Scripture Reading

Romans 3:21–25 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.

Intro

Who is Jesus?

That is the most important question anyone could ever ask because if Jesus is who He says He is then that is a question that can determine your eternal destiny.
The fact is…everyone has to do something with Jesus.
You can’t just ignore Him…you can’t just dismiss Him…
You have to make a decision about who He is and who He claims to be.
C.S. Lewis popularized the famous argument that there are only three options we have when it comes to Jesus.
He is either 1. Liar, 2. Lunatic, or 3. Lord.
As the argument goes, Christ cannot be just another good man.
We hear that argument a lot today.
Jesus isn’t the Son of God…He is just a good, moral teacher.
But if you actually listen to what Jesus taught, He could not be good unless everything He said was true.
He claimed the power and ability to forgive sins (Mark 2:5, Luke 7:48).
He read Isaiah 61 about the Messiah the Savior of the World - the One anointed by the Lord to proclaim liberty to the captives, open the eyes that are blind, free those that are oppressed - and said Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing (Luke 4:21).
And most shocking of all, He claimed to be God.
Sometimes you’ll hear that argument today. Jesus never claimed to be God. He never called anybody to worship Him.
But He did. Time and time again.
Just in the Gospel of John Jesus said in John 5:18 My Father is working until now, and I am working.
Everyone that heard Him knew that Jesus was making Himself equal with God.
And did Jesus correct them? No! He doubled down and said He was equal with God in every way.
Equal in Works, Equal in Authority, even Equal in Honor and Glory - that everyone should worship and honor Him just as they worship and honor the Father (John 5:23).
Worship me the same way you worship God.
No good man could ever say that, unless He was actually the Son of God incarnate in human flesh.
So that leaves us with three options: He is either Lord, Liar, or Lunatic.
Maybe He was a Liar…someone seeking to lead people astray.
And if He was a liar than He is the most evil liar that has ever lived because He led people away from the One True God.
He claimed to be the only way to salvation and if He were not true, then far from saving anyone, He has actually condemned millions and generations of gullible followers to Hell.
Well maybe He was a Lunatic…a madman…crazy.
Crazy people claim to be God all the time.
But people don’t follow a crazy person.
For example, say you saw someone on the street out there claiming to be God, you wouldn’t say, “You know what? All right! I’ll worship you. I’ll follow you. I’ll model my whole life after you.”
No you would say that person is insane and needs serious help.
But people followed Jesus.
Just in John 6, He had 15-20,000 people following Him. And none of them left because He was crazy. They left because they didn’t like what He had to say (John 6:60).
Plus, Jesus did not act or speak like someone who was out of His mind.
Just in our passage today, people are amazed at how well and articulate Jesus was able to speak without any formal training (John 7:15).
They didn’t hear Jesus and hear a crazy person.
They heard someone who was on another plane of intelligence…A genius of a man.
Someone who spoke with an authority and a mastery of all the things that He said.
At the end of John 7 the very people sent to arrest Him come back and say “No one ever spoke like this man!
Even from Jesus’ enemies it is obvious He was not crazy.
So Jesus cannot be a good man. A good man could not be good and still say the things Jesus said.
He might be a liar, but that doesn’t make sense with His sinless and perfect life.
In John 8:46 speaking to His enemies Jesus said Which one of you convicts me of sin?
No one could. Well if Jesus never sinned, that means He never lied.
So it can’t be that.
And He can’t be a lunatic.
That doesn’t fit with who the gospel presents Him to be.
And that leaves only one option. Jesus is Lord.
He is who He said He is.

The Son of God who came to save us from all our sins and redeem us from the curse of the Law.

