . . .

– How would they continue to behold God and grow in their knowledge of Him?

One of the greatest passages to reveal the doctrine of the Trinity – special emphasis on the person and role of the Holy Spirit

Continues the theme of Reassurance from first half of John 14

John 14 (KJV 1900)
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Immanuel means “God with us” – much here about the Abiding Presence of God

I. (John 14 :15-17) PROMISE OF THE ABIDING PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT OUR FIRST MEMBER OF THE TRINITY IN THIS SCENE.

John 14:15–17 (KJV 1900)
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

A. (John 14 :15) One Condition for Blessing: Demonstrate Love by Obedience “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” How different from the legalism of the Pharisees!

John 14:15 (KJV 1900)
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

B. (John 14 :16) One United Triune God at Work: Emphasis: Abiding Presence of God the Holy Spirit – this is the major emphasis in this passage – explaining the upcoming new and expanded role of the Holy Spirit

John 14:16 KJV 1900
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

1. Intercessory Ministry of God the Son “And I will ask the Father” What type of response does Christ receive from His petitions of the Father?

What had He just promised us in Chap. 14 about asking and receiving?

2. Gift of God the Father “and He will give you”

3. Nature of God the Holy Spirit “another Helper” Proves the Personality of the Holy Spirit – distinct from Christ; yet another of the same kind.

Ryrie: The Holy Spirit is called the Helper (Greek: paraclete, as also in John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7). In the root of this word are the ideas of advising, exhorting, comforting, strengthening, interceding, and encouraging.

John 14:26 (KJV 1900)
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 15:26 (KJV 1900)
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 16:7 (KJV 1900)
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

The only other occurrence of the word outside this discourse in the N.T.

is in 1 John 2:1 applied to Christ and translated “Advocate.”

1 John 2:1 (KJV 1900)
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Here and in the other passages in John cited above, Christ teaches that the Holy Spirit

(1) will indwell Christians (vv. John 14: 16-17);

John 14:16–17 (KJV 1900)
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

(2) will help the disciples recall the events of His life (John 14:26);

John 14:26 (KJV 1900)
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

(3) will convince the world of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:7-11);

John 16:7–11 (KJV 1900)
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

(4) will teach believers the truth (John 15:26; 16:13-15).

John 15:26 (KJV 1900)
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 16:13–15 (KJV 1900)
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

4. Eternal Scope “that He may be with you forever.” Another support for Eternal Security and Perseverance of the saints.

C. (:17) One Dominant Function of the Holy Spirit

1. Proclaimer of Truth “that is the Spirit of truth”

2. Accessible only to Believers (chiastic structure: A B B A — Behold / Know / Know / Behold)

a. Unknown by the world “whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him”

b. Intimate with Believers “but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you”

II. (John 14 :18-21) PROMISE OF THE ABIDING PRESENCE OF CHRIST HIMSELF our second member of the trinity God’s SON HIMSELF is there with us at all times.

John 14:18–21 (KJV 1900)
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

A. (John 14 :18) Separation is Only Temporary “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

One writer puts it this way:

John 14:18 (KJV 1900)
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

The fulfillment of the promise began at the Resurrection, when Christ’s humanity was glorified; and the promise was potentially completed at Pentecost. The life of the Church is the realization of the Pentecostal coming of the Lord, which is to be crowned by His coming to Judgment. No one specific application of the phrase exhausts its meaning.

B. (John 14 :19) One Dominant Function of God the Son

John 14:19 (KJV 1900)
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

1. Accessible only to Believers

a. Unknown by the world “After a little while the world will behold Me no more;”

b. Intimate with Believers “but you will behold Me;.”

2. Provider of Life “because I live, you shall live also.”

C. (John 14 :20) One United Triune God at Work: Emphasis: Abiding Presence of God the Son

John 14:20 (KJV 1900)
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

1. Significance of Pentecost “In that day you shall know” Some debate over what “day” is referred to here.

2. Son Abides in the Father “that I am in My Father,”

3. Believers Abide in the Son “and you in Me,”

4. The Son Abides in Believers “and I in you.”

D. (John 14 :21a) One Condition for Blessing: Demonstrate Love by Obedience “He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me”

John 14:21a (KJV 1900)
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

E. (John 14 :21b) Blessing From the Triune God

John 14:21b (KJV 1900)
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

1. Loved by God the Father “and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father”

2. Loved by God the Son “and I will love him”

3. Enlightened by God the Holy Spirit “and will disclose Myself to him” (through the abiding Holy Spirit which continues to be the main emphasis of this passage)

Stedman: Now, if it takes love to obey, what produces love?

That is really the question, isn’t it’?

That is the issue.

If you see a Christian disobeying Christ, or you yourself are tempted to disobey, what is it that will turn you around and make you obey?

