Luke 15:11–19 (NKJV)

Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’

1. how the sinner treats God -

So he divided to them his livelihood. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.

Luke 15:20–24 (NKJV)

“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.

God is eager that they would repent and find mercy.

Q. Why was He jealous.

He thought he was more worthy

A. You cant earn Gods love -----by faith alone

He did not understand the gospel.

Older son thought He was better because of his outward obedience

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.

you can look clean on the outside and be far from God on the inside.

warn you kids who grow up in the church

dont be decieved into thinking your right with God because you look good on the outside.

but you judge every person you see.

B. Jesus focus is the older son.

we are the older son.

Q.What is your reaction to Gods grace towards sinners?

desire for repentance / desire for their destruction

does your heart break for sinners?

is it worth it if they think your uncool?

How does this look like in our lives?

We are good people....We follow the rules

DO THE RAY COMFORT------who thinks they are a good person?

But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.

you cant earn anything with God..

Everything good from him is pure grace.

James 1:17 NKJV

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

perfect gift---------not earned

Yet we live as if we have to earn Gods love.

and the pressure mounts up because your flesh is weak.

Q. Who feels like they have pressure on them to be a good christian?

if you live up to that standard--- your good.

when you fail--- your bad.

This is result based christianity

Moral thereputic deism ----- good and moral = righteousness and heaven

Q. Do you know why God loves you?

Because your his son and daughter by faith in Jesus.

nothing else!!!!

see the older brother had good morals on the outside

inside he was just as bad a sinner.

Illistrate---

babysit your siblings but your heart is frustrated.

go to work but your heart is complaining the whole time

dont listen to bad music but your heart condemns the people who do.

Then you think because you babysit, go to work, and dont listen to bad music that God loves you

and the kid who is not a moralistic christian, they are shunned by God.

What the older brother is saying is that I am a good son and I deserve your grace and my sinful brother does not.

He dosent realize that even as a morally better person,

He is further from God then his brother.

“And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ”

B. Right response to a sinner who repents

Here we see a rebuke to the self righteous.

Dont be like the older brother.

repent from wrongly judging others

and start praying for the ungodly and unbelieving to repent.

please extend more grace to others because God has extended more grace to you.
