John 1
John 1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
This opening line to the book of John is one that carries a lot of theological significance as well as giving us much reason to worship. Opening with a reflection of the book of Genesis we see Jesus referred to as the Word. Jesus was with God and he himself is God. Jesus was present at the beginning and all things were made through him. Jesus is life and Jesus is light in the darkness. The darkness will never be able to overcome the light.
What a beautiful passage! Though it is one that you have to read a few times to truly grasp we see that it is filled with so much about who Jesus is. These things that it describes Jesus as become themes through the book of John. As we read them here we can note them as we go through the book as themes that should stand out.
We need to remember that Jesus is eternal and is himself God. We need to remember that all things were created through him, and as it says in Colossians all things were made by him and for him as well. We need to remember that Jesus is life and this life is the light in the darkness. We also need to always remember that the darkness will never overcome the light.
Remember these things. Remember the power of our Lord and Savior. No matter how much darkness comes it will never overcome our master because of who he is. Remember these truths.
