Introduction

The fall of all man kind would have a lasting effect on the world even after Adam and Eve were passed on. Satan got Eve to do exactly what he wanted her to by placing a seed of doubt in her mind. This seed caused eve to doubt the goodness of God.
We are still feeling and seeing the effect sin has on a society today. We can’t walk down the street, turn on the tv or even get on the computer without seeing the effect sin has on the world.
Sin is a wicked thing and in Genesis 4-5 we will see the effect of sin up close in the first family.

The first family vs 1-7

In Genesis 1 God tells Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply
Genesis 1:28“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”
Even with the curse of sin they were still commanded to be fruitful and multiply to fill the earth.
Here we see that Adam and Eve were continuing life outside of the garden, as they were kicked out and kept out by a cherubim because of sin. vs. 1
The first born son: Cain vs. 1
Cain means acquisition expressing Eve’s thankfulness that the Lord was keeping her promise to her and her faith that her son would grow to manhood.
Eve was thankful that the Lord had blessed her with a son
Eve might’ve believed that Cain was the promise that God had made of a Deliverer
The second born son: Abel vs. 2a
Abel means Vapor or vanity
By the time Abel was born Eve was fully aware of the effect of God’s curse on the creation which was made subject to vanity
Romans 8:20 “For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,”
The occupation of the son’s vs. 2b
Cain was a tiller of the ground
Cain would be the one to provide fruits and vegetables for the family, a necessity for survival.
Abel was a keeper of the sheep
Abel would be the one to provide the materials for clothing and the sacrifice after the pattern God set up for his parents.
Both of these jibs would be crucial for surviving the earth and continue to fill the earth.
The required sacrifice
The process of time - a reference to the seventh day which God had set aside as a day of rest
Genesis 2:3 “And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”
Fellowship with God would require a worshipper to approach God with an offering that would make them suitable for his presence
Gods example Gen. 3:21
Genesis 3:21 “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.”
God shed the blood of an innocent animal to provide a covering for Adam and Eve showing them what would be required as a sacrifice suitable to God.
Cains offering vs. 3
Cains offering were the fruit of the ground that he had planted and harvested.
While there is a time for us to bring the firstfruits to God this wasn’t the time
Abels offering vs. 4
Abel brought the firstling of his flock
Numbers 18:17 “But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savour unto the Lord.”
Abel brought the fat thereof as well
Leviticus 3:16 “And the priest shall burn them upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire for a sweet savour: all the fat is the Lord’s.”
The Bible says the Lord had respect (showed goodwill or favor) toward Abel and his offering
Hebrews 11:4 “By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.”
Lord did not show good will or favor toward Cains offering.
Cain became very angry towards God
one commentary said this “Cain’s anger reflects pride in his own works which, because of that very fact, God regarded as evil
1 John 3:12 “Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.”
The Lord questions cain vs. 6-7
Why are you wroth? vs. 6
Why are you angry Cain?
God’s question reminded Cain the he knew the type of sacrifice required and had no reason to be surprised that God would not accept another.
It would be like trying to pay for something at the store with monopoly money and then getting mad that they didn’t accept it.
If you made the right sacrifice wouldn’t it be accepted? vs. 7
God asks him a simple question.
If you won’t make the right sacrifice then sin will lie at the door
If Cain didn’t repent he would become so committed to rebellion that sin would rule him unless he made sin his obedient servant.
If we don’t make sin our obedient servant we will become it’s obedient servant. this is exactly what Satan wants for us. He want’s us to be a servant of sin because it keeps us from serving the Lord.

The Family fight and Cains punishment vs. 8-16

Abel was right with God and no doubt tried to get Cain to repent.
This only angered Cain more.
As they are out in the field Cain rises up against Abel and kills him
1 John 3:12–15 “Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.”
God has some more questions for Cain vs. 9
Where is Abel your brother?
Notice Cain lies to God and tells him I know not
And then Cain challenges God and asks him if he is his brothers keeper.
Notice that Eve questioned the goodness of God with the serpent, and now Cain rejected the goodness of God
God gave Cain a chance to make the appropriate sacrifice and he chose to murder his brother therefore rejecting the goodness of God
God asks Cain what he had done
Abels blood cried out from the ground where it was spilled
Cains punishment vs. 11-12
Cursed from the earth
Henry Morris said this “The earth had been cursed because of Adams sin; now the earth itself had been defiled by Cain’s sin. God’s curse was on the earth; Cain’s curse was from the earth.
When he tries to till the ground, it will no longer yield fruit for him
He went from the green thumb of the family to a brown thumb.
His pride in the fruits he had been able to grow from the cursed earth had been the reason for his sin, but now he wouldn’t be able to till the ground even for his own food.
You will be a fugitive and a vagabond
Fugitive - wanderer
Vagabond - unsettled, no permanent home
Cain’s response vs.13-14
He said his punishment is greater than he could bare.
He was worried that everyone who saw him would want to kill him
Since cain couldn’t produce his own food from others, but people would naturally tend to fear him, avoid him, and some would even try to kill him for what he had done.
God’s grace shown toward Cain
If anyone slayed Cain the lord would avenge them seven fold
God was going to protect cain even though he had sinned against him
God marked Cain whether it was a physical mark or a miraculous display of some sort, it was widely known for many generations and did keep those who were inclined to kill Cain to not do it.
Cain’s response to Gods grace vs. 15
He went out of the presence of the Lord
Reminder God never leaves us, but we leave him like cain did here.
Satan thought he had won, he has destroyed Cain’s testimony and caused him to leave the presence of the Lord, and he had caused Cain to slay Abel.

Conclusion

The fall of all mankind in Adam caused the curse of sin to come to God’s perfect earth and to mar its perfection.
We see the curse continue in pride and anger towards someone who was trying to live Godly.
While mankind fell through Adam, mankind can be saved through Christ.
What a miracle!
