Intro: When I look at what is going on in the world an important question that all of us must ask is, in what or whom do I trust?

The Rage We Feel v. 1
Questions we are all asking:
Who is really in charge?
Why aren't things getting better?
Why is there so much anger in the world?
Answer:
Hard-hearts Ephesians 4:18 “having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;”
Blind 2 Corinthians 4:4 “whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.”
Unpleasing Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
Spiritually Dead Ephesians 2:1 “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,”
Hopeless Ephesians 2:12 “that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.”
The Stand We Take v. 2
World Leadership
Kings of the earth
Rulers
Taking a stand and make a plan against:
The Lord - Yahweh
His Anointed - Jesus Christ
The Deception We Embrace v. 3
This deception answers the questions we are asking:
Why is there so much anger in the world?
Why is there such a strong stand being taken against the Lord?
The Lie: Freedom can be found outside of Christ.
The Truth: We were not created or designed to operate autonomously.
Illustration:
Is a fish more free when it has been set free from the bounds of the lake?
Is a train more free when it derailed from the track?
Is a tree more free when it has been uprooted?
Was the prodigal son more free when he left home?
It is the same lie that the serpent told in the garden.
God is holding you back
God’s plan is too restrictive
The Reality We Must Face v. 4-9

The Sovereignty of God v. 4-6
God scoffs at the scoffers v. 4 a
“He who sits in the heavens shall laugh...”
God is laughing at their ridiculous attempts at rebellion.
God expresses His wrath v. 4a, 5
“The Lord shall hold them in derision...”
“He shall speak to them in His wrath...”
“And distress them in His displeasure...”
This is the reality for those who rage against the Lord, who set themselves against His anointed.
The judgment of God is an arm of His sovereignty.
God installs His King v. 6
The final expression of God’s sovereignty we see here is God installing His King on the holy hill of Zion.
This didn’t occur through popular vote or an electoral college.
Yahweh didn’t call and ask your opinion.
The Authority of the Son v. 7-8
In v. 7 the speaker changes from the Lord to the Anointed
“This is what the Lord has said to and about Me”
The Anointed is:
The Son of God v. 7
Heir of the Nations v. 8
The Judgment of the World v. 9
God in His sovereignty has given the authority of judgment to His Son.
When Jesus judges the world it will be:
Broken with a rod of Iron
Broken as a potters vessel
Summery
The person who will judge the world and the person who died to save it are one and the same.
He is the either the judge of our sin or the source of our salvation. Either way at the end of the day Jesus is unavoidable.

“Be instructed you judges”
Warning
Submit to correction
Biblical change always begins with an admission of need
That change is a shift from serving self to serving God
With fear
Reverential awe
The Fear We Enjoy v. 11b
A startling mixture of emotions that is the appropriate response to serving the anointed King of the universe
To the world the Christian life is a paradox
The Homage We Offer v. 12
Kiss the Son
A signet ring
The feet of of the one who has conquered you
His anger and wrath
When we respond with arrogance rather than submission
The result: perish
The blessing of submission
Who? - those who put their trust in Him, those who submit to Him
Why? - because they trusted and submitted to Christ