Who is Jesus?
In John 7:11-31, we see all these options swirling among the people listening to Jesus, all trying to figure out who this man is.
John 7:11–13 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
Some people say He’s a good man.
Some say He’s leading people astray.
And a little bit later a third option comes in in verse 20 where people say You have a demon!
You are out of your mind! You are mad!
And still others say Can this be the Christ? (John 7:26, 31).
Jesus tells us Himself in the rest of the passage and calls of us to a decision: What will you do with Jesus Christ?
With who He is and who He claims to be?
Because Jesus claimed to be the Son of God and the only Savior from all of our sins.
Let’s start with point number 1…

I. Jesus is the Son of God Come Down From Heaven

John 7:14–16 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?
In the Gospel of Matthew after the Sermon on the Mount the Bible says that the crowds were amazed at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes (Matthew 7:28-29).
Jesus didn’t teach like any other man.
In those days your…religious pedigree is what distinguished you from everyone else.
Remember how Paul, giving His credentials talked about learning at the feat of Gamaliel (Acts 2:23).
The more distinguished your teacher the more distinguished you were.
And so religious leaders in those days would come along and stand on the shoulders of giants and say, “And this one says this…and this one says this…and this one says this…”
They would just quote a bunch of guys appealing to tradition to bolster their authority.
But when Jesus came along, He came preaching saying, I say to you
He was greater than even the prophets who would say Thus saith the Lord.
He spoke as One having authority because He was the Eternal Son of God, the Word, the Logos…the Truth incarnate in human flesh.
He did not speak with secondhand knowledge…from one teacher saying this and another saying that.
He spoke with firsthand, direct, heavenly knowledge.
The truth of God directly from from God Himself…not the interpretations or wisdom of men.
That’s exactly what He says in Verse 16…
So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.
In other words Jesus is saying, “I didn’t get my degree from one of the schools of the rabbis. My degree and my authority comes from Heaven itself.”
And this is an important theme in the Gospel of John.
That for John its important that Jesus came from Heaven because not only does it say that He is the eternal Son of God...
Not only does it say He came to die for sinners...
It says that when Jesus speaks, He speaks with firsthand knowledge of heavenly things.
Earlier when Jesus talked to Nicodemus He said No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man (John 3:13).
And Jesus’ point was that no one has gone into heaven and brought a message back about how we are to be saved.
The gospel is not something that originates from this earth.
Its a message sent from God Himself.
And so when Jesus says you must be born again if you want to be saved, and whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life that is a sure word from heaven from God’s One True Prophet who alone has the authority as the Son of God to:
A. Reveal God.
And B. Speak with authority on God’s behalf about all things pertaining to life and salvation.
At the end of John 3 it says He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way (John 3:31).
In other words, no one from the earth can give a sure word of salvation.
Who has ascended to heaven and come down (Proverbs 30:2-4).
Who has come with a sure and true word from God Himself?
He who descended the Son of Man.
John 3:31–34 He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God.
Jesus alone has the authority and true knowledge to tell us heavenly things.
Everything else, all the religions of men are speculations of how men might be made right with God.
That’s why every manmade religion is based on works.
He who belongs to the earth speaks in an earthly way.
It makes sense that we would have to earn our salvation.
But only the Gospel from Heaven says you can’t save yourself. You must be born again.
Its not based on your works, its based on God’s grace.
So Jesus, as the Son of God and God’s One True Prophet speaks with firsthand knowledge about the things of salvation and eternal life.
He has a sure and true word worthy of all of our faith because He bears witness to what He has seen and heard and utters the very words of God.
His teaching is not His own but His who sent Him.
Going back to our passage with verse 17.
John 7:17-18 If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
Jesus here gives two proofs for how we can know His teaching, His gospel, really is from God.
The first is If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or not.
The truth of the gospel is self authenticating.
The Holy Spirit and our conscience bears witness that the gospel of Christ is true.
We know we are guilty and that we need a savior and there is no way for any of us to save ourselves.
But this is where Christ’s conditional If statement comes in.
He says He will know whether the teaching is from God if His will is to do God’s will.
What that tells us is that what keeps someone from coming to Christ is not an intellectual problem, its a moral and spiritual one.
To come to Christ you must humble yourself and earnestly desire to do God’s will.
To let go of all your sin, and trust in Him.
We say this earlier in John 3.
John 3:19–20 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
The reason people do not come to Christ is because they do not want their evil works to be exposed.
They love darkness rather than light.
This speaks to the hardness of the human heart.
The reason people don’t trust in the light of the gospel is because they hate the light.
They love their sin
And they love their sin so much that they are blind to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
But there is also a promise here of great hope.
If you humble yourself, earnestly desire to do God’s will, God will show you.
He does not stand far off or aloof. He loves to save sinners.
He promises in Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
And James 4:8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
If you would renounce your sin and seek God’s will, He will show you the truth in Jesus Christ.
The only thing keeping you is your own unbelieving heart.
The second proof that what Jesus says is true…
That He can be trusted wholeheartedly with all of our faith is verse 18.
John 7:18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
Jesus’ argument goes something like this.
One of the ways you can tell whether or not someone is a false teacher is whose glory do they seek?
Someone who speaks on their own authority are willing to say whatever it takes to attract followers and grow in their personal gain.
They don’t want to feed the flock they want to fleece it.
They want to pad their pockets
Make their name great.
In contrast, if someone isn’t seeking their own glory, but the glory of the one who sent him then that person is true and in him there is no falsehood.
Jesus was seeking the glory of God, not His own personal gain.
He was not some charlatan that said whatever it took to grow the biggest following.
He wasn’t even rich.
Jesus said Foxes have holes, and birds…have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
He was poorer than wild animals.
And He stuck to the truth no matter what it cost.
Just in the last chapter, He lost 15-20,000 followers.
He didn’t care about His own glory, He cared about the glory of the One who sent Him and as such He proves He was not a false teacher and is completely trustworthy.
There is probably even some hint of Jesus contrasting Himself with the Jews and religious leaders of His day who didn’t seek the glory of God, but sought the glory of men (John 5:44).
He said Matthew 23:5–7 They do all their deeds to be seen by others....they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi.
The ones seeking to kill him were the false teachers. Not Jesus.

