Zacchaeus name is derived from the Hebrew word (zakkay), meaning “pure” or “innocent. The scriptures states he was short in stature.
He was a high revenue official.
He was the chief tax collector and was wealthy. As a tax collector in the Roman Empire, he had to collect a certain amount for the maintenance of the state. However, they were also permitted to collect more and then keep the proceeds. Tax collectors were hated for their tendency to abuse their power for their own gain. Zacchaeus was unethical and frequently cheated people for a living. He was not liked and was isolated from the community. He was rich but was lonely.
This may have caused him to be lonely and isolated because people did not like tax collectors. He was shun from society and did not have friends. He have been lonely.
3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. 4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
Zacchaeus may of heard of Jesus passing through Jericho and was curious about what he looked like. He may of heard of how Jesus performed miracles of healing the sick.
Zacchaeus did not allow his size and the crowd to deter him from seeing Jesus. Zacchaeus was determined to see what this Jesus look like. Zacchaeus like was about to be changed radically just by being curious.
Zacchaeus was willing to take a risk by making a fool of himself by climbing the sycomore tree to see Jesus.
Zacchaeus became curious about the crowd. He wanted to see who this Jesus was. He just wanted to get a glimpse of the Savior but he was to short to see him.
We see effectual calling at work.
Jesus came to save all does not matter what walk of life a person is in if they are rich or poor.