It is love. Well, how do you produce love?

What will make you love him?

This is what ties together Verses John 14: 20- 21.

John 14:20–21 (KJV 1900)
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

It is that basic secret of our identity which creates love — the Spirit in us, releasing to us the love of Jesus, awakens love from us in return.

Stedman: That is, occasions and circumstances will arise in which Jesus will be very near, very real, very dear to you.

Increasingly you will learn to know him, and to enter into the understanding of the being and character of the Son of God.

This speaks to the hearts of all who are Christians.

The one thing we want more than anything else is a deeper knowledge of Jesus.

This he promises to those who love him and thus obey him: He will manifest himself to them.

I can testify that there have been times in my own experience, particularly of recent days, when the Lord Jesus has been more real to me than any other person — so real, it seemed, that I could touch him!

This is the manifestation of his response to love from us.

III. (:John 14 :22-24) PROMISE OF THE ABIDING PRESENCE OF GOD THE FATHER THE WHOLE PRESENCE OF THE TRINITY HIMSELF , THIS PRESENCE CAPTURES IT ALL FOR US.

John 14:22–24 (KJV 1900)
Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

A. (John 14 :22, 24b) One Dominant Function of God the Father

John 14:22 (KJV 1900)
Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
John 1:24b (KJV 1900)
And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

1. (John 14 :22) Accessible Only to Believers – Question of Accessibility Introduced “Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, ‘Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

John 14:22 (KJV 1900)
Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

2. (John 14 :24b) Prime Mover “and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.”

John 14:24b (KJV 1900)
He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

B. (John 14 :23a, 24a) One Condition for Blessing: Demonstrate Love by Obedience

John 14:23a (KJV 1900)
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
John 1:24a (KJV 1900)
And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

1. (John 14 :23a) Stated Positively “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word’”

John 14:23a KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

2. (John 14 :24a) Stated Negatively “He who does not love Me does not keep My words”

John 14:24a (KJV 1900)
He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

C. (John 14 :23b) One United Triune God at Work: Emphasis: Abiding Presence of God the Father

John 14:23b (KJV 1900)
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

1. Abiding Love “and My Father will love him,”

2. Abiding Presence “and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him.” primarily through the indwelling Holy Spirit

IV. (:John 14: 25-31) SUMMARY OF REASSURANCE

John 14:25–31 (KJV 1900)

A. (John 14 :25-26) Consistent, Ongoing Revelation / Illumination / Enlightenment Promised

John 14:25–26 (KJV 1900)
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

1. (John 14 :25) Ministry of Christ “These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you.”

John 14:25 KJV 1900
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

2. (John 14 :26) Ministry of the Holy Spirit (work of the united Triune God) “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

John 14:26 (KJV 1900)
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

B. (John 14 :27-28) Encouragement to Peace and Joy (vs. Anxiety/Fear and Discouragement)

John 14:27–28 KJV 1900
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

1. (John 14 :27) Encouragement to Peace – Totally different from what the world can offer “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”

Stedman: We can have that peace under any circumstance, because, as he says, it is not given as the world gives.

John 14:27 (KJV 1900)
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

If you are all upset over something that keeps eating away at you, and you ask a doctor for help, he will give you a tranquilizer — chemical peace!

But as soon as it has worn off you are right back where you were before.

You will have to take more tranquilizers until your mind is dulled and you are half-sedated.

That is how the world gives peace.

Or it resorts to escapism — take a trip to Hawaii, go off to the mountains, lose yourself in some activity.

When you return, the trouble is still there, of course.

But here Jesus speaks of what Paul calls “peace that passes understanding,” {Phil 4:7 }.

Philippians 4:7 (KJV 1900)
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Events do not affect it. It is internal, not subject to external pressure.

Circumstances may not have changed, but there has been imparted to you a consciousness that the One who indwells you is able to handle your problem and you are at peace because of that.

2. (John 14 :28) Encouragement to Joy – Contingent upon Jesus returning to the Father “You have heard that I said to you, I go away, and I will come to you. If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.”

John 14:28 (KJV 1900)
Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

C. (John 14 :29-31) Final Words of Encouragement

John 14:29–31 (KJV 1900)
And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

1. (John 14 :29) Encouragement of Fulfilled Prophecy “And now I have told you before it comes to pass, that when it comes to pass, you may believe.”

John 14:29 (KJV 1900)
And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

2. (John 14 :30) Encouragement Regarding Limited Power of Satan “I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.”

John 14:30 (KJV 1900)
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

3. (John 14 :31) Encouragement of His Own Obedience — Fulfilling His Mission

John 14:31 (KJV 1900)
But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

a. Testimony to the World “but that the world may know that I love the Father”

b. Obedience to His Father “as the Father gave Me commandment, even so I do.”

c. Let’s Go “Arise, let us go from here.”