Summary

So overall point of these few verses in regards to the question “Who is Jesus?” Is that He is the Son of God who came down from heaven to reveal God and give us the sure and true words of eternal life.
He is God’s last Word and the full revelation of God’s glory and salvation.
Hebrews 1:1–3 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.
And because Jesus is true, and in Him there is no falsehood, like John 7:18 says, He is worthy of all of our faith, all of our love, all of our hope and all of our life.
He is the Son of God and as God’s One True Prophet the only way to salvation.
I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).
Who is Jesus?
The Son of God come down from heaven…the incarnation of truth itself worthy of all our faith.
And number 2…

II. Jesus is the Only Savior for All of Our Sins

John 7:19–24 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.
Now this part can get really complicated so we are going to do our best to keep it really simple.
The flow of the argument from verse 18 is basically this...
The reason the Jews do not believe in Him is because they do not want to do God’s will as it is revealed in the Law.
What He is trying to do is show that they are Lawbreakers in need of God’s grace.
And this would have been highly offensive to the Jews because they trusted in the Law.
They looked to the Law and tried to establish their own righteousness.
They looked at God’s commands and saw a ladder to heaven instead of seeing that the Law could not save them.
That they could never keep the Law enough to earn eternal life.
That’s not what the Law was for.
The Law was meant to be a Tutor to drive us to Christ.
Galatians 3:22–24 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.
The Law never had the power to save. It only had the power to condemn.
the Jews heard Leviticus 18:5 which says You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord, and thought ok get to work.
Instead of thinking I can’t keep the Law.
If that’s what it takes for salvation then I have no hope.
They were blind to Christ because they did not see that the Law was given to actually point them to Christ.
Not their own righteousness.
They prided themselves on outward observance of the Law.
Of being really really holy on the outside not realizing their sin was a problem of the heart.
Look what Jesus says...
Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law.
None of you does the Law.
Its the same word that Jesus used when He said if anyone wills to do God’s will.
Why do you seek to kill me?
They don’t keep the Law because even at that very moment they are plotting to murder Jesus.
The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?
And a little bit later in verse 23 Jesus says are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well?
Do you remember what Jesus said? If you are angry with your brother you have already murdered your brother in your heart (Matthew 5:21-23, 1 John 3:15).
The Jews thought they pious LawKeepers.
They had even built a whole system of nit-picky, manmade Laws to make sure they were all really holy .
And Jesus says, you don’t even see that your sin isn’t about external observance to the Law. Its a matter of the heart.
They were angry with Jesus because He broke their laws about the Sabbath and in doing so proved they themselves were LawBreakers because unrighteous anger goes against God’s command, Thou shall not murder.
And this gets to one of the main applications I want to make today.

