Extra announcement for why the route was revised is because I sold my jeep so there is not an adequate vehicle to pull of out all the vehicles from the mud.
Potential of the older youth
The youth are the key to change the world. Especially Jesus believed so as he could be considered the first New Testament youth pastor.
Mark Zukerberg was 19 when he created facebook
Steve Jobs was 21 when he started apple
Spurgeon was 18 wen he became pastor.
Lebron James was 18 when he signed with Nike for an $87 Million contract
The only disciple over the age of 20 was Peter
Matthew 17:24–27 (KJV 1900)
24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
The world children here is different than the verse bro Eric referenced (paidion) meaning a child long whether boy or girl.
The word children in this verse is (uihos) meaning son or kinship, he was referencing the disciples.
One of the most notable young people we find in all of scripture is Joseph.
2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
1 And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.
46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.
Joseph was 17 when he was sold into slavery.
No older than 18 when he was placed into the house of Potipher. And he was there for 11 years. In prison for 2 years and was 30 years old when he was promoted by Pharoah.
We can say all the negative we want to about how Jacob treated his children, but one thing that cannot be denied is the fact that Joseph was raised right.
Joseph’s obedience
Joseph was tasked to go to Shechem to check on his brothers. Bible scholars believe this is a distance of 50 miles.
When he got to Schechem his brothers weren’t there.
At this point what would you assume most 17 years olds would do?
Joseph went the extra mile and traveled an additional 13 miles to Dothan.
Joseph’s purity
Joseph was sold into slavery at the age of 17 and spent the better part of his late 20’s in Potiphar’s house. Historians say during this time promiscuity even with married people was a common thing. Potiphar being a high ranking official, would cause his wife to pretty much get what ever she asked for. When she propositioned Joseph, consider his circumstances.
He was in his 20’s. No parents. No childhood mentors. No church. No missionaries. If a 17 year old is snatched out of our church, and taken to a distant land for over a decade, what are the chances that they make the right decision.
Joseph’s wisdom
Now a 30 year old. Who has had one of the worst decades anybody could ever have is found showing an extraordinary amount of wisdom. Not to mention not holding grudges over his bum brothers.
Making a full circle. What is the full potential of our youth? The youth can change the world. And they have in recent years. But we must train them, and trust them.
Illustration of 4th grade mom telling me she wasn’t helping me anymore. She said her job as a parent was to raise me in a way that if she wasn’t there I could live life without her.
Conclusion.
To the youth. Grab a hold of God’s will for your life. Get a firm foundation on which you can stand on for the days to come
To the adults wether parents of others involved in the life. Train and trust the youth in our church. Are they awkward…yep. Have some not discovered deodorant yet…yep. Are they able to accomplish Gods will and be obedient to his command…yep.