Sin Starts in the Heart

Sin is a matter of the heart.
It starts in the heart before it ever gets to the hand.
Outward observance of the Law doesn’t matter very much if the heart is still rotten on the inside.
What that means is that we should not be content with outward, external religion.
Its not enough to have clean hands, we should strive for clean hearts.
And honestly clean hands won’t last very long with an unclean heart because a Tree is known by its fruit (Matthew 12:33).
Sin cultivated in the heart will eventually work its way out.
Sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you (Gen 4:7).
To destroy you and tear your life apart.
But the point is before we ever start breaking God’s Law out here, we’ve already broken it in our heart.
So let me ask you a question: What kind of heart are you cultivating?
Are you treasuring sin in your heart.
Like Eve looking at that temptation and believing it is good for food and a delight to the eyes (Gen. 3:6).
Or are you crucifying the flesh along with its desires (Galatians 5:24).

Examples

Let me give you some examples.
Are you fostering bitterness and hatred in your heart?
Anger towards that other person instead of forgiving them?
What about lust?
You understand you don’t just wake up one day and commit adultery on your spouse.
That adultery has already been cultivated day after day in your heart.
Lustful thought. Lustful stares. Critiquing your spouse instead of them be your standard of beauty and desire.
Or for kids.
What is God’s command to you?
Honor your Father and Mother.
Are you cultivating a heart that honors them? Respects them?
Or are you cultivating a heart that rolls your eyes?
That might obey on the outside, but inside is resentment and being wise in your own eyes?
Take your pick. Whatever sin it is…what kind of heart are you cultivating?
Because that’s the heart that is going to bear fruit in your life.
The heart of the Christian that bears the fruit of a life of holiness to the glory of God is on that says Psalm 119:97 Oh how I love your law!…How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way (Psalm 119:103-104).
So here’s how I want to encourage you.
Guard your heart.
Be zealous for the borders of your godliness.
Don’t allow even the smallest of temptations to lay seige on your heart.
Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23).
When sin creeps in crucify it and put it to death.
Don’t flirt with it.
Don’t leave it to grow. Don’t waste a second.
Send out the calvary of your soul to chase it down and run it out of the borders of your soul.
Guard your heart with all vigilance.
Be jealous for your godliness and put your sin to death no matter the cost.

Fulfillment of the Law

We are all LawBreakers form the heart.
And because of that we are all under the Law’s condemnation.
For the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23).
The soul that sins shall die (Ezek. 18:20).
Which is why we need Jesus who is the only one who can save us from all of our sins.
Verse 21:
John 7:21–24 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.
Now the one work Jesus is referring to is the healing of the lame man by a pool on the Sabbath way back in John 5.
If you’ll remember, that’s where the Jews really started their animosity towards Jesus because He was doing works on the Sabbath.
But Jesus wasn’t breaking the Sabbath. He was breaking their manmade traditions about the Sabbath.
That healing a man was actually a fulfillment of the Sabbath, because the Sabbath ultimately pointed to the healing, rest, and salvation we have in Christ.
And here is Jesus’ basic argument.
They are calling Him a sinner. They are accusing Him of breaking the Sabbath by working a deed of mercy and healing a man on the Sabbath.
And Jesus’ point is they have become so consumed with establishing their own righteousness through outward observance of the Law that they had neglected the weightier matters of the Law: [namely] Justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23).
The only reason they thought Jesus was a sinner was because of their misunderstanding and their misuse of the Law all the while thinking that they were righteous before the Law themselves.
And here’s the point.
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.
In other words, if they had truly understood the Law, they would have had it the other way around.
They would have seen Jesus as righteous and themselves as under judgment.
Instead of trying to kill Christ, they would have run to Him knowing He was the only answer for all their sins.
That through the Law came knowledge of sin (Romans 3:19-20), and because of sin we are all under a curse.
We all deserve to die under God’s wrath for all of our sin.
But that’s the good news of the Gospel.
Galatians 4:4–5 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
Christ was born under the Law to fulfill the Law on our behalf.
He lived a perfect and sinless life. He obeyed every jot and tittle.
The Law was a Covenant of Works.
Do this and live.
And Christ kept that Covenant of Works in our place to give us a Covenant of Grace.
And Christ didn’t just keep the Law on our behalf. He suffered the Penalty and curse of the Law on our behalf as well.
Galatians 3:10, 13 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.
That’s that Covenant of Works.
Verse 13...
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.
Why are we saved through faith in Christ?
Because His righteousness is credited to us when we believe.
His active obedience in keeping the Law on our behalf and His passive obedience in suffering the wrath of God our sin deserved so that through faith in Him we are declared righteous in Christ.
Forgiven…Washed…Justified.
Fully righteous before God because we are clothed in the perfect righteousness of Christ.
Because of sin we are all under a curse.
And only when we judge rightly according to the Law do we see that we can do nothing to make ourselves righteous.
And our only hope is the perfect and sinless righteousness of Christ.

Jesus is the Son of God who alone can save us from all our sins.

That only leaves one question.
Point number 3…

III. What Will You Do With Jesus?

We started this sermon off by saying you can’t just say He was a good man.
No one can be a good man and say He is the Son of God and the only way to be saved from our sins.
So that leaves us with only three options. He is either a Liar, Lunatic, or Lord.
He’s not a Liar.
He never sinned.
Even His own enemies could not find one sin in him, and from our passage we even saw that He did not have the characteristics of a liar.
He didn’t seek His own glory or say whatever He needed to say to keep a huge following.
If anything He did the exact opposite.
He’s not a Lunatic.
Lunatics aren’t generally seen as some of the best most eloquent teachers in the World.
Nor do people tend to follow crazy.
That leaves only one option: He is Lord.
He is the Son of God and the Savior of the world who takes away all our sins.
The only question is will you believe?
In the rest of the passage, we see different possible responses to Jesus.

Ignore

Some people ignore Him and look for ways to justify their unbelief.
Verse 25...
John 7:25–31 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.
These people basically just ignore Jesus.
They try to get out of dealing with Him or believing in Him by looking for some theological loophole, one that isn’t even good because the Bible is clear that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem which Jesus certainly was.
So basically they have the wrong facts about the Bible and they have the wrong facts about Jesus because they just assume He from Nazareth.
That basically, just like what happens today people will look for any excuse, even ones rooted in ignorance to avoid coming to Christ.
And what’s interesting is Jesus doesn’t even correct them.
He just gets to the heart of the matter.
So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.
He hammers again, I’m the Son of God.
And when He says He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. I know him for I come from him and he sent me...
What He’s saying is I’m the only way to the Father.
I’m the only way to know and worship God.
I’m the only way to have all your sins forgiven.
So you get one part of the crowd that ignores Him.
That ignores everything they heard and just tries to go on with their life.
Don’t ignore Christ today.

Rejection

Other’s outright reject Him.
Verse 30...
So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
This would be like the staunch atheist who doesn’t just ignore Christ…they absolutely hate Him.
They blaspheme Him and war against Him.
In pride they refuse to submit to Christ.

Saving Faith

And then the third option: Saving faith.
Verse 31.
Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?
This is the true and right response to Jesus Christ.
Like we looked at earlier.
Every other response is just another way of trying to keep ahold of our sin.
Of having our sin and not letting it go.
Judging rightly sees our sin for what it is.
Dust and ashes.
Broken vessels that hold no water when Christ gives us the waters of eternal life.
Saving faith looks like putting all of your hope, all of your life, all of your trust in Jesus.
It looks like loving Christ with all of your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and living all of your life for Him.
And it all starts with a simple prayer, God be merciful to me a sinner.
Lord I’m under the curse of the Law.
I can’t save myself…My only hope is Christ!
Run to Him. Cast yourself on God’s grace and mercy.
Renounce all your sin and self-righteousness.
Come to Christ and pray Will you save me? I believe that you died in my place for my sins. Will you forgive me and make me clean?
And do you know what Christ says?
All who come to me I will never cast out (John 6:37).
And Whoever comes to me shall never hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst (John 6:35).

Jesus is the Son of God who alone saves us from all our sins.

Let’s Pray
